The fort provides a panoramic view of Srinagar valley from atop a hill, including some of the famous landmarks like Dal lake, Gurudwara Chatti Padshahi, Nishat Lake and the surrounding mountains. One needs to purchase entry tickets (Rs. 50 for an Indian citizen) at the bottom of the hill, and cars can drive up around 80% of the way to the fort. The area is secured by armed forces (Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF) and you will need to show your ID (post purchasing the entry ticket) to get past security and climb up to the fort. You will need to leave your ID with them and pick it up on returning. There is a little bit of climb involved to reach the fort from the security checkpoint - I would ballpark a climb of around 150 steps, thus probably not for everyone.

I was indeed awed at the first sight of the fort, which was built during the reign of Shuja Shah Durrani in 1808 - the size of the fort, situated atop a hill is quite impressive. While this structure is an excellent testament to Mughal era architecture and the skill and heritage of Kashmiris, I was disappointed with the state of preservation of the fort and amenities in the fort itself. While there are toilets at the top of the fort, they were dirty and extremely poorly maintained. It was sad to see things scribbled on the walls of the fort, certainly the work of some visitors to this property. There was a sizeable quantity of trash, in small plastic bags, disposed off indiscriminately within the walls of the fort, which felt distressing. Also, there was lack of information about the fort, its history and the importance - being a tourist attraction with such fantastic views, I would've expected authorities to provide more information and historic context and anecdotes regarding this structure, with plaques placed around the property, but nothing of that sort exists. Addressing these issues would go a long way in making this place much more attractive to visitors. The fort contains a small mosque, gurudwara and a Kali Mata temple. Probably the highlight of the Hari Parbat fort would be the gigantic Indian flag measuring 24 x 36 feet, mounted on a 100 foot mast that was installed in 2021 - there is a plaque near the flag mentioning the details of the installation. If you are someone interested in history or Mughal era architecture, or a traveler looking to visit a place slightly off the beaten path in Srinagar, Hari Parbat Fort should be on your itinerary when you find yourself in Srinagar.

A fort that is currently used by crpf. Houses two temples and a gurudwara. Offers spectacular views of Srinagar town, the Dal lake, Badam Wari. Please carry a government photo id to visit the place. Needs some effort to climb to the top. Entry fees is fifty rupees. The sheer breathtaking view from the top makes it worthwhile to visit.

The Fort looks an impressive structure from a distance, very imposing on the skline. Unfortunately close up it doesn't live up to expectations. Quite a long winding drive up. Security check, FOREIGNERS PASSPORTS, then walk a few hundred metres uphill over slightly unkempt grounds. Nothing in the castle itself on the history of the place and it's uncared for appearance is evident. Renovation work is going on but at the moment it's a sad sight.

The first fortifications on the site were constructed by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1950. He built an outer wall for the fort, and planned a new capital called Nager Nagor to be built within the wall. That project was never completed. The present fort was built by Afgan governor Atta Mohammad Khan in 1808 during the reign of Shuja Shah Durrani. It has the famous Muslim Shrines of Khwaja Makhdoom Sahib and Akhund Mullah Shah on the southern slope and a Shakti Temple on the western slope. On the southern side of the outer wall is a Gurudwara, which commemorates the visit of Guru Hargobind.

The gods invoked Shakti who assumed the form of a hari (myna) and flew to Sumer, picked up a pebble in her beak and threw it on Chand. The pebble grew into a mountain, crushed the demon and was later named Hari Parbat ("The Myna Mountain").

Hari Parbat, also called Koh-i-Maran, is a hill overlooking Srinagar, the largest city and the capital of the Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is 17 km from Srinagar railway station and 6.5 km from Lalchowk if you come by car. Please carry your Identification as this is guarded by army and they would ask for Aadhar or any form of identification at the foot hill and when you enter the main gate. There is a beautiful restaurant right outside the fort "MileStone" but it was closed when i visited. The drive from foothill to top of fort is serene and filled with natural beauty. You do need to take a stroll and walk from gate to fort entrance so better wear sports shoes for comfort.

This site is maintained by Archeological Survey of India and in my personal opinion it can be maintained better.

The place is managed by defence personnels. Please be careful in taking pictures as this place has army installations. the upper section of the hill houses the fort which will surely take your breath away, once you climb to the last step.

The view from here is great and gives a panoramic look. Srinagar city & dal lake looks great from the top. this place has a huge National flag that was recently (2021 August) installed. A good place to venture out and seen and feel 300+ year old heavy wooden doors.

Located at top of the hill in downtown Srinagar, this fort is a good place to enjoy the whole city from above. No ticket booth on the spot. We bought it at Makhdoom Sahib Ropeway, and the ticket man went along with us to the fort to open the main gate.

The big mountain near Nigeen lake in Srinagar is called Hari Parbat. There is an old Fort built by Mughals is in the hill top. One has to walk upto the top Fort. The entrance of the Fort is a big Gate structure called Kathi Darvaza. You could also find a Gurudwrara and Mathaji temple (the wooden windows of the temple is beautiful)

I went to Hari Parbat. The majestic mountain overlooking the city of Srinagar is called Hari Parbat. Besides the famous Hari Parbat fort, the mountain also has various shrines dedicated to several deities, the most prominent of which is Sharika Devi Temple enshrined by Goddess Jagadamba Sharika Bhagwati. It is great place to go.
