If you’re in Datong, you have to go see the caves.
We were dropped off by the gate, walked up, bought tickets, 240RMB for 2 people, and proceeded in. Once you are in a few hundred metres, you can buy a there/return bus ticket for 15RMB. Buy the bus ticket unless you want to bake under the July sun. I would say it’s almost a 1km walk to the caves and then you’d have to walk back.
The caves themselves are very cool, reminded me of the churches carved into the rocks in Cappadocia, Turkey, but these caves have much more detail, some with 1000 small buddhas carved into the rock.
We went on a Tuesday in July, about lunchtime and there was a very large crowd, so expect weekends, and holidays to be insane with people. Try to go through the week, in the off season.

The Yungang Grottoes have a long history and I highly recommend visiting this place during your time at Datong. The Yungang Grottoes are a 20 minute drive from the old city.

Breathtaking site and grottos, though it is recommended to read up on the history and grottos / watch documentaries before going to grasp the uniqueness and depth of the site. Signage boards only provide limited information and the Museum is currently closed due to Covid. If you speak Mandarin, you could also respectfully ask the friendly security staff in the grottos for explanations. They are very knowledgeable and deserve credit for their willingness to share.

be careful on the long waiting queue early in the morning to go in... lot of tours. better to exit by the same way than coming instead of waiting cars back to the exit

We travelled to Datong on the 8:40am fast train from Beijing North and organised for the taxi driver we got at the new Datong South station to take us to the caves and then bring us back to the station after a few hours at the caves (we have some basic Chinese language skills) It was certainly very cold but the caves are so amazing that we didn’t even think about how cold we were. The whole place is very well done and seeing the caves is very easy - being so cold (-4 on the day we visited) we did pay the 15Y for the electric bus around the site. We highly recommend the Yungang Grottoes if you have time.

How do these grottoes compare to Longmen grottoes east of Xi'an? Bigger/smaller? More colorful? Need more time to visit or less?

You do not have to rent a car or take a tour. We took bus 17 from our guesthouse to the end (bus station) and then transferred to bus 3 which dropped us off at the entrance to the park. Paid 1RMB per person for each bus. Ask your hotel/guest house which bus will take you to the bus station and then take bus 3. To return, bus 3 picks you up at the same spot that you were dropped off at. Very good value.

Yes,this is How I did, first the Hanging Temple and then the Grottoes. As a matter of fact they are in oposite directions So you pass Datong again. The Grottoes are a very big site So maybe it is better to get there first. The Hanging Temple is not So dramatic as it looks in pictures and it is quite small.
Hope it was helpful. All the Best and have a nice trip.
By the way How are you traveling to Datong,by train ,bus, flight and where will you go after Datong?Thank you for your answer.Viorica

Can somebody please recomend a driver to go to the grottoes and also to drive us to Pingyao?

Hey Susy,
Datong is definitely a good place to visit. You have Yungang Grottoes that are accessible by public bus so no need to spend money on a driver (they try to rip off foreigners as much as they can).
Not far from Datong I would also recommend a day-trip to visit the Hanging Monastery. It is mind-blowing and almost literally breathtaking. If you like hiking, close to the Monastery you will find Hengshan (one of The Five Sacred Mountains of China). For this day-trip a driver is a must as accessibility to these places is limited.
Heading to Pingyao from Datong, a driver will cost you your eyes, liver and kidneys. I would recommend taking the night train. You can get a soft bed for 178 RMB/person. Train leaves Datong at 10:26pm and arrives Pingyao around 6am. I suggest to buy tickets in advance.
If you have more days and like mountains and nature, between Datong and Pingyao there is Wutaishan (1 of the Four Great Mountains of Buddhism) which will give you a peace of mind, relax and enjoy pure air in a mountain landscape.
Hope above is helpful. Let me know if you need further help.

Hi I am to decide if the trip to Datong is a do not miss stop. I really want to see the grottoes and hanging monastery but the travel from Beijing and then moving along to Pingyao seems very complicated. Can anyone speak about this. Beijing - Datong - Pingyao - Xian - Shanghai.
I have to figure out how best to travel from Beijing to Datong and then onto Pingyao. Can I really do the grottoes and monastery in a day if I book a guide and car? and then spend the night in Datong?
Please share with your thoughts on these two sights being do not miss sights. Thank you for your time.

We went through the CITS office when we to Datong - it was right near the train station.
The guide spoke excellent English but I don't remember what we paid. There were 2 others on the little mini bus with us.
i booked our Datong accommodation online ... the hotel was called the Sunshine Hyatt ... not Hyatt as in the major chain. It was a 2-3 star hotel. It's got a new name now.
the train from Beijing was really easy. We sit up seats .. took about 7 hours. It was very cramped with people standing. Seats were ok though. We upgraded for a few dollars to a sleep on the return because lots of people were smoking in the carriage ... something we're no longer used to.
i hope that's of some help. It's worth the trip. We went to the grottos & the hanging temple

Unfortunately I will have a very tight schedule as I am on business trip. I will visit Datong end of April. How long would it take to visit the site with an English speaking guide. Thank you for your help.

I agree, 3-4 hours is enough, the site is not very big and it's not that far from the city. Have fun!

Is this a do not miss? Our trip is in April 2016, I think by then, there will be a fast train from Beijing to Datong. We were going to go straight from Beijing to Pingyao but since a new train stop is opening, we think this might be a "do not miss" along with the Hanging Monastery. We love ancient, old, history. Please share your thoughts.
Thank you

Not really a "do not miss". The grottoes were damaged throughout the years and refurbished in the 1970s. They do seem less authentic. The Hanging Monastery is a class above the grottoes in many ways. Instead of visiting the grottoes, a good alternative is to visit the Heng Shan (Mountain Heng) which is just a good 5 minutes uphill drive from the Hanging Monastery.
Hope you find this hopeful. =)
