Stayed about 3 hours in this interesting museum - good for all ages - a lot of focus on dinosaurs in Northwest China - unfortunately Audio Guide only available in China which is a little bit disappointing for Foreign guests although there are quite some written comprehensive explanations on the three floors …

When we arrived at about 1pm we were told to come back at 4:30 and to register via the QR code, which is displayed near the road. Registration is in Chinese. Staff provided no alternative. When we came back and were unable to navigate the registration, which only opened at 4:30, someone wrote my details down on a piece of paper and let me and my wife in.
Exhibitions were poor. Wouldn’t bother.

first of all, this is a wrong month to visit. it is school holiday and it is flooded with people, the kind of people who goes there just because their tour group arranged it for them, and just because it is free. just the wrong crowd. the museum staff doesn't do anything to maintain order. appointment via WeChat is required prior to the visit (how would I know?). Museum staff is rather rude, probably because of overcrowding. The collection is interesting, plenty of English signage (audio guide still recommended).

This museum has an interesting collection of Gansa province artifacts. Especially the section on 5000 years old pries is world class. Unfortunately, the pieces are not very well presented and hardly any descriptions in English. The tacky plastic flowers everywhere and the big groups of bored local kids don’t help either. Entrance is free

Admission is free, but reservations are required. You can't go to the registration page from the official website with a passport. You need some other app.
Also, during the summer vacation period, there are a lot of families and children, so it's quite difficult for tourists to make reservations, so I asked for a private tour. There was a long line of people waiting to enter in the morning too.
The guide was excellent, and we were able to enter quickly.
Many of the exhibits are national treasures, and are well worth seeing. However, it's definitely better to have a detailed explanation from the guide. As time goes by, it gets really crowded and it seems that you can't get close to the famous exhibits. It's important to understand the highlights well and tour efficiently in a short amount of time!

Great collection of fossils and some lovely bronze age horses! There is an entire room dedicated to just pottery from pre-bronze age which was a bit repetitive for me but to each their own! The fossil/dinosaur rooms were great with good mix of English signs. There are entire rooms made up to look like some of the great sights of the silk roads which was different! But fun.
Entrance was tricky as the tickets are only available through their Chinese only app and they were quite rude about allowing me entrance dispute my various green codes and recent NAT negative result so be warned!

From Lanzhou? Very far. On a sleeper train it takes 15 hours. If you take the fastest option of train, it could take 9-10 hours.
