When in Keral, watching a Kathakali performance is a "must see" experience. Kathakali is one of the major forms of classical Indian dance. It is a 'story play' distinguished by elaborate costumes and face masks and colourful make-up. Arrive at the Cochin Cultural Centre early enough and you will see the actors applying their make-up. Each colour has a significance: red is for someone who has an evil streak; black for forest dwellers and hunters; a white beard signifies a divine being; yellow signifies a woman and green with lips painted brilliant coral red portrays noble characters and sages. During a performance the actors speak a sign language where words are expressed through hand signs, while emotions and mood are expressed through facial and eye movements. There are 24 main hand signs and 9 facial and eye movements. After the make-up has been applied comes the costuming (an art in itself) and the performance. All in all an extremely interesting experience and not to be missed.

My husband and I just loved our time here, first after being shown to our seat the two men started to apply they makeup Whow! That alone was fabulous it was a real art and fascinating to watch.
Then out came the costume and it took some time to dress him as lots of pieces to his formal dress.
Then the show started it depicted mime, eye movements and feelings it really was an experience we were pleased to have seen this.
Two man show with drummer.
It tells and story but you’ll have to go as I’m not telling you,
At the end the main “Lady” got my husband up on stage and did a small mime story with him it was just fabulous.

Half the fascination with this cultural show is the preparation. Makeup takes over an hour to apply and they will sit on the stage and apply it.
Also you are shown how the facial expressions depict the feelings, and this was a fascinating experience. Well worth a visit

First you get a preview of two men putting on theatrical makeup and getting transformed before your eyes.
Then one of them goes on stage and a narrator explains the different facial expressions for a range of emotions.
The actor rolls his eyes and scrunches up his face. Suddenly you don't see the man but the character he portrays.
In the last half hour, you get to watch a scene played out by two men where good triumphs over evil as always, played to live music performed by another man. Oh, there are no women in the Kathakali performance. All the female roles are superbly and hilariously done by one man.
It was a good hour of skilful performance and great entertainment in traditional Indian style which all can enjoy

This is not only a show but a complete cultural experience. The 2 performers who are wonderful, explain all the process and are excellent in their roles. The place is a bit over crowded and thw distribution of the chairs should be re thought. Nevertheless it was a great experience.

We arrived early for the performance as we had the pleasure of watching the performers actually on stage prepare their make-up and paint faces, which took a considerable amount of time.
Then the show started after giving some history for the performance and historical meaning behind the dances, hand movements, and mostly the facial expressions which has a meaning in itself.
The show was enjoyable and everyone in our group was very pleased with knowing a little more of the history of India displayed through art.

Saw two guys apply makeup and enact scenes from the story Narakasuravadham. The ability of the female role guy expressing various emotions was fantastic - what a great actor.

We attended the one hour make up demonstration followed by a one hour Kathakali performance. The makeup demo was interesting. The following performance is in 2 parts.
Part 1: a demo of the skills of the dancer and how they depict the various emotions. We found it to be very educational. The dancer was skilled. In Kathakali the eyes tell the story.
Part 2: A short dance with 2 dancers. The second dancer basically walked around the stage and moved his hands; he was not skilled. Not sure if he was a fill in for the regular performer.
The chairs were plastic and uncomfortable. At the end of the show there was a request for donations.
There must be better performances in Kochi! Search the internet to find another show which is recommended by the locals
The audience was primarily with large tours. There were no locals/Indians which in itself is telling.
