Chandragiri is now famous for the historical fort, and the Raja Mahal within it. The fort encircles eight ruined temples, Rani Mahal and other ruined structures. Two entrances to the fortified city survive even today. Visitors are not allowed to walk till the fort. Seen from a distance the granite rocky mountain gives appearance of moon, which possibly gave the fort its name: Chandra (moon) Giri (mountain)
The Raja Mahal Palace is an example of architecture of Vijayanagar period. It is a three storeyed structure with a durbar hall in the middle. The crowning towers represents the Hindu architectural elements. The palace was constructed using stone, brick, lime mortar and devoid of timber. The palace bears a striking resemblance to the Lotus Palace in Hampi, and houses a small museum run maintained by ASI. It was in this Durbar hall where the pact of granting lands for Fort St. George to the British was signed by Vijayanagar King Sri Rangaraya. The fort later grew into modern day metropolis of Chennai.
Across the road from the King’s Palace are the exposed foundations of a long gone building that local guides claim was the residence of the legendary Tenali Rama, the humorous poet from Krishna Deva Raya’s court.

It was unfortunate that the day I visited the Palace, it was closed. However, I had free access to the grounds, which are well kept and CLEAN. There were no loiterers there as well which makes one feel safe.
The palace is a good place to do architecture photograph, and this being the 'off day', I had 'clean shots' ie without other tourists jumping in the frame. One of these days, I will be sharing the photos of the outside on this forum
I was impressed by the politeness of the staff at the ticket counter. And the most surprising thing was that they had a credit card machine for electronic payments, which is unheard of in the monuments in North India. Further, there was INR 5 discount (on a INR 25 ticket) when paying by credit card, which is a wonderful attempt by the local government to facilitate electronic money use.

Chandragiri Fort is situated just on the roadside. So there is no problem to access the Fort. Near the entrance, there is a ticket booth for buying tickets to enter. After entering, you come to a beautiful area to walk around. The Palace has been turned into a museum where many artifacts are on display. We did not see much crowd. On the whole, your time will be well spent.

It's amongst the very few heritages where you will find the real architecture of how the kings used to live. Well maintained, quite a lot of things to see inside of the heritage.

The Chandragiri fort and palace at Chandragiri near Tirupati was built in 11th century by Yadavas Naidu kings and later under Vijayanagara empire.
It has a Raja Mahal Palace which is now an archaeological museum and Queen palace and an old temple.
The museum does not have much to see.
Worth a visit for the architecture of the palace.

The place is clean and quiet. Perfect for a small picnic too. But don’t have hopes high about this place. The boundary ends before it starts. Still the road which takes to the fort and the fort is all green. So that way, it’s worth a short detour - only when you have time in hand. If short on time, can leave it.

I have been to Chandragiri fort multiple times, though this review is based on the recent trip. It is one of the earliest places where Sound & Light Show has been introduced. It is worth spending 2 hours here. One could go at around 5 PM and spend some 30 mins before the show starts. The show is really good. Tickets are available at the venue it self. Be there before time on weekends as it gets crowded. Show is available in both Telugu and English
