A museum that's never open
A total lack of information with signage - except the occasional board
A total lack of guide services
Very poor management of the grounds, paths and structures themselves....
This should be the pride of Indian civilization, the mother-land of what we consider where we sprang from - I wept, as I'd done 30 years ago during my first visit, at the ill-treatment this site has suffered, because there are no proud dynasties involved, no religious muths and myths surrounding a temple trust....
Oh, my India, when will you awaken to our real treasures!

The museum is closed for long but they don’t say it on the website. Pl don’t travel the distance hoping for seeing the museum. The excavation can be seen and that is an experience but somehow feels incomplete.

One of the ancient site of Indus valley civilization, had the world's earliest known dock. River is now dried up, and approx 12 kms away from the site.
A must visit place for everyone who has interest in history and enthusiastic to know about our past. Others may get disappointed.
More excavations need to be done. Museum is under renovation and was closed since last two years..
No guide is available there to explain about the site.
Roads are good and its just 85 kms from Ahmedabad, half an hour is enough, entry allowed till 5:30 pm. Closes at 6 pm

Lathal in Gujarat is one of the cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. A historical marvel with planned city structure, granary, public bath, bead factory and dockyard. Archaeological museum near the site was closed. Archeological Society of India could have provided more information on the site near the structures. It was a wonderful site for people interested in history.

When we visited, the museum was closed due to covid restriction.A person standing outside showed us around and explained a little history.Nothing much to see though.I guess the main interesting artifacts are kept in the museum.

"Scenic Beauty is good."
The museum is under construction. No guide, but at the entrance there is a board which very well explains the areas and its location.
You have to do guess work and understand yourself.
I enjoyed the scenic beauty and the calmness.

Ruins excavated originating to the Harappan ?/ Mohenjodaro era. The excavated site just about being maintained without any infrastructural or tourism supportive facilities. The museum too has closed down due to the dilapidated condition of the building. All in all a visit lasting not more than 30 - 45 minutes is more than enough for history buffs. carry your own food/snacks and even drinking water as none of it is available there.

In what duration can one complete the lothal tour ?

Hi Shridevi, Lothal site has two parts: the excavated relics and the museum. Spend about an hour at the museum, and an hour outside. Velavadar Wet and dry sactuary is not very far. I suggest you stay there the night earlier. In the evening visit the dry-land sanctuary of blackbucks. Early morning, take a guided tour to the wetland part of the sanctuary, you may find some birds. Then head to Lothal. Alternatively, if you are coming onward from some place, visit Lothal first, then head to Velavadar.
On my visits, I have driven past Valbhipur as well, but have not stopped to visit: they say it is interesting, too.
I hope it helps.

Hi,
I'm planning to visit Gujarat sometime in January. I would like to know that from archaeology standpoint, which one is better - Dholavira or Lothal?
Thanks,
JN

I have not been to Dholavira, (I have been meaning to) but based on what I hear, you should visit both.
That brings in the constraint of time and your flexibility to travel from where you will be landing. If you are going to be in Ahmedabad, Lothal is close and will take one day if you want to spend time on site. Not very far away from there, there is Velavadar sanctuary with wet and dry land and facility to stay. Bring your vehicle.
If you have time to travel to Dholavira, and your own vehicle to go straight from Ahmedabad, you have to leave a day earlier because it takes more than 6 hours to reach.

The best way is to travel by car and on the way you can see some more places. As there is a fixed time to visit this place, please check with the time to enter the site from their website. And Friday the site is closed. More details can be obtained from their website.

The site - apart from the museum is open. So it can get very hot - which I presume is the weather post monsoons. If you are prepared for the weather, I do not see a problem.

Brother, there is a lot to visit in Ahmedabad specially the old city. For someone passionate about the history and very knowledgeable about the city and nearabouts, I would suggest you contact Mr. Haseeb Sheikh in Ahmedabad. He has extensive knowledge about Gujarat and would love to guide you around. I have had the pleasure of been taken around Lothal, Patan, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Champaner by him.
