This is a colorful, artistic neighborhood that has evolved into a tourist site. I was safe here as I roamed the streets solo.
Do not pay for an organized tour unless you are interested in a guided explanation of the history of the community. I took an Uber to the entrance at the bottom of the hill and then walked the entire path up and around the ridge.
Visitors short on time can see it in under an hour using the escalators. Others could spend half a day here if they chose to shop for art or souvenirs, or eat at one of the stands at the top.
I enjoyed my visit here though other tourists I met were unimpressed. I think the enjoyment of this place depends on several factors, the primary one being an understanding and appreciation of what this community accomplished - against all odds.
This friendly, lively, and colorful area was once known as the murder capital of the world. Comuna 13's evolution was not brought about by gentrification, but by the efforts and hard work of the community.
This remote area was first settled by people fleeing zones of conflict during the political unrest of the 1950's. The comuna was neither planned nor recognized by the government, and the isolation of the unprotected impoverished area attracted drug cartels, traffickers, criminals, and militant rebels. By the time Pablo Escobar established his cocaine empire, the homicide rate was estimated to be 20 murders a day.
In 2002, newly elected President Uribe launched several military strikes against cartels and guerilla factions; the most aggressive of these targeted Comuna 13. Tanks and blackhawk choppers opened fire on the entire area, killing innocents and injuring hundreds.
The violence and struggle for control continued for 9 more years. Residents could not walk the streets without fear of being caught in the crossfire. Trapped in a warzone of threats from all sides without access to medical attention, jobs, or resources, residents began to speak out. Graffiti artists and rappers told the story of the fight for survival and the need for change. Community members and gangs began to unite in a movement for change and the peaceful end to the violence and conflicts.
The area's escaleras (escalators) were installed as part of a government focus on improving infrastructure and access to resources outside the grip of the cartels.
The escalators also provided an opportunity to attract tourism. Residents worked to create the community you see today. The path around the ridge is lined on one side with a continuous row of colorful vendor stalls, art stands, souvenir shops, bars, restaurants, and stunningly beautiful murals and graffiti art . On the opposite side, over the waist-high concrete wall, are the sweeping views of the hillside blanketed with tiny, tightly-packed colorful houses.
Though gangs and poverty are still prevalent throughout the comuna, the violence is now an echo of the past. The designated tourist area is safe. Children laugh and play, teens rap and dance, and adults smile and wave. That said, the beauty of this comuna is not a rebirth of trendy, modern buildings sprung from the ashes of the previous ones. The structures are still very crude and rustic. Vendors and motorcycles buzz up and down the narrow paths, reminding visitors that this is an area striving to sustain itself.
The real beauty here is the power of a community's resilience, courage, and determination. Thousands of people visit Comuna 13 every day to witness the transformation of a community where no one would dare to visit a decade ago.

Many of the shops and food vendors were blasting their music at high volume levels. It spoiled the atmosphere, so I left sooner than I otherwise would have.
Also, the vendors should show their prices. I don't want to bargain with a vendor in a language I don't speak or understand.

It is a place with too many crowds of people, motorcycles ride over pedestrians as if they were the kings of the road, very disorganized

An unforgettable experience. The colorful escalators are a symbol of change, replacing old steep alleys with more comfortable access. Walking through its streets, you can feel a good atmosphere, vibrant murals and artistic expressions adorn the walls, telling stories of resilience and unity.

Excellent experience but only because we had a guided tour by a local expert. To go alone you would miss a lot of the history and significance. Some of the kiosks/stalls are expensive! They are catering for gringo tourists.

You cannot come to Medellin and not go to Comuna 13. The vibe, energy and views. This is history and the people are proud of this. Take the escalators to the top, stop along the way and browse the shops, get a bite to eat and enjoy it. Safe but avoid going in the evening and stick to the main tourist path.

Yes,I believe they are open every day. The escaleras are used by the residents to access their homes located in a hilly area. During my visit some sections were closed for repairs so I used the steps, not the escalator.
