The SOS bear and elephant rescue centres are located an hour from the centre of Agra. Regardless of distance we decided we wanted to visit to learn more about the animals and support the work they are doing and booked a taxi driver for the day at a cost of 3,500RS. Visiting the 2 centres also presented an ideal opportunity to visit the Tomb of Akbar the Great which is on route and quieter than the main sites. We contacted SOS direct to arrange our tour as you cannot just turn up. Visits are limited for animal welfare.
We had a really interesting educational tour of both SOS facilities. If you have a passion and interest in animal welfare then you will enjoy a visit here, however if you are expecting an experience that is similar to a zoo then you will be disappointed. They ask for a donation of 2,500RS per person and we were happy to pay this as we really enjoyed our tour. It is also important to understand that without donations they are unable to continue the amazing work they do. Hearing the history of the animals is heart breaking, however we felt happy this organisation exists and there are people who work so hard and passionately to ensure the animals can live out the remainder of their lives in a happy place. Note there is also a small charge levied by the bird sanctuary. This is because SOS is located within the grounds and unfortunately this charge is unavoidable. This was slightly frustrating, as birds are only there during the winter and were there out of season.
In summary a very special place.

I arranged two weeks in advance to visit the Wildlife SOS Bear Facility via email. I arranged the visit for myself and two other adults. This cost 500 rupees per person to enter the bird sanctuary (the facility is situated inside this), an additional 100 rupees for the taxi that we had hired, and a 1000 rupee donation to Wildlife SOS per person on exit. The cost of this facility was well worth it as this is one of the best experiences we have had in India so far. Our time slot was 3-5pm.
We had arranged in advance for our taxi to take us to the facility, wait on the grounds, and then take us back to Agra afterwards. I would recommend this as the facility is quite far away, I am not sure if it would be very accessible via public transportation.
We had an excellent guide for the visit who greeted us upon arrival. He was very friendly and spoke fantastic English. He first showed us a short documentary style video explaining the story behind Wildlife SOS and the sanctuary. We then visited the bear hospital where we met the animal doctor. Our guide then showed us around the whole facility. We saw so many beautiful bears who were clearly very happy and well looked after.
This is a very ethical facility and the work they do for their animals is truly incredible. I highly recommend for those visiting Agra - an experience not to be missed!

We made an appointment to visit (bookings are essential so a guide is available), 1000INR per person + 100 per car, about one hour from Agra. In hot weather it is best to go in early morning as bears moved inside to be fed at around 10am and chose to remain in their dens. The one bear that remained outside was asleep. This was a most interesting trip as the guide was very well informed, and had an extremely good knowledge of the backgrounds and needs of each of the bears that was able to be observed by visitors. This is a minority of the 100 or so bears that live in the sanctuary. He was generous with his time.
We were present at the sanctuary for about two hours, met one of the vets, watched a heart rending video, were shown a small shop which sells hand made products, and were able to take photos and ask questions. Coincidentally, Vistara featured this sanctuary and its founders in their current (May) in flight magazine and our hotel, Oberoi Agra, supports this sanctuary.
It was a privilege to have this experience and to learn of the vital conservation, education, social reform and rescue work being done by this organisation.

I really liked the place. Bears may be hard to spot, but I liked the way they explain the history and the intent behind this place. If you pay some donation, they can take you inside near the bear cage and explain more details, otherwise the tour will last hardly few minutes.

Very informative and enlightening. Staff is great. You don’t see much of the bears, but there are monkeys and deer walking around. And you’ll have a chance to see a few bears.
The surrounding area is a bird sanctuary so the birds in the area are great as well

We visited the elephant sanctuary. It was a amazing experience. Their ethical and humane treatment of animals is fantastic. You can tell they put a lot of thought and care into improving the elephants’ daily lives. They do not do rides or interactions here, because that’s what is best for the animal, but you do have the opportunity to get very close and observe their daily care. Our guide was excellent and we could tell he was very passionate about the subject. I would recommend this elephant experience as the only experience one should take if you truly care for the animals.

Informative, interesting and worth a visit. These people are trying their best to help elephants and from a vets perspective, they are doing a good job. They need more attention and awareness.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I visited both the Agra Bear Rescue Facility and the Elephant Conservation and Care Center and the experience was incredible. It was amazing to see these beautiful animals up close and learn from the caring and knowledgeable staff about all the work being done to protect them (including the #refusetoride movement - don't ride elephants!!). We highly recommend visiting Wildlife SOS.

Amazing! once in a life time experience. Watched documentary, guide was polite and very passionate about the wildlife. We loved visiting the place. The hospital facility is amazing. The sloth bears are having best time in the rehabilitation centre. There are around 150+ bears.
I would encourage all the localites and tourists to visit the place atleast once. They have beautiful souvenir's shop where handmade stuff made by tribal people is displayed.
The experience was so exotic that i cant write it fully in this review.
Overall best experience! 🐻

The overall experience was amazing, but the Volunteering activities (fruit/ vegetable cutting, creating the enrichments for the Elephants, including a mock sugarcane field) and the 'Walk with the Elephants' were the stand-out for me.
The staff was very courteous, humble and knowledgeable. Their heart wrenching stories about the rescued Elephants and Bears made me realize the inhumane side of the 'performing bears and ride-giving elephants'.

What's the best way to travel here from Agra? I'm looking to do this as cheaply as possible!
If a tax is suggested what should I be paying to ensure I don't get ripped off?
Thank you!

We booked a specific time slot via the SOS Elephant Sanctuary website. We arrived for the mid-day visiting slot and were there for 2 hours. We chose this start time as we were staying in Bharatpur and it was over an hours drive away. They have a shop with items made by local people with bags, throws, carved items, fridge magnets, T-Shirts, etc. All sales help them raise funds to save more elephants and buy extra land to keep them. There is also a cafeteria for drinks and light snacks. Admission is by a donation (currently 1500INR per person) Do go if you have the chance. You will be moved by the experience.

Hi, I am planning to come to volunteer next weekend. I have two questions. 1. Do you have a place to stay within the sanctuary and can it be booked 2. I have two dogs and they always travel with me, is it possible to get them too or are pets forbidden inside?

Hi I hope you got your visit sorted. To confirm yes they have a volunteer house where you stay, eat etc and they transport you to the sanctuary each day.
Always best to book via the website in advance to ensure they have the space. Thinking dogs probably not allowed but you need to check with SOS
