This one is away from the main complex of Temples and is rarely visited. Most visitors would be clueless about this place. It is only for the serious Tantra seeker and Devi sadhak who will feel and experience the immensely powerful Tantric energy here. I visited at dawn on full moon day with the moon setting on one side and the sun rising on the other. A true interplay of the male and female energies. Not for every one,

The Chausath Yogini temple is in ruins and is the oldest surviving temple at Khajuraho. It can be accessed from the Southern side of the Shivsagar Lake located on the main Khajuraho Road. Dedicated to Devi the temple is an indication that the cult of Yoginis was prevalent in the Chandela Kingdom.
We were intrigued as the guide books said that the temple is close to the Western Group of Temples and our guide just brushed it off, stating that it was in ruins and not worth a look. Thus after inquiring from asking a passerby we walked to the temple. Yes it is in ruins but it is worth a visit.
The temple was constructed before the temples of the Western Group and unlike other Chausath Yogini temples, it has a rectangular plan, while the other temples are known to be of a circular design.
The temple is located on a high platform and is made of large, coarse granite blocks, with an open courtyard in the centre. The courtyard was supposed originally surrounded by 65 shrine cells however only 35 now survive. Each cell has a small doorway and a tower. Except for one large cell all other cells are the same in size. The large cell is located in the centre at the rear and faces the Northern entrance. It was supposedly the shrine of Durga (Devi), while the other cells presumably housed the Yoginis.

Perhaps a very different type of temple ever seen. These are Ruins of ancient temple and are near the western group of Temples. One may visit it if interested in history.

Located near western group of temples but not part of them. Dedicated to yoginis, it indicates that this place was considered as a suitable place for tantra sadhana. Nothing much is left here and hence, hardly anybody visits it.

This was built even before the western group of monuments. It is said that Tantric practics would be performed here under the blessings of 64 yoginis (devis). The Temple is deserted and is close to the western temples. Its a 10 minute walk between both. The walk to the temple along the pond is very good. You can visit anytime of the day. This is not ticketed. We just heard that the the archaeology is probably working towards a larger plan of parking, access and renovation around this area.

This temple is part of the Western Group of Khajuraho Temples. It is also one of the oldest temples. This temple is made using coarse granite and in ruin condition.
