Saint Paul Cathedral is located in the Plateau district, on a hill overlooking the Cocody lagoon, which gives it a particular charm. However, the work of the Italian architect Aldo Spirito (1929-1987), built between 1983 and 1985, it has an unusual shape, with its bell tower in three parts and in the shape of a concrete bridgehead!!
It was built at a time when architects were working to “innovate” structures and forms. In fact, it has an unstructured appearance between the large inclined mast in the shape of a cross 70 m high, supported by a large concrete foot and the rest of the building. This one is separated from the bell tower and resembles the widened bow of a ship, with a flat and sloping roof, in the shape of a sail.
In fact, it seems that the shape of this cathedral resembles a seated elephant, whose trunk, which would be the bell tower, rises towards the sky.
One of the originalities of this cathedral is that it is imbued with many religious symbols, such as its triangular shape, which represents the Holy Trinity. Likewise, the walls of the facade, which seem to sink into the earth, represent the tusks of the elephant!! Note that the elephant is one of the symbols of Ivory Coast, phew, so I understood everything!! And again, the Ivorians, who love superlatives, claim that the main bell tower, facing the coast, seems to draw the silhouette of a giant 70 m high which, like an allegory of the African man, seems capable of towing a mountain !!!
The bundles of 7 cables, which connect the roof of the nave to the top of the cross bell tower, represent the 7 sacraments and the 7 virtues. The exterior walls of the nave are open with stained glass windows, oval in shape, to let in light.

The side entrance, which gives access to the choir, has a portal, flat with soft and round shapes, in the shape of a bell, which is accessed after having climbed a succession of steps, with a gentle slope, which allows it to last pleasure !
Likewise, the large stained glass window, with curved lines, which is located on the side wall of the nave, is accessible by a large staircase, with a large basin on the terrace, which is thus formed. It serves as a side entrance and the stained glass window represents the arrival of the first missionaries in Grand Bassam in 1895.
When you enter inside, you are surprised by the size of the nave, which does not have a central pillar, leaving a clear view of the altar, from whatever location. The walls are open with superb polychrome stained glass windows, in the naive style, as well as cross-shaped openings, which diffuse colored light with the most beautiful effect. Taking the path towards the lagoon, you can admire the new cable-stayed bridge, called "Alassane Ouattara, name of the new President.

After opening the door to the cathedral, I fully appreciated the size and beauty of the building. Long wooden benches descend in a V shape, narrowing as they approach the altar. The historic stained glass windows on each side of the seats allow soft light to filter inside.
The nave has a capacity of 4,500 seated places and 1,500 standing places. The Pope, John Paul II, consecrated this cathedral on August 10, 1985.
In addition to visiting the cathedral, you can access the main bell tower by an elevator, which gives a panoramic view of Abidjan. From this space, which rises to seventy meters in height, we can take pictures of Abidjan. Unfortunately, it was closed during our visit. Outside, on the walls of the large staircase which descends towards the lagoon, you can admire the Stations of the Cross, made with panels covered with very good quality mosaics.
There is also the St Paul Cultural Center on site, with a three-level building, which houses a library with more than six thousand books, as well as a conference room with 110 seats. On the second level, there is the Communications Office of the Archdiocese of Abidjan and the third level, which houses a Radio Espoir studio.
Finally, right next door, we can see the performance hall, with a 395-seat auditorium, where artists perform.

Very hot but they had rotating fans in the aisles to keep everyone cool during prayer. The stained glass windows were worth seeing.

Located near the Abidjan city center is the newly constructed Catholic Cathedral. The inside of the church is large with seating arranged in a 180 degree configuration that is tiered so all attendees have an unobstructed view of the alter area. The massive stained glass windows are beautiful. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the city center area.

The outside is impressive architecture. It is a must to go inside and see the stained glass depicting Africa animals and cultural correct skin tones of religious persons. The inside is cool and well worth the effort. Free to enter.
