We were in old Manali for 3 days. It's a typical tourist place. Mall road is always buzzing. I found very cute porcelain dolls in karate poses just for rs. 50/-each. Manalsu River is not clean. Now government is making 4 lane road to Manali. So may be in 2 years, reaching Manali will be easy.

Beautiful river with cafes nestled in it's shore. getting bit polluted due to non stop tourism and adventure sports happening over there. But still it's keeping it's charm and u can sit on the stairs to enjoy the dip.

Great stay, only 600 rps a night (low season) for a double room, close to all local attractions in old manali, lots of shops and bars and restaurants close by, very quiet, would recommend!
Only problem there was the building work that started at 8am.. Maybe not to do with the property might be neighbours but still was frustrating as we were not feeling well and needed rest

The river has been polluted quite a bit by all the cafes by its shore and the adventure sports held on it. But still, it adds a charm to the town.

On day 3 of our trip, we took the road less travelled, i.e. just before the Palchan barrier there’s a mud track over the bridge that meanders to Old Manali.
Barely a few meters on the road, we were surrounded by apple orchards, and as we took a 360o peek from our vehicles, we were completely spell bound by the panoramic views of the snow caped mountains on the Rohtang, Solang, Hanuman Tibba and Hampta and beyond. It rained peaks on all sides. As special mention to the Hanuman Tibba glacier region, we were bang below and opposite that entire range - it looked so majestic, one could every single peak, glaciers, rivulets, grassland knolls…. We stepped out of the vehicle and were literally engrossed in a photo shoot that lasted 15minutes. We literally tugged along at a snail’s pace, so as to absorb the natural beauty around and we crossed a beautiful river bed - sparkling clear water. We were warned that during monsoon this track was not feasible. A little ahead, we went over a climb and stopped as the temptation to take a fresh look around the valley was too over powering.
The setting was unbelievable - mountain peaks galore, sprawling green fields, un-spoilt grassland knolls on the hills above (right below the towering peaks), beautifully crafted private properties, swanky cars, emerald green blooming apple orchards in the valley below, at least four water falls with varying intensity (bang opposite us). It looked absolutely like an ‘oasis’ in the middle of nowhere. It was unbelievable that Manali could look so picturesque.
As we went on a camera clicking frenzy, the weather took a turn and dark clouds hovered around the Hampta pass peaks. In the distant, one could see the misty rain falling and it looked as if very very thin streaks of rivulets from various directions were pouring on the mountain peaks against a dark grey background. Slowly the wind picked up and in no time, the entire valley on the eastern side was covered in mist and shallow rain. Everything looked opaque and in no time we were also blinded by this spectacle and suddenly it become very very chilly and we rushed into the warmth of our vehicle.
As we tugged along we came across interesting options for home stays and restaurants (mostly catering to international taste, Italian, Mexican… - the setting of each one of these was very unique, and it seemed that these joints have sprung up recently and from what we gather from the ‘locals’, these were gaining popularity over their more established cousins, i.e. the Drifters, Casa Bella, Café 1947, Johnson Café….
Slowly we inched towards the renowned ‘Boat Club’, frankly I was disappointed, probably coz of the massive vehicular traffic, too much of chaos and the sea of humanity that swamped the lawns - though I must admit that setting of the building was very picturesque, - the snow white building, flush green lawns and the serenely flowing Manalsu river. After a lot of deliberations, we decided to give it a miss, as it started raining. As we tugged along we reached the bend to the bridge connecting Old and New Manali - the road was lined with road side eateries, offering just about every cuisine in the land. We vented on foot to the local market, especially the area which had Israeli establishments and very this street reminded of the Fashion Street, Mumbai and Janpath, New Delhi. Of course we were not going to buy, it was more of an exploratory visit - it was very colorful and was an excellent option for casual dressing (i.e. dress down) shopping - I did like the thong’s that were on display…remember to bargain hard.
We eventually crossed the bridge and headed to the mall road area and it seemed nothing had changed since my first visit in the late 1990’s. We checked out the German bakery and the Italian eateries and were not impressed with the offerings on display and decided to move on - infact we were majorly disappointed with both the eateries. The market was buzzing with the tourists who were busy shopping for local artifacts, shawls etc. We came across the monastery at the back-lane and moved in and spent about 20 odd minutes. Inside the courtyard, it seemed like a riot of colors - with flaming red/ orange being the dominant theme. We then decided to take a walk in forest opposite the road - there were massive deodar trees and it seemed like a small village fair was going on, however nothing to explore and therefore we decided to move on. By now we were very famished and headed towards to one of the most famous eateries in town and I have covered this in my review tilted The Iconic ‘Johnson Café.
