Visiting the Aga Khan Palace in Pune on Christmas Day was a serene and enlightening experience. The only wait was for buying the tickets, which can be conveniently purchased online via a QR code. It would be even more engaging if they provided commentary or self-directed headphones.
The Aga Khan Palace, built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, has a poignant history. Constructed to provide employment for famine-stricken villagers, the palace took five years to build at a cost of Rs 12 lakhs. Spanning 19 acres, with 6.9 acres covered by the palace and the rest by well-maintained gardens, it’s a sight to behold.
From 1953 to 1972, the palace housed a residential co-education school. In 1969, Aga Khan IV generously donated the palace to the people of India in honor of Gandhi and his philosophy. The Indo-Saracenic architecture, complete with pediments and turrets, adds to the palace's charm, and its 2.5-meter wide corridor encircling the entire building is a unique feature.
The Gandhi Museum within the palace, spread across six galleries, showcases numerous statues of Gandhi and others, with detailed exhibits on the Quit India Movement. Additionally, the samadhis of Kasturbha and Mahadev Desai are located here. The expansive, well-kept lawns offer a great opportunity for city dwellers to enjoy open spaces while learning about history and nature.

Great way to spend an hour or two learning about the ins and outs of the Quit India movement and Gandhi's involvement during this historic time. Beautiful gardens add to the serenity of the setting. Only a 30 minute bus ride from the GPO means it is easily accessible to those who may only have limited stay in the city.

The Aga Khan Palace stands as a poignant reminder of India's freedom struggle and the sacrifices made by its leaders. Its historical significance, combined with its architectural beauty and serene environment, makes it a must-visit destination in Pune. Whether you are a history buff, a student, or simply someone looking for a peaceful retreat, the palace offers a rich and rewarding experience

I found this really interesting. Well presented and engaging, the audio visuals really work and help to contextualise the Quit India movement. Highly recommended, especially for anyone seeking to broaden their knowledge of India and the role of Gandhi, and the oppressive British Empire.

We visited this palace as a family with teenagers. It is a beautiful place, and as you walk through the different rooms you can read and learn about Mahatma Gandhi. The gardens outside the palace are beautiful too. I highly recommend this visit if you’re in Pune

According to a legend, Aga Khan Palce was built by Sultan Mohammed Shah Aga Khan III at the behest of a spiritual leader Ismailli Nizari Muslim, head of a well known Shia Muslim sect mainly as a charitable gesture for feeding the people living in the surrounding areas. It is believed that about 1000 people were employed at that time. It became famous when Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi and his Secretary cum friend, Mahadev Desai were detained here for about 2 years by the Britishers in 1942, following Quit India Movement. During imprisonment here, Mahavair Desai died here followed by Kasturba Gandhi and they were buried here in a small garden behind thepalace. Later, after independence, Aga Khan IV donated this palalce to the Indian government and then this was converted into a museum-cum memorial. The palace is known for its architectural beauty and spacious gardens spread over an area of anearly 20 acres. There are many halls in this 3 storey palace showing large paintings and photographs narrating the life of Mahatme Gandhi and other leaders besides giving glimpses of the freedom movement. The visit is incomplete without the visit to the memorial or samadhi of Katurba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai who was very close to Gadhi. The palace also has a kiosk where one can have tea, cold drinks and snacks etc. The toilets or rest rooms are also availble behind the palace. It is a must see place and I stronly recommend it to the visitors. there is an entry fee also but the payment has to be in digital form as cash is not accepted here.

The entire palace was shrouded in beautiful greenery. The museum teaches so much history of Gandhiji, Kasturbai and Mahadev Desai and the Indian Freedom Struggle in general. The memorials of Mahadev Desai and Kasturbai (and a small Gandhiji memorial) with their ashes are here.
It is truly life-changing to tread through the paths that these great humans once tread and watch pieces of their life. Some of Kasturbai's and Gandhiji's personal items are also on display. Kasturbai passed away in one of the galleries here, it is the only locked gallery.

this place has memories of Gandhiji and Kasturba. The details are well presented in posters etc. but an audio guide would be even more interesting for the new generation. Only the ground floor is open for visitors. It looked like a dull-dead place. Need to add some life to this beautiful monument.

I've heard that photoshoot is prohibited at Aga Khan palace. Is that true? If not what do they usually charge for a pre wedding photoshoot lasting for 2-3 hours?
Skrevet 10. september 2019
They don't allow photography inside the building! But there is no restrictions on photography outside in the front lawns of the palace!!!
