The Manikarnika ghat is just next to the Kashi Vishwanath corridor. Bodies are burnt there 24/7 and there is an eternal flame. There is a belief that if you die in Kashi and get your remains thrown into the Ganga, you will not be reborn. Hence many people believe it’s very auspicious to die in Varanasi. It’s a very sad sight to see.

The river is really high at the moment so there is only a small area for the cremations.
It took me an hour to find this place on the crazy busy road and then I was hassled by two men telling me BS stories trying to get me to make a 'donation'. Fortunately I've been in India for a while and recognise scams.
The place is hot, dirty, busy, smoky and all together unpleasant. Bodies come regularly to be cremated and that's about it. I didn't feel safe there as a solo female.
There are other ghats where you can observe this funeral process that is less busy. Ask the locals. I would not recommend this ghat.

Manikarnika ghat is an experience. Seeing the burning pyres brings you the detachment. Just there you see temples, making you thoughtful of how life and death are so close to one another. The temples are ancient. There is also an ancient Durga temple above, but I don't know whether pooja is done regularly.
Going to the ghat from the road is not convenient. If possible go from another ghat by boat and leave on the same boat.

Don't go alone as a foreigner, specially females. Place is filled with scammers. They spot you soon, get you before entrying the ghat and "pass" you to a second one. The second serves you as a "guide" who "won't lie to you in a sacred place", but manipulates you while wanting a set donation, a set amount of money for the homeless. If you give less, they do emotional blackemail and say you "don't need to give that", meaning, it is not enough money for donation. Males are intimidating there. Prefere Harishchandra ghat.

We went to Manikarnika Ghat this morning, arriving there many scammers approached us. One of them started explaining that we should follow him in order to have access to the ghat and make a donation to homeless people. We didn’t not accept , told him we didn’t want to follow him and he started aggressively arguing that we didn’t want to learn about Indian culture.
We left him, tried to go to the ghat on our own when other aggressive scammers started shouting at us that we were not allowed to go there without making a donation. We didn’t not insist , we left and we went to another ghat much less crowded where nobody asked us anything.
My advice , NEVER GO to Manikarnika Ghat and find another Cremation ghat if you want to experience the culture on your own.

A very interesting place with very dangerous people "attending" the place. This a sacred place were funerals take place, the use a holy fore that according to myth is the same fire Lord Shiva use to cremate his wife, since that day the caretakers mantain the fore for ritual purposes generation after generation. This was explained by one of the caretakers and he showed us the funeral rituals and the burning of the bodies and the process which was good. But when he asked for money for wood the caretaker just ask for more and for us even was agressive, he tried to take the money out of my bag, yelled us, threatened saying that it would be bad karma. We felt really vulnerable and violated. So it's a good place to know but just be very careful. Pictures are not allowed inside.

Manikarnika Ghat is the place where Hindus believe cremation of a dead body ensures moksh for the dead and it is said daily hundreds of dead bodies from all over the country are cremated 24 hours without any lull period in between. There is a temple besides the ghat which is leaning on a side, said to be much more than the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. However in the present era, Government and officials should consider installing electric crematorium and encourage cremation through the same to avoid environmental pollution.

Built to accommodate the crush of pilgrims at the nearby Shiva temples, it’s an impressive accomplishment. Near the main cremation site on the river, and by a pipe dumping treated sewerage into the river, it’s worth a stroll. Hundreds of old houses were razed to build it. Which is sad.

очень ритуальное место,гдк круглые сутки горят костры...близко подойти нельзя,но мы утром встречая восход солнца на лодочке очень близко подплыли к священному месту-до сих пор трепет и мурашки от увиденного.

I would pass on swimming in the Ganges....There is no such thing as a clean Ghat as all the Ghats are by the Ganges which is so polluted unfortunately.
