4 starts for the maintaining animals. They looked active and healthy. 2 starts for infrastructure. Toilets are in very bad shape with almost no Maintenance. No hand soap or sanitizers. Also, the white clothes guide always approaches you and at the end you just see what they want to show. The good thing with that is you complete the zoo trip in 30 minutes with pictures and videos of animals but end up paying a lot and miss out seeing the whole zoo and other animals that these guides do not cover. Also our guide told us that boating, rope Way and toy train was closed and lion safari will show very less animals. He also said that the elephants are taken to jungle at 11:30 and are back in the evening only when we enquirer about not seeing elephants. Mixed feelings overall. Definitely avoid the guides.

My wife and I enjoyed our afternoon at this zoo. We were delighted with the cleanliness of the park and the many exhibits of animals from around the world. It was a hot day so remember to bring good drinking water with you. There are a few places in the zoo to by snack and drinks. The security made us feel that this was a safe attraction for us as Americans. for the most part people were friendly and welcoming to us. We didn't get to see the entire park. On our next visit trip to india, we will see the remainder of the animals.

Me and my wife live in USA and we got married in India this year, so here are some of the reviews for future travelers:

Being a native Odia who spent his childhood in Bhubaneswar, Nandankanan was one of the places I was super excited to show my wife as we both love animals. We like to go to zoos of all shapes and sizes, some small like Honolulu zoo, some massive like San Diego zoo.

As we walked into the entrance of the zoo, a lot of "guides" kept coming to us, asking if we need a guide. Generally, we just prefer to enjoy the zoo by ourselves. But my wife being a non-Indian, I decided to hire a guide, thinking it would be a good learning experience and the guide would get some income, especially during COVID times.

This was my biggest MISTAKE.

Instead of going to the guide office, we were escorted through security/bag check entrance as we had pre-booked tickets and everything was going good so far.

The guide then asked if we wanted to book a cart. I know Nandankanan is not too big, especially the viewing areas not including safaris and it was a good day to stroll, so I said no. The moment we said that, our guide turned into a different person.

I guess he didn't want to walk, he said I have another party coming in, so he can't help us. I was confused, I was like can you ask any of the other guides if they can add us to their group. He was like, no, all english speaking guides are pre-booked. I was irritated by his antics by now and I was like alright I am going to the guide office and let's figure out why you asked me in the first place if you are pre-booked. As I started walking to the guide office, he was like, sir please, I will get you another guide. He goes and brings a plain clothes man (all guides had a khaki stye attire) and says he is great, he will help you out. (Trust me this is the abridged version, he pretended to call on the phone before getting this guide and wasted 15 minutes)

If I was by myself, I would have gone to the guide office to find out what was up with this guy, but I was with my sister and wife who seemed tired by now so I decided to just go with the plain clothed "guide". This guy negotiated our tour for a 90 minutes walk but walked at a pace like he had to use the toilet and finished almost 30 minutes early and gave us exhaustion from speed walking :) His narration was basically reading the boards, imagine something like - This is tiger, tiger is big cat. Next. No matter how irritated I was, I was kinda amused, like why did I waste money getting this "guide"
After the guide was done with his "excellent" services, we just walked around a bit and called it a day.

Overall, my recommendation is - spend time in Nandankanan by yourself and support the conservation efforts. It is a relatively small zoo, especially if you have been to zoos in India or overseas in bigger cities and if you have remembered nothing from my review - get no guides, especially those who approach you :) and to the authorities in Nandankanan, please get rid of these terrible guides who ruin visitors' day in the zoo

We came all the way from Kolkata to experience the safari but had to go back by visiting only the zoo portion of Nandankanan. The park had only three buses which was inadequate to cope with the rush of visitors. Those willing to wait in the serpentine queue got to experience the safari. Also one has to walk back two kilometres from the safari gate. These was no option of a drop. Overall disappointed. It was pretty chaotic, there were touts and you need to be careful not to fall for them.

Of all the Zoos we have visited Nandankanna takes the cake.
The entire landscape is very well manicured, clean & well kept. Ensure you hire a guide who will help you manouver through the vast expanse of the Zoo. The guide can be seeked at the time of taking the Entrance Ticket.

The Zoo has the famous White Tiger which is a sight to watch. Ofcourse they have teh fiersome Lion & a large collection of the Tiger. There are a hots of Animals - you can decide what all you want to see & inform the guide. A brisk pace of covering the Zoo and seeing all animals requires atleast 2 hours.

A must see attraction!!!

Fauna and flora with so many things for the little ones to see feel and learn. A must visit place for all age group. It's better to start early, you can cover a lot of it when there is minimal crowd as well as the outside temperature is good.

I love going to Zoos, and it turned out to be the hidden treasure as far as Indian Zoos are concerned,

The Good:
1. Reasonably priced tickets
2. Online booking easily available
3. One of the best Zoos if you want to see a lot of healthy and happy tigers
4. One of the cleanest Zoos in India with large enclosures and sufficient space for the animals
5. I guess the only Zoo where the name of the animals are also written outside the enclosure
6. A lake inside the Zoo is a bonus - provides great photo opportunities
7. OTDC restaurant is reasonably priced - I'd advise taking 'Thali's for faster service
8. Transport inside the Zoo (Golf cart , Safari Bus and the train) is well managed

The Bad:
1. Sometimes the site crashes - OTP issues faced
2. You can book only once from 1 mobile number

The Ugly:
1. Food inside the Zoo is not permitted but this is not managed well...there should be better arrangements

Overall, I'd highly recommend going to Nandan Kanan if you are going to Bhubneshwar.
