Nur wenig Ausstellungsstücke, zudem sehr dunkel. Es gibt auch kaum Beschreibungen zu den Exponaten. Die zeit kann man sich sparen.

We came late in the day but if you're interested in details of the wall, this is the place. Well laid out and lots of info.

The museum has many interesting insights to a soldier's life during ancient times. The layout of the structures, the function of the areas, the barracks all in their original locations and much of the feel of the place intact. The restoration and preservation is well done and I found plenty of information in english so I was able pique my interest.

Well, if you are in already in the walled city area, it is near the "1st Pass Under Heaven" gate. It's free, so why not stop in. To get a ticket, just show your passport and head on in. It is well laid out, with plenty of English descriptions. It tells the story of how there have been many great walls over time, with pictures showing how the look today (many not good!). Artifacts from the wall can also be found here, along with construction techniques and the historical significance of the wall to China's culture.
Even if you aren't a huge museum person, or that interested in the wall, it's free and can be a quick 10 minute walk through or 1 hour in depth study.

Don´t miss this museum. It is very interesting if u r interested in history of The Great Wall. And it is free, what is not usual in China :)

I have visited several sections of the Great Wall and I have to say that this museum gave me the best explanation of the Great Wall construction, locations, and history. It is a small museum, but well-organized and maintained. If you are already in the area, it is a good stop for an hour or so

My son and I visited this museum, but had a bit of difficulty finding it. The directions from the railway station are as follows:
(1) walk straight from the railway to the shanhaiguan fortress gate
(2) do not enter the fort, as the museum is outside the walls. Turn right and walk for about 10 minutes until another large entrance gate is reached.
(3) turn left through the gate and walk for 5 minutes. The great wall museum is on the left.
We had heard that this museum was the most comprehensive on the great wall, and we were not disappointed. We did not pay an entrance fee, but there seemed to have been an unmanned ticket office. The exhibits included the great walls constructed in China, and the approximate dates of construction. Other interesting exhibits included weapons that were used to defend the wall (including stone mines), definitions of architectural designs on the walls, compounds that were used to keep the bricks together and daily life on the wall..
Allow at least one hour to see all exhibits. This museum was a part of other tours so could be packed with visitors when a tour bus arrives. If visiting on your own, my advice would be to try to get in between the tour visits to enjoy all exhibits. This museum would be more meaningful if you had already hiked the great wall.

This is a great treat, a free and marvellously well presented set of artefacts and images following the timeline of the wall and indeed its geographic history.
The displays are well done and most have English translation with them, the construction details, development of weapons, the battles and conflicts through the ages give you an idea how it helped to shape the numerous States that eventually made up China.
It has seen some history this place and you feel how it fits the landscape, the people who built must have been rather tenacious and well led. The translations give you some sense of the naivety of its recording with tales of Japanese invasions allied to their puppet allies. The numerous references to Chinese victories over the aggressors and their "puppets" being anihalated does raise a smile - sorry.
Well worth the visit and please look out in the cabinet for a long pole with a spear on the end withe English caption "big pointy stick" shades of Python, don't miss this place
