We booked a gypsy jungle safari online. The online booking process was smooth. I was also charged for camera and LMV parking during the booking process. When we reached the safari point, the staff asked me to park on the road. I don't know why they charged me for parking. The safari started on time. There was no guide, the driver could not speak any language other than Tamil, so it was difficult to communicate and the whole trip was like we were on entirely our own looking around trying to spot wildlife. It seemed like there is only one track in the jungle and the driver kept going on that path like a robot without stopping. We had to tell him to stop so that we could take some pictures. Unfortunately, we could not spot any animals except a wild boar and a captive elephant. An obvious comparison comes up with the Bandipur safari. First of all, you pay almost 5K at both Mudumalai and Bandipur but the safari lasts only one hour in Mudumalai whereas duration at Bandipur is 2 hours. Bandipur does not charge for regular small cameras but Mudumalai does. At Bandipur, a guide accompanies you on the safari who explains the flora and fauna of the forest. Most of these guides can speak English or Hindi besides Tamil and Kannada which is a plus. Lastly, it is true that animal sighting is a matter of luck but it is a matter of fact that Bandipur has much more successful sightings compared to Mudumalai. Overall, the safaris at Mudumalai can be better managed and organized. It is clearly not worth paying for a safari at Mudumalai.

Since we have a lot of trouble sorting out the costs and the fakes to visit this reserve, I'm making a little overview so that the next ones have it easier than us.
You have different ways to visit the reserve
1. Take the local bus and stop at Tupakadu. Certainly the cheapest option but I didn't see anyone walking in the reserve (probably prohibited)
2. Take a private jeep (tuk-tuks are prohibited) from Gudalur for example. Jeeps cannot take small dirt roads, only the main road. Which for me is not a big problem since we see a lot of animals on the side of the road (deer, buffalo, peacocks, wild and domesticated elephants). It cost us 1500 r. Two people for 2 hours on site.
3. Take government buses (very expensive: 3500 r. Per person.) They can go everywhere but I'm not convinced that a bus is the best option for visiting a park..
4. I saw that you could take approved jeeps to the Tupakadu office. Undoubtedly the most interesting option but which also has its drawbacks. 4500 r. + 700 r. Per person.
Be careful, we were invited to go to the elephant camp (300 r. For foreigners, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.). I don't really recommend. You see the elephants being fed but they are chained by their legs (safety of the keepers). Personally, I only like elephants in the wild.
On the other hand, you can come across Indian women washing their clothes and wild elephants a few meters away along the river and everything goes very peacefully. Beautiful show

The Mudumalai tiger Reserve was the highlight of my 6 weeks in south India ( Tamil Nadu) . I have never been to India before and spent 6 days at the Jungle hut on the edge of the Mudumalai Reserve. On the first night there was a wild bull elephant next to the summing pool at the Jungle hut, he feed there for a few hours and moved on in the early morning. I also saw deer and monkeys just out side my room, (see pix). The staff and particularly the management at the jungle hut
were very good, accommodating, helpful and inclusive. I would recommend a visit.
The only down side was the elephant camp was closed for a week due to a visit from the President of India, incredible India all right!

Guys..the govt arranged Safari disappoints you because the route taken by them are not frequented by wild animals. Instead you can see max wild animals on highway roadside as the lush new grass shoots on roadside attract elephants, deer, bison and other herbivores.
So avoid spending money on Safari which is useless. Visit to nearby Theppakadu elephant camp is worthy.

I'm not sure if I can call it Safari. It's not easy to get any information about safari options and elephant camp, until you actually get in the park. Prices for governmental safari are ridiculous. Probably governmental guides will push you to pay more or buy something. I had much better experience in other countries. Not worth the price.
