This is the fifth safari spot in India to see tigers. It's been 4-5 years since my last safari in India, so I noticed a sudden increase in the number of Indian visitors. Therefore, there are a lot of jeeps, so when you find a tiger, you can't move. It's all down to luck how the tiger moves, but I couldn't take a good photo in the shadow of the other jeeps.

Tiger spotting in Ranthambore.
Ranthambore National Park is about 160 kms from Jaipur.
Theoretically, you need to book 90 days in advance on the Rajasthan Tourism website to get into the park since the number of vehicles are strictly limited. However, one can approach an agent and get a ticket. The vehicles are strictly controlled, but it’s possible that the tickets are cornered by the agents. We paid 1300 per head ( the official rate for Indians is 850).
Getting a Gypsy at short notice is nigh impossible, so we piled into a 20 seater Canter.
The ride into the park at this time of the year is through dry forest with most leaves having fallen off and rugged cliffs around. The park is divided into zones and only a limited number of vehicles are allowed into each zone. We were in zone 3. There are several lakes in this zone and you can see the occasional shikar building which were used till the early days after independence. Abandoned now.
One can see some deer ( sambar and chital), lots of peafowl, herons and cormorants and crocodiles.
The Canter is a bit of a bone shaker and one is hoping that the spinal discs will remain in place.
Suddenly one can see a number of vehicles gathered. There is the tiger! At first a mere shadow, well camouflaged by the grass. Patience pays off. Riddhi gets up and moves across in full view with her three cubs in tow!
A word of caution: one needs a bit of luck to spot a tiger. In the dry season, chances are somewhat better because the tigers come near the water. This is also the hottest season (I went in April and it’s very hot). Other methods to increase your chances are to go several times.

Excellent group tour .
The guide was excellent. .
It gets very hectic. The first route is n the morning just in one zone where there are various species of wildlife .
The 2nd trip mid afternoon was where you visited another zone where mainly the tiger is spotted.
Long afternoon in very hot sun and open top safari vehicles so make sure you have plenty of water, hat sunscreen and as it is very dusty on route a mask or Face covering
Saw 8 tigers in total that was a very lucky day

Unfortunately the tiger was not seen. They explained to us that the large park is divided into areas ranging from 1 to 12 and the concentration of tigers is found in the first 3/4. We visited the 8th and the 9th. Obviously there is no certainty but the probabilities are higher in the first ones. A little disappointing due to the lack of other animals, but still fun.

We had two safari drives in the morning and afternoon. Our family were unfortunately split with 2 people in one canter going to zone 4 in the morning and 1 person in another going to zone 1. Zone 4 we saw nothing but deer and birds it was a very disappointing 3 hours especially knowing that my mum would be seeing something in zone 1 as she's very lucky...we found out on our return she saw a tiger, cub and 2 leopards!!

In the afternoon we were together thankfully and visited zone 3 with great luck a tiger and her 3 cubs!! We were ecstatic after a miserable morning for two of us. It really is all about luck on the day as each tiger has it's own territory and I think zone 4 only had 1 male tiger and another crossing zones 4/5 to find that in 20km is impossible as we found out. Zones 1 and 3 were lucky for us. We saw loads of big crocodiles in the afternoon too and a mongoose as well as monkeys both trips.

The drivers are maniacs and the canters are awfully uncomfortable bouncing along the tracks but it was worth it to see such beautiful animals in the wild.

Our safari reservation made by a local agency was messed up and there was no vehicle for us. We had to have our driver take us to the main road where we watched 15 safari vehicles that were not filled pass us by until we finally ended up with a vehicle that picked us up. So we lost precious time. Do not believe these photos. You have a minuscule chance of seeing any tigers. It is dependent on pure luck and we accept that. What we do not accept is that after we arrived at the lodge with a long drive from Jaipur we were rushed through lunch, had to wait for a vehicle and then were driven an hour and a half over horrible bumpy roads to enter the park at the furthest possible point. Our guide spoke almost no English and gave the entire tour in Hindi to the family sharing our vehicle. Fortunately the father spoke excellent English and did some translating for us. But it didn’t matter. There was absolutely nothing to see except a few deer and birds and the guide offered no explanations about the park. Again we accept that a safari is not a zoo and that what you see is never guaranteed but we spent an hour driving around the park and then another hour and a half to get back to the lodge. The next morning we woke up at 5 am to have a repeat drive. Back to the second furthest entrance and again a guide who barely spoke. The whole experience was absolute BS. I give a poor rather than a terrible rating because the staff at the Tigress Lodge were very nice and the food was decent. The room however was musty and we had to wash everything in our suitcases several times to get rid of the smell.

Beautiful park. Wrap up very warm in the morning. It was freezing! Be patient, tigers are elusive. Lots of monkeys and exotic birds. Lovely scenery.

Be aware that only 20% of the park is open to tourists so good tiger sightings can be very random. Although our accommodation was described as 10 mins from the park it was actually a very uncomfortable 45 mins drive in the dark and cold to the park entrance in the morning. Very little wildlife sighted last week - probably much better to go after the rains. I booked four safaris and had one sighting.

Thanks to the recommendation of the manager of Anantvan Ranthambore By ShriGo Hotels, we were able to book a safari that made a tiger sighting very likely... and we were not disappointed.

The landscape, a canvas of lush greenery and ancient ruins, sets the stage for a thrilling safari. Ranthambhore is more than just a tiger reserve; it's a haven for nature enthusiasts. The guides and rangers are not just experts; their passion for wildlife adds an extra layer of excitement to the journey.

The best time to visit, in my opinion, is during the dry season (October to April). While the water sources dwindle, it concentrates wildlife around the remaining oases, offering a higher chance of spotting majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

An exclusive tip: Opt for early morning safaris. The dawn light bathes the reserve in a golden hue, and the animals are often more active during the cooler hours. Patience is key; nature unfolds at its own pace.

The reserve's commitment to conservation is commendable. However, it's crucial to remember that wildlife sightings are not guaranteed; they are a gift from nature. Regardless, Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve is a must-visit for anyone seeking a harmonious blend of adventure and serenity.
