We called ahead and the manager agreed to open the gate for us to take a tour. He was very friendly and gave us a detailed guide to walk through it at our own pace. It was extremely hot and humid the day we were there so we went through it fairly quickly, but it had dozens of beautiful trees and flowers as well as a lovely view of the bay at one point. The only issues we had is that it is a bit pricey ($25 FJD per person) for how big it was, the route was a bit confusing to follow, and there were places where the wooden walk way was in disrepair.

As I came from a tropical country, most of the landscape and plants are available and common in my country, thus the visit to Flora Tropica Garden has no WOW factor, the area is rather small as compare to some commercial nurseries back home but they do have a wide variety of palms and the walk inside the garden can be done within 20 - 30 minutes and I would say good for school going children to pick up some species, name and look around. They do have an entry fee.

The flora tropica gardens are home to an amazing collection of over 300 palm species from all over the world, in an amazingly beautiful setting. The density and diversity of palms is mindboggling. You receive an informative leaflet and follow a walkway through a lush jungle and can even get close to some of the palms canopies. Ideal for a leisurely and easy walk, taking pictures, being amazed by all shapes and forms of palms and if you come early or late enough, enjoy the many birds. The gardens are well maintained. Best to call up front and plan it during weekdays as they need to open the gate. It is a very short drive from Savusavu and most taxis know it. This is a conservation ex-situ initiative worth supporting, that should get more attention than it currently receives!

Outstanding gardens-just about died climbing up -but I don't cope with the heat that well ! Loved it regardless. What a beautiful garden. Lots of history and info given to us by the Caretaker/Gardener. A must see for garden lovers like me :)

The person who set up this garden should receive an award. This is a must visit place for nature lovers. It’s not just palm trees but the tranquility, unspoiled nature and solitude. When you reach the top of the hill there are benches for being by yourself and admiring peacefulness. We are truly grateful. Some practical information - the garden needs at least two hours and closes at 5 pm. You need to call Enock who is the guardian and he will let you in. His number is on the gate. Entry fee is FJD 20.

We were taken on a tour of the gardens by the owner whose vast knowledge of the palms in particular made this an interesting trip. Needs a reasonable level of fitness as the terrain is very steep.

It was a little unclear from the website but you must call ahead to be let into the gardens. Cost to walk through is $20 FJD/ $10 USD a person
When we arrived we received a brief orientation from the caretaker and a 4 page type out guide. There were a lot of different palm trees, I had no idea there were that many
The paper guide was at times very useful and others useless. Not every tree marked was listed and it sometimes went out of order so it was a little confusing. We went on a bit of a “hunt” to find some of the trees and had to give up on a few.. The walkway and stairs were well maintained but the garden in not wheelchair accessible or would I consider it accessible for those with difficulty walking.
It was very warm in the garden. You can catch a few breezes at times but plan to bring water with you as it can also be very stagnant air. It took us about an hour to walk through the garden so plan to bring plenty of water.
We had the entire place to ourselves so it was very peaceful.
Note that the location is not listed on google maps but is easy to find just off of Lesiaceva Point Road with a sign showing where to turn if you’re coming from Savusavu. See photos

Definitely worth a visit if you like flora and fauna. The highlight is that the garden has almost all varieties of palm trees found all over the world.... currently 289 species! Nice labelling and informative pamphlet for the stroll through the garden.

Does the Flora Tropical Gardens open on Sunday's?
We are due to visit Savusavu on the Sun Princess on Sunday 28th June 2015.
If we get a taxi to the Gardens what is the address and how much would it cost approximately.

Yes, they do open on a Sunday. Phone them on +679 834 8314 to arrange a tour for your preferred time as otherwise they are usually at 2pm - but they don't get people every day so I am sure they would appreciate knowing you were coming. Or message them on their website or Facebook page. A taxi is FJ$ 4 to 6 each way. Ask your taxi driver to come back for you in 90 minutes or 2 hours as not many empty taxis pass for flagging down. Make sure you take your camera, as it is a wonderful place
