Visit during periods of flooding of the Ganges, we could see the cremations very closely on a platform where a gentleman accompanied us with our Guide of the agency Voyage in India. It's a once in a lifetime thing.

Manikarnika Ghat is a fascinating ghat. On the holy Ganges river this is the most revered spot for a cremation in the hindu faith. The body of the deceased is carried down through the small alleys and placed in the Ganges for purification

I have come to Varanasi twice and each time I stay for hours in this place to attend the cremation ceremony. I cannot say what attracts me to this particular and macabre place, perhaps the great spirituality, the rituals and even if I am a woman, as a tourist I have always been allowed to stay, in fact, I even managed to go to a tower near where there is the sacred fire which is always kept lit to watch from above.
My advice is to avoid people who pretend to be guides and tell you that without them you can't enter, also because in the end they take you to someone in charge to extract money from you with the excuse of buying wood.

Famous Ghat of Varanasi. This is the Place where Cremation takes Place. Either you can visit this via In lanes or you can see this during Boat Ride.

My guide was explaining to me the various ghats as we passed them along.
This is where the dead are cremated, burning takes about 4 hours, using more than 300 kilos of woods. The ashes are thrown at the Ganges River for reincarnation reasons.
Initially, I was planning to get off the boat and walk around this area. Last minute, I changed my mind , felling like I was “tresspassing” this place. Said a silent prayer for the dead here.

Absolutely amazing. Not for the squeamish as this is very, very real. Bring a mask (though you'll still be breathing everybody in).
A firm, repeated, polite 'no thank you' to those that approach saying they are volunteers at the hospice or ghat worked for us.

Varinasi is the most amazing ancient city. There's many wonderful Ghats (the steps leading down to the Ganges), though this one is one of the most memorable.
See the bodies being bought continually down to the river, dipped then laid onto a funeral pyre and set alight from the feet, slowly buring over the next couple of hours to take the whole body. Usually you can hear the load bank of the stomach or the head exploding; however all this happens with a sense of total calmness and organisation with no tears and most usually no smell of a summer BBQ anywhere around the area.
Brings death to mind and the importance of enjoying the short time we have

Mythical place out of time. The stretchers carrying the dead follow one another at high speed, 100 creations minimum per day. No women, only men. A whole ritual for each cremation. No unpleasant smell.

Many adjectives could be used for this place.
We arrived there in the evening from the old city behind it, with porters who three times with corpses on their shoulders covered by a cloth made us move with their screams.
Once we arrived we saw the pyres with the corpses, the family members, the people watching and everything was even more accentuated by the fact that since it was evening the fires stood out even more.
The worst thing however was the smell of burnt corpses which at a certain point reached us on the wind....

Which is the most clean ghat in kashiVishwanath (Varanasi) to take bath?
Skrevet 25. november 2018
I would pass on swimming in the Ganges....There is no such thing as a clean Ghat as all the Ghats are by the Ganges which is so polluted unfortunately.
Skrevet 3. desember 2018
At the kashiVishwanath temple is it allowed to pour water over the shivling?
Skrevet 1. november 2018
Yes you are allowed to pour water on the shivling
But for pouring milk they have fixed timing
Skrevet 2. november 2018
Is Manikarnika ghat clean to have a bath in Ganga river
Skrevet 30. oktober 2018
No do not even dream of it but you can keep both your feet under water take a hand full of water and sprinkle it on your head. It has the same effect.
Skrevet 3. november 2018
Hi Manika,
Please confirm if the boat ride is allowed, as i have planned on August 17th to August 21st to Varanasi.
Skrevet 10. august 2016

Wish you all the best for other months in VARANASI when you can see the ARTI of MA GANGA and wherever you stay here in VARANASI,all will guide you properly.Thank you with regards.
