Being my second time in Varanasi and having more days available I visited this fort which is a little neglected and is located outside the center passing over the long bridge with a tuk tuk for the sum of 150 rupees you can get there in 10/20 minutes depending on traffic and starting point.
Inside there are some vintage cars, some carriages, costumes and weapons, the part that struck me the most was the underground tunnel that leads to the external part overlooking the Ganges, there is a small temple with a priest who after leaving an offering as always happens in India, imparts the blessing.
If you don't have much time you can avoid it and experience more of the emotions that the various ghats and internal alleys of Varanasi give.

Little away from Varanasi town.Need to take Auto on hire(bargaining solicited).
Museum is not maintained. Lot of items viz dress, ammunition, swords, knife, furniture all belonging to Raja on display and obviously covered with dust.At one end you can see the river Ganges. The scene is pleasant.
You have to take number of stiff stairs to cover entire fort.Old people with knee problem are discouraged.

Average fort... Not well maintained... lack of Uber and other similar facilities on the way there... had to go via Auto rickshaw...dusty roads... very poorly maintained museum...half of the fort is inaccessible and in poor state... Not worth the visit in my opinion

This is a private collection of the then-Royal family of Banaras.
My family members have been here 10-15 years ago, & they remmeber it to have been in better state as well as more popular!!
1. There are 7 or 8 vintage cars... the poor things are is such bad maintenance... they're COVERED in dust, scratches... who knows if they're whole... or the internal mechanisms are removed... & the poor things are ridiculously displayed behind grills, which makes it look like they're imprisoned!! There are 6-7 horse-drawn carts too... the situation is similar.
2. There's a small gallery of royal clotjing, the displays are literally turned to dust & in tatters
3. The arms gallery is comparatively well-kept, well arranged, & well-labeled. There are some ceramics & some clocks on display, & a palanquin gallery too, these too are more-or-less well kept.
4. Every room, every wall has "Rs 500 fine on taking photographs" & "Rs 5000 fine on making video calls" notices 😳🙄 There are staff in every room to prevent you from taking pics... so I asked one of them, where should I deposit this Rs 500... & that person took offence. 🤷‍♀️
Seriously, if staff was engaged instead, to take care of the exhibits, & to impart information, then the place would have been a delight.
5.visit the ghaat. The Gangaa-facing wall of the building is beautiful. It's actually too small to be called a fort... it is probably a fortified haveli... but maybe I had a distorted overevxpectation! Basically, the building too is in a bad shape of repairs.

Small and abandoned fort. It is not worth it if you have seen other forts in Rajastan, some of which ultimately resemble each other in style and are much more beautiful and well-kept.

Most disappointing.
The historically wonderful building is unkept and needs upkeep
The artifacts are excellent in nature but badly neglected, with layers of dust and cob webs. The vintage cars section looks like a garage full of rusted decaying cars.
The weapon section is better but the documents, textiles and animal trophies like those of lion ,tiger ,bear need immediate preservation, they are badly kept and are being eaten up by insects and destroyed by dust.
Plating, airconditioning and proper lighting are missing. The worst museum ever seen by me.

Ramnagar Fort in Varanasi, which is a popular tourist attraction in the city. The fort is located on the eastern bank of the Ganges River, opposite the Tulsi Ghat. It was built in the 18th century by the Kashi Naresh Raja Balwant Singh, who was the ruler of Varanasi at that time.

The fort offers a great view of the river and the surrounding areas, and visitors can also visit the weapon museum to see the collection of arms and ammunition used by the Maharaja of Varanasi. The fort also houses a museum where you can see old artifacts, including manuscripts, weapons, costumes, and vintage cars.

However, it's unfortunate to hear that the fort is poorly maintained despite the entrance fee. It's always important for tourist attractions to be well-maintained to provide a good experience for visitors. Nonetheless, the fort remains a beautiful and historically significant site to visit in Varanasi.

Very sorry to say this but it's a absolute waste of time. The whole place is rundown with no maintenance. This place has a history so visitors come here. The ticketing counter is atrocious as compared to such highly efficient methods elsewhere.

RAMNAGAR FORT

The Ramnagar Fort is a fortification in Ramnagar, Varanasi, India.
The sandstone structure was built in the Rajputana style in 1750 by Kashi Naresh Maharaja Balwant Singh. The current king and the resident of the fort is Anant Narayan Singh.

Of the numbert of forts and palaces we visited on our trip to India this was, without a doubt, the poorest of the lot. Whereas others were maintained by the Dept of Archaeology which does a great job, this is seeming owned privately by the current king.

Yes, there is a museum of sorts. The weapons are not bad, but the cars etc are not well maintained being covered in dust.

The buildings, almost without fail, seem to badly require maintenance; they all appear to have the wall colours fading and the materials wearing.

There is a large inner lawn, but visitors are not permitted to walk on it!

Even our Guide seemed a little embarrassed at the state of this palace.

A definate " give it a miss" if you have the option.

Ramnagar Fort is an incredible fort definitely worth visiting for foreign ir domestic tourist. It is well kept and a beautiful place to visit without tons of tourists. Right now the ghats are under water, so if you need a place to visit, take a sharing taxi up to Assi ghat and grab a rickshaw to Ramnagar over the bridge. Also tonight, the Ramleela plays will be in that location. Enjoy!
