This garden is terraced layout, fountains & Chinar trees. Best time to visit during spring or autumn when the flowers are blooming & the Chinar trees change color. Must Visit.

Nestled beside the ethereal Dal Lake, Shalimar Bagh emerges as a testament to Kashmir's cultural opulence. Leading my companions through its ornate gates adorned with Persian motifs, we embarked on a journey through time and tranquility. The symmetrical terraced lawns, adorned with cascading fountains and lively flower beds, painted a picture of serene harmony. Each step unveiled a new facet of beauty, weaving together history, nature, and artistry seamlessly. Shalimar Bagh is more than a garden; it's a portal to an enchanting realm where the whispers of the past dance with the vibrant hues of the present.

This is a bad time to visit this garden. There is a lot of construction and renovation work going on in the pagoda like structures.

Looks like an amazing garden in general. But right now a couple buildings are under construction and the water is turned off so the fountains are not there. It is in a beautiful setting and if this is your only chance to see it, I guess you go, but you know you’re missing the beauty of flowing water.

I had the pleasure of introducing my travel companions to the breathtaking beauty of Shalimar Bagh. Nestled on the eastern banks of the shimmering Dal Lake, this historic Mughal garden is a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and natural splendor.
As we entered through the ornate arched gate, adorned with intricate Persian motifs and colorful frescoes, my clients were immediately captivated by the serene atmosphere and timeless elegance of the garden. The symmetrical layout of the terraced lawns, interspersed with cascading fountains and vibrant flower beds, evoked a sense of tranquility and harmony that was truly enchanting.

The largest and most beautiful moghul garden in Srinagar.Visited by almost every tourist to Kashmir. So obviously it is crowded any time, but due to its vast area, it is not difficult to find lonely places to capture photos. So many big Chinar trees are there with a stream with non-functional water fountains flowing in the middle of the garden.

The views, Autumn colours on Chinar trees were beautiful, the garden itself is a treat but being under renovation there was a lot building material which scattered around which took away from the experience somewhat

We visited this garden towards end of September. It seemed to be under renovation. There were hardly any flowers and the springs were not working. Even the few flowers that were there were withering.
Renovation is necessary. However in such times it is better to keep the garden closed to the public. It was a waste of time and money. We could have utilized our time in seeing so many other beautiful places in and around Srinagar.Hope the authorities keep this in mind when ever there is renovation .

A surprisingly large garden area currently very well kept and colourful and of course the watercourses, foun-tain bases and buildings from 400 years ago when the gardens were constructed. The main building is in poor shape but enough remains to suggest the glamorous colours it would have been. Similarly most fountains don't work but the structures are there and some still operate. Nearby though Nishat Gardens showed Mughul structures still fully operating in wonderful gardens.

What do we learn from the architecture of shalimar bagh?
Why people should come and visit the shalimar bagh?
Skrevet 28. juni 2015
The history of Shalimar Gardens can be traced back to the 2nd century. King Pravarsena II from Vataka dynasty who ruled Kashmir from 79 AD till 139 AD was the founder of Srinagar. He built a cottage surrounded by a park close to Dal Lake and named it Shalimar. The name Shalimar comes from Sanskrit language which means “Abode of Love”. Over the centuries, the cottage was ruined, but the name Shalimar got stuck to the village where this was located.
In 1619 AD, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir renovated the garden into a Mughal Garden, to please his beautiful wife Nur Jahan and the two spent their summers here along with their courtesans. The three terraced Mughal garden is an adaptation of the Persian style of gardens. The gardens, designed around the central axial canal were used as- Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-khas and the Zanana area. The fountain pools have 410 fountains in total and are fed by the naturally flowing central channel of water, flowing down from the snow covered mountains forming the lovely backdrop to the gardens.
The black pavilion in the top terrace of Shalimar Bagh has the famous inscription in Persian, written by Persian Poet Amir Khusrau-
“
Agar Firdaus bar rōy-e zamin ast, hamin ast-o hamin ast-o hamin ast”.
Translated in English it means-
“ If there is a paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here”
A chronicler has described the magic of Shalimar Bagh thus:
"A subtle air of leisure and repose, a romantic indefinable spell, pervades the royal Shalimar: this leafy garden of dim vistas, shallow terraces, smooth sheets of falling water, and wide canals, with calm reflections broken only by the stepping stones across the streams".
