If you have to do a tour in India and you have to save on days Bikaner is definitely the stop to skip. The fort is beautiful but absolutely not comparable to the beauty of other forts in Rajahstan. Even more bypassable is the museum of former colonial objects.

I have visited a lot of palaces in India and think that this is the most magnificent one. The sheer quality of workmanship in the key rooms has to be seen to be believed. Each generation of the family have added new sections and the entire place from the 'rain' room' to the remarkable mirror room to the views to the plane are incredible.
There is an audio tour which is very informative and I had some of the rooms to myself by arriving early. There is a small museum on site that has some spectacular clothes, furniture etc from the royal family. Interestingly the entrance gate is a temple so if you come early you can engage with the worshippers. The palace opens at 10 but the museum is separate and opens at 9 so is worth visiting first.
When compared with the Jodhpur Palace, a few things could be improved. While details, these let the visit down and also compromise income - earning potential - especially from foreigners - which makes little sense in what should be one of the top tourist attractions in India.
1- The audio tour for some reason goes in the opposite direction to the tours for Indians which is a little odd and led to some waiting for big groups to go through certain narrow sections. It also appeared that the Indian tour groups got the raw end of the deal with sub-par information given in a rush by guides - I would recommend Indian tourists to opt for the audio tour as well.
2 The over-ear headphones on the Jodhpur audio tour were a much more hygienic option than the in-ear headphones in Bikaner which are liable to spread germs and kept falling out. This was a shame as the contents of the audio tour is first-class and the choice of in-ear buds is in contrast to every other audio tour I have experienced in Europe and makes no sense.
3 The other facilities for visitors - toilets, cafe and shop - definitely need improvement in Bikaner.
The shop consists of a few postcards and books while in Jodhpur there is an extensive shop selling a range of high-end goods - they could make a lot of money from tourists in Bikaner if they did a better job.
There is an outdoor cafe but the range is limited and an indoor cafe - or at least umbrellas to provide shade in the outdoor cafe - with a better menu would make more sense given the climate, and would also be another opportunity to bring in much needed income.
The toilet block needs to be demolished and rebuilt - not up to date or well maintained - most toilets locked, others dirty, no soap etc. At odds with most other facilities in tourist sites across India in this day and age.

Junagarh Fort is located in Bikaner, in the arid region of the Thar desert, in Rajasthan; it was built in the second half of the 16th century, during the reign of Rao Raja Singh.
It is one of the few forts in Rajasthan that is not located on a hill, and the city of Bikaner has grown around it; despite its position, apparently unfavorable for a possible defense, it seems that the fort has never been violated by anyone.
The fort, made of red and yellow sandstone, has massive walls, more than 4 m thick and about 12 m high, suitable for resisting enemy attacks; seven doors open there, two of which are main. The imposing door facing east (“Suray Pol”, or Gate of the Sun) receives the rays of the rising sun, which is considered a good omen, and is reinforced on the outside with studs and large iron spikes, designed to repel attempts of breaking through elephants during an attack.
The same reinforcements are placed on Karan Pol, the second main gate; next to this door is the Daulat Pol, next to which there are the red imprints of 41 hands, belonging to the wives of the Maharajas of Bikaner who fell in battle, who sacrificed themselves on their husband's funeral pyre with the "sati" rite.
Inside the surrounding walls, palaces, pavilions, and numerous Hindu and Jain temples. The palaces are richly decorated and equipped with a large number of rooms, as each ruler did not intend to live in the same rooms as his predecessors, and therefore ordered the construction of new apartments.
Inside the buildings, different styles coexist, which have characterized the different eras that have followed, you can see the signs of Rajput architecture, influenced by that of Gujarat and that of the Mughal rulers, to move on to the Anglo-Saxon one.
The visit route allows you to admire the various pavilions of the palace, palaces themselves, admiring the splendor and wealth with which the rulers of Bikaner loved to surround themselves; large courtyards with skillfully sculpted walls made of sandstone and marble, and refined and elaborate floors of a thousand colors, rooms with rich decorations handmade by skilled craftsmen, with splendid colors, mosaics, mirrors, and colored glass.
We concluded the visit with eyes full of wonder.

Originally called Chintamani and was renamed Junagarh or "Old Fort" in the early 20th century when the ruling family moved to Lalgarh Palace outside the limits of the fort. It is one of the few forts in Rajasthan which is not built on a hill. The modern city of Bikaner has developed around the fort.

Junagadh Fort is a beautiful fort. Well maintained by the royal family, it is an artist's delight. Intricate designs on its walls, beautifully carved jharokha windows, open spaces carved out majestically and a riot of colours in all the artwork, albeit very subtle. The fort has a lift too, but even otherwise you need to climb a not so steep ramp and then a few stairs only. It is one fort in Rajasthan that is not atop a hill. The museum is avoidable. Saw a rare sight there - a woman guide!

i am planning for Bikaner, Jaisalmer and jodhpur from kolkata can you suggest me how i plan which place first i visit? Hiw many days will taje to cover all??
Skrevet 13. juni 2018
You can go to jodhpur first. Visit Jaswant thada (1hr), Meherangadh fort (4/5 hrs), Umed bhawan palace. You will need minimum 1 day for jodhpur.
Next day you can proceed to Jaisalmer. It takes 4/5 hrs to reach. On the way visit war museum (2 hrs) few kms before jaisalmer. You can visit gadisar lake, stay in tents near Sam sand dunes. Its a one of a kind experience. Do camel rides and dont miss the jeep safari early morning. Visit bada bagh, Optionally visit kuldhara ( abandoned village few centuries back). You will need minimum 1 and 1/2 days for jaisalmer.
Next proceed to Bikaner, takes 5/6 hrs from jaisalmer. Junagadh fort is must visit and go to museum as well and will need 4 hrs.

What are the timings to visit Junagarh Fort? Is it recommended to visit during daytime or around 4-5 P.M. to see evening lights if any??
Also, what time should be budgeted to visit the Fort properly . Have two fit senior citizens with me (3 adults)
Skrevet 29. oktober 2017
it is better to see this fort during daytime to visit all the sections including a museum. I am not sure if there is a light show in the evening but the fort is more beautiful inside rather than from outside so daytime would be better. At least 3 to 4 hours may be required since there is a lot to walk around
Skrevet 29. oktober 2017
yes sir junagarh fort open all day of week

Hello I am planning to visit India in September. Will be taking a car/driver from Delhi . Would your recommend staying one night in Mandawa and then continue to Bikaner or would you skip Mandawa? Also, how is the drive from Delhi/Mandawa and Bikaner? how long it will take on leisurely drive? Bikaner one day is enough? We plan to go form Delhi/Bikaner/Jeselmar/Jodhpur/Nath dwara . Any suggestions will help. Many thanks.

Hi! September may be warm. well I went to Jodhpur, Jaisalmer,Bikaner and back to Mumbai via Jodhpur in Jan end was very chilled. Bikaner one day is more than enough if u visit only d fort and camel farm but if u want to visit Karni Mata Temple then some more time is needed. Nath dwara is near Udaipur i guess then u may add Udaipur too it worth visiting. If u still want to plan i will be happy to guide u.

I am traveling to Bikaner with my wife and 8 year old son in March.
1. how much time does it take to see the fort if not in detail?
2. is a Guide required?
3. is a Audio Visual pass worth ? if yes what are the timings?
Skrevet 12. februar 2017
I went to the fort with my Husband and there were no requirement for guide. We purchased the audio guide and I liked it very much. With the audio guide, it took us 3 hours to complete the tour. We learned a lot about the history and really enjoyed the visit.

Hi Maulik
You will probably spend 1 to 2 hours in the Fort. There are two options for guide. An audio one or a local one. They offered their services for 200 rupees for an hour but I am sure you will get it for less.
Across the road from the Entrance is a restaurant called Gallops which does good food and cold drinks.
A five minute drive away is the Bhairon Vilas heritage hotel which is a great place to stay. Has a pool, cafe, restaurant and a bar.
Have a great trip with your family 😎
Skrevet 13. februar 2017
The fort timings are 9am -6pm.
Avoid the starting and ending time because of the rush.
The Fort guide takes in people in rounds of 10 mins. All people queued up in 10 minutes are taken by a particular guide to visit around the fort. This should take approximately 2 hrs.
