This is such an interesting place and gives a glimpse into the past of a great city. The steps up are incredibly steep, and then you step into the palce. The wall paintings are extraordinary, amazing details and worth stopping and studying- the more you look the more you see. There are artifacts, photos and plenty of well displayed info.
If you are in Kochi I think it is a must.

This part of Cochin is a tourist attraction with lots of interesting sites. A visit to the Ferry Terminal, Beach and off course the Mattancherry Palace is a must for the tourists interested in understanding Cochin and its ancient culture.

More of a museum than a palace, but good history and portraits of the Maharajahs, and two rooms plus underground ones with amazing old frescoes, and only IR10 entry.

We tried to drive down from the Jankar ferry terminal along Bazaar Street to Mattancherry Palace, but the street was so narrow that if there was a lorry parked on one side then we had to drive the car with two tires on the footpath. So we parked in one of the side lanes and walked part of the way.

The Bazaar Road leading up to the palace is lined on both sides with spice, antique, curio, perfume and tea trading shops. The shops are swarming with tourists, both foreign and Indian trying to get the best bargains. We bought some spices, tea, coffee and perfumes and then landed up in an antique shop selling old radios, enamel utensils, wooden statuettes, paintings and other memorabilia.

Finally we reached the Mattancherry Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue near Jew Town and these are tourist attractions in their own right. We had a cup of coffee in one of the cafeterias near the palace.

I never thought I'd spend a good half day searching through the wares of spice traders! But never say never. Wandering the Mattancherry area provided for a great insight into the spice trade, as well as the introduction to some spices I'd never heard of before. Do yourself a favour and make sure you wander upstairs in some of the buildings (don't be afraid of how unsafe they look!) to find hidden treasures and small vendors upstairs away from the busy street below. More than likely you'll be greeted with a cup of chai:) Fresh spices of course!

Mattancherry was once a busy spice and tea trading hub and now it is a prominent tourist center with attractions like the Paradesi synagogue, Jew street, Mattancherry Palace(Dutch Palace), Police Tourism Station and Museum, Dharmanath Jain Temple, Coonan Cross Shrine etc, Apart from these one can see numerous arts, crafts, antiques shops, spices shops cafeterias etc. The streets and shops were crowded with tourists and most of the shops and the attractions were live even during night when I visited Mattancherry one week back.

Thursday 28th October and we walked from Fort Kochi to this locality of Kocki. It was a distance of 2.3 Kilometres, which took us over 35 minutes to walk, we took the route via Pullupalam Road.

It would have been easier to take a taxi or a tuk tuk but we would have missed out on so much. Think we walked down roads that would not normally attract tourists.

There is rather a lot to see here including the 16th-century Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace, the ancient Jewish (Paradesi Synagogue and it's cemetery. There are a number of Mosques, Churches, Hindu Shrines and Temples including the Jain Temple.

We walked around Jew Town which is packed with shops selling Arts & Crafts, local spices, clothes and so much more.

There are a number of restaurants, cafes and shops selling statues, icons, ornaments and unusual items.

It was interesting to see the different types and styles of buildings in the area
