The Ashurkhana is in Charminar area of Hyderabad. It was built by Mohammed Quili Qutub Shah, (around year 1600AD) the 5th Ruler from Qutub Shahi Dynasty. All Ashukhanas are meant as Shiite mourning prayer halls. This is close to Shadab restaurant famous for Hyderabadi food. The main hall has a decoration with small multi Color tile chips pasted in Hexagonal shape. It was meant to mourn death of Imam Hussain during Mohurrum festival. If you take Telangana Tourism heritage walk , this place is included as break fast point.

The telework takes you to the heart of Iran, the memorabilia and the decoration would tell a lot of the Shiite sect. It is a hidden oasis in the noisy neighbourhood, worth the effort to find it

This is a historical place in Hyderabad. One of the oldest structures in old city. Its maintained by Persian descendants, now in 12th generation.

Visited this place for an event. You can walk in, if you are around Charminar area. Hotel Shadab is next to this.

Do ask the in-charge to tell you about the importance of the structures in this space.

The place was built in the 16th century by Quli Qutub Shah. The walls are decorated with enamel mosaic tiles. Go there to marvel at the work. It is a lesser known place in Charminar that has been recently restored after removing the encroachments within the complex.

Badshahi Ashurkhana is a Shia house of mourning and forms part of the heritage walk around the old city of Hyderabad. It lies in close proximity to major tourist spots such as the Charminar and the Salar Jung Museum, but is somewhat hard to locate among the crowd and mass of buildings at Madina Circle.

By all accounts, this was once a larger complex, but only the main building is still standing. The building is worth a short visit and particularly notable is the excellent tile work along the walls of this structure. This is a quiet place among all the noise around it, though a large congregation of Shias gathers here during Muharram to mourn the killings of the Prophet's relatives.

First of all, let me warn you that the Badshahi Ashurkana is not the easiest place to find!!

If you are already in the Charminar area, you have to retrace your steps towards the Madina building and then take a left turn towards the High Court. Immediately, within a few metres and opposite the Madina building you will see a large green gate. That is the entrance to this monument.

If the gate is not open, just use muscle power to open it and get in. You can also park your car there as there is ample space.

You will be faced with a stell grilled building within a small garden. Dont be disappointed!! You have arrived. Please do enter after removing your shoes.

As a background I will tell you what an ashurkhana is: one of the to major sects of Islam is Shiaism. After the death of the Prophet Muhammad there was a rift amongst followers who wanted Hazrat Ali to be the next Caliph but there was a group who opposed this move and hence a schism and the formation of Shias, followers of Hazrat Ali, son in law of the Prophet.

There were many wars between the sects but the worst was in Karbala when the grandsons of the Prophet, Imam Hussain and his younger brothers were martyred in a fierce battle.

Ashurkhanas, which are Houses of Mourning are meant for Shias to congregate and listen to lectures on the unfortunate events at the time of Muharram (first month of Islamic calendar) when the battle took place.

This ashurkhana is specially called Badshahi (KIngly) as many of the Kings who ruled Hyderabad were inclined towards Shiaism and participated in the ceremonies/lectures here.

When you enter the building you are left astounded by the profusely decorated walls on three sides, which are covered in colored tile work reminiscent of the mosques and other monuments in Central Asia.

This building is the second to be built after the Charminar in 1594 so it is already more than 400 years old but the original tile work looks almost new in contrast to the
newly painted areas upto a height f 5/6 ft. This portion was damaged in the flood of 1908 when the water entered the building and damage the walls. The newer paint was applied just 5/6 years ago and is already peeling off!!!

You can walk all through the building and please do take all the pictures you want. This is the only building of its type in India!!!

If you would like more information about its history you can ask the watchman to call Mr. Abbas or any of his brothers whose family has been looking after this building for 11 generations.
