One of India's premier private museums, the Calico Museum is part of the Sarabhai Foundation and is housed in a huge and beautifully maintained mansion not too far from the Sabarmati River, with a heavily wooded garden all around. The museum houses a large collection of not just embroidered, painted or interestingly woven textiles but other masterpieces as well, including bronzes, carved woodwork, and more.

Nobody is allowed into the museum just like that: you need to join a guided walk in order to visit. These walks are free, but you have to register on their website at least a month in advance, and then take along, on the day of the walk, the confirmation you would have received in response to your registration. We hadn't received our confirmation, and despite numerous attempts to get in touch with the museum staff - phone calls, even a hotel representative visiting the museum on our behalf - the staff simply refused to deal with us. Repeated emails too met with no acknowledgment, nothing. The distressingly snooty and unhelpful attitude of the staff was very off-putting.

You have to deposit all your belongings at the gate, even mobile phones (no photographs at all are allowed). The walk we went on, two hours' duration, began at 10:30 and took us through galleries of kalamkari, pichwai, Mughal miniatures, South Indian bronzes, Buddhist thangkas, and an exquisite 200-year-old Jain temple which was reassembled here at the mansion. The walk ended at a series of galleries explaining different methods and techniques of textile production and decoration.

Two walks a day are organized by the museum. Though the staff's attitude is terribly unhelpful and standoffish, at least the collection is beautiful.

The booking process I was warned about , but the experience took the cake . There is no way you can figure how to get a couple in from the advance booking process . I had a valid permit and yet denied entry for the spouse. The staff makes you feel that you are visiting Mecca and are rude as hell . For an overrarted Palika bazaar , you would do well to avoid and step a few metres ahead and visit the Kasturbhai Lalbhai museum which houses a wonderful exhibit on Indigo .

Be warned! You must do separate bookings for each person to come to this museum. I booked online and it was confirmed by email. I realised booking form didn’t specify how many visitors so I emailed back that we were a group of 3. On arrival an extremely rude man dressed in khaki told us we could only have one person. The other 5 people lined up were also being given a hard time. In the end we were told that no further booking was possible, not even for next day. We decided to send in 1 of our number. I went in and found myself the lone visitor surrounded by 4 or 5 of the khaki men, they were barking single word orders at me that I didn’t understand, but seemed to involve me leaving my bag and phone with them. I decided to leave, it was such a hostile environment, no good would come of my visit. So I didn’t see them museum, but I did have a bad experience. Maybe calico museum could read some of their reviews and make some changes. Surely the rudest people I have ever met in India!

We went yesterday to visit this splendid museum in Ahmedabad. The visit, free of charge, was booked two weeks ago by our tour operator since access to the museum is only possible by reservation, which must be made very far in advance. At the entrance a very unpleasant guard carries out a search with a metal detector and forces you to enter without cameras or cell phones. Further down the driveway you are subjected to a second search. I understand that they may not want photographers inside the museum, but why would they mind taking photos in the immense beautiful surrounding park? Once the searches are over, the visit begins guided by an elderly lady wearing a mask. The lady must be very fragile because both in the gardens and inside she keeps tourists several meters away and despite this she never takes off her mask. He speaks typical Indian English, semi-incomprehensible, which, with the mask, becomes even more incomprehensible. The visit lasts a couple of hours. The museum is splendid and the display of ancient fabrics protected by soft lights prevails. I entered in a bad mood because I didn't like the seizure of my cell phone and therefore my rating takes this into account, but if it hadn't been for this aspect I would definitely rate the museum with five dots.

I loved the textile collections The quality of work is superb
The collection is displayed very well I am very grateful the private collection is available to be viewed by the public
My negative comment would be that any wait time is not allowed on the property and it would be more friendly if a small area of the garden was open for the guests to sit and wait for the tour to commence.
Also the viewing of the collection is a little rushed . I would prefer a little more time to view textiles in detail.

Very rude front staff. We had to literally fight to get in even with reservations.. Staff needs to be trained to show basic courtesy to visitors. They were extremely rude and even the manager didnt have the time to hear our complaints.

In the website prior booking is mentioned for group tours. Without a proper information, we, a family of 3 visited this place with a great expectation, being a great lover of textiles, but came back in disappointment as the gate was closed. Later it was opened by a person who was not cooperative enough. Timings of the museum are also weird. We were told to contact the museum over phone, nobody picked up the phone, it was disconnected twice. Two more ladies were also waiting outside, and returned in disappointment.
What is the purpose of creating such a museum when people cannot visit it !
Total waste of time and effort !

This is no doubt an extraordinary private collection, but a different pathway is needed for guiding visitors. Rather than rushing a large group through a huge number of exhibits with minimal information, maybe the choice of a few key pieces to tell a story would be preferable. There is no doubt that the guide has great reverence for the exhibits, but there is very limited information provided, and the stories told do little to illuminate the pieces for the audience. The strident and didactic delivery feels like a memorised script. The atmosphere is not a welcoming one and questions are dismissed. The tour needs a break halfway with perhaps some questions discussion- two and a half hours is a very long time to be shouted at. Most textiles are shrouded in plastic wrap for conservation reasons, with a loss of experience in terms of seeing texture, or in the case of clothing pieces, any sense of movement or draping. I would still recommend but keep expectations low, these many beautiful things do not come to life in the current format.
