Seldom do you find a tour designed and guided by someone as passionate, articulate and knowledgeable as Graeme. The Old Surabaya tour covered all the bases - lovely Dutch colonial architecture, friendly Javanese kampoeng, bustling Chinatown and market, serene Arab quarter, and lunch at the delightful Ria Restaurant. The Madura day tour explored the Bangkalan area. It was cleverly put together to soak in the rustic charm of Madura - shrines, markets, viewpoints, mahogany forest, villages, and the remarkable limestone quarry. Lunch was at the excellent Tera Bulan, once patronized by the President. Saw and experienced so much, it seemed like 4 or 5 days.

Booked this Madura private day tour with Graeme who had it tailored for me.
Visited a traditional market, a local village, a royal cemetery and limestone complex. Break away from the usual tourist routes and discover Indonesia’s latest gem when you visit Madura Island!. It was a fantastic and informative . So impressed with Graeme's knowledge of the local history and Madura itself.
We had a terrific late lunch before heading back to Surabaya. So glad I did this tour and will definitely do it again next year but this time an extended trip to the other side of Madura island . Thanks Graeme ! I had a wonderful day and it was nice to know you.xxx

I found Graeme as I was looking around for a competent knowledgeable Guide. It's a private escorted tour and it's a delight to have a conversation with Graeme thru'out the day. I took the Bromo trip (its a 7am-7pm tour) as the description of the tour was very attractive - I got to visit a local home, drive an alternative scenic route (to see Mt. Bromo at another angle), and the best part was visiting a local wet market...boy! The first time I saw tobacco being sold in bulk, and a bull's head (chopped off!).
Grame has lived in Indonesia longer than I have - you can ask him any questions...the insiders' interesting ones! I got to learn quite a bit of a few gems about my own country, and on the way home to my hotel - we got to talk about Morocco and he has a wealth fo knowledge to share with me should I plan to go there 1 day. Graeme is an avid traveler, his knowledge extends beyond Indonesia. And did I tell you he also prepares a bunch of snacks in his car? I love that knowing that we'll be hungry along the way. Â

My wife and I wanted to get a better understanding of the history of Surabaya and its historical sites. Since we had no idea where to start we booked the "old Surabaya tour" with Graeme. We hoped that he could help us to get to know the city better in an accessible way. For most people Surabaya appears to have very little to offer but we found the opposite to be true. In fact, we were quite surprised about the vast quantity of sites and buildings of the past you can still find, feel, see and even touch. Thanks to Greame his excellent knowledge about the city, his pleasant storytelling and ways of getting access to really unusual places, we got an amazing introduction into the city's history that we will never forget. We can definitely recommend to book one of his tours. Be ready to be inspired.

Surabaya is not a city on the bucket list of many travelers, but if you find yourself passing through or working here, then this tour is a must. Graeme has in depth knowledge that comes from three decades living in Surabaya. His knowledge of the people and cultures of Surabaya is outstanding and you will get to meet many locals on this trip. It combines history, culture, markets, the port, and local neighborhoods including Chinatown and the Arab quarter. At the end I had a deeper appreciation for the city that will be my home for a few years.

My wife and I spent two days with Graham on two one-day themed excursions. The two days were quite unique, covering attractions in rural Java on one day and in center city Surabaya on the other. Graham's familiarity with, knowledge of, and love for his topics are generous, genuine and infectious. We came away feeling both educated and enriched from the experiences that Graham shared. Also, Graham was intent on ensuring that we had a full experience during our two days rather than watching the clock. While some may say that there is not much to do in Surabaya and East Java, we suggest that with Graham, you will not have enough time in the day to cover all that you will find to be of interest. We will be pleased to go with Graham on another tour.

Graeme customized a half-day "old Surabaya city tour" for two of us in January. Not only was Graeme very knowledgeable about Surabaya and Indonesia, but I appreciated the fact that the tour could be customized to half a day instead of a full day. All logistics - including driver, vehicle, drinking water, meeting point, and all stops all the way for thoughtfully planned with the customer in mind. Even the level of details offered during the tour were adjusted to accommodate both the interest level and knowledge of the group. If you visit Surabaya, consider Graeme's tour first for the professionalism and expertise in Indonesian history and culture.

I arranged two trips with Graeme, the Mt Bromo tour and the East Java Discovery tour. Both were excellent. Prior to travelling to Surabaya, Graeme had also been helpful with suggestions that ensure my time there was optimised.
The Bromo tour is a full day tour but quite different from the standard Bromo offerings. Starting at 7 am from Surabaya (unlike the 4am standard tour start) Graeme takes a different routing to Bromo which is extremely scenic, a windy quiet road with spectacular views of the steep farming terraces that align the foothills. After a 2.5 hr drive you switch to a jeep for the last 45 minutes drive to viewing points from the outer caldera then the descent to the sea of sands and the inner caldera. Again views are spectacular and atmospheric due to mist, clouds and Mt Bromos discharges. The route taken by Graeme is quite quiet compared to the standard route which apparently on occasions can comprise hundreds of jeeps that access the Crater from a different direction. This together with the later timing make this tour significantly more peaceful than the norm.
The last stage involves a horse ride across the sands and up to the 200 step staircase that takes you up to the inner caldera and the Mt Bromo crater. The rim itself is quite thin which although there is a fence in parts requires a lot of care particularly during periods of whiteout from the crater and the frequent sulphur discharges. A few tourists are lost every year so basic common sense override is required when on the rim.. A mask or other covering is also highly recommended.... the whole experience however is fantastic and highly recommended. The sounds from the crater are very impressive. The last stop on route back to Surabaya apart from lunch is a walk around a local village that Graeme has known for 30 odd years. This is an opportunity to understand a little more about the history and culture of Indonesia and benefit from Graeme’s detailed understanding of Indonesia.
The East Java Discovery is also fun, but very different being an eclectic mix of differing experiences over the course of the day offering some great photo opportunities.... first stop is a brief stop to admire the 14th century funeral temple of Candi Jawi which is in process of obtaining UNESCO status. Next is a visit around the botanic gardens, a chance for a walk in their extensive grounds before heading to Wonosari Tea estate for a walk around the estate, a factory visit and a chance to sample their excellent premium tea. The star here however is the location the estate being nestled as it is in the foothills as well as being immaculately maintained. From here it is a short drive to Taman Safari, a drive through Zoo. This was for me a revelation as my expectations had not been high. However ensure your camera is ready as both the drive up through the rice terraces as well as the drive through the park offer a number of great photo opportunities..... The various enclosures are extensive and the animals appear well looked after. You will have opportunity for close encounters with the big 5 as well as a wide range of other exotic animals.
The last stop for lunch and a walk at Kaliandra is eye popping. This is a huge development by the son of one of Indonesia’s richest families which has at its heart Villa Leduk, a massive Palladian mansion heavily influenced by some of the great European estates complete with deer and peacocks in the garden. It is surrounded by some great examples of traditional Javanese architecture, the latter including villas for rent and the lovely restaurant featuring the organic produce grown on the estate. The main villa is beautifully decorated and full of an interesting mix of European bronzes & Hindu stone gods juxtaposed together. It is very hard to believe this is in the heart of East Java. Again a great fun full day out and highly recommended....

We did a day trip to Mt Bromo with Graeme...it was awesome!
Graeme came to our house with a driver at 7am. Equipped with drinks and snacks, we set off on the full day tour. The two hour drive was interesting, beautiful and relaxing. As we got closer to the mountain, the scenery got even more stunning. We had a few stops along the way, it was nice to get out of the car to see the landscape and take some photos.
Once we got to the village, Graeme had everything arranged for the 4 x 4 driver, horses and entrance passes. We arrived mid-morning and had a perfect view of the volcano and the surrounding area. It was stunning!
On the drive back to Surabaya, we stopped at a local restaurant for a delicious meal and drinks. This is all included in the tour payment, so it's a very reasonable rate.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend anyone wanting to explore Surabaya, Java or Indonesia to go with Graeme. He has a wealth of information, good sense of humour and great value for money.

Fantastic tour of Old Surabaya. Our first introduction to the city, with our group consisting of 2 new residents and 2 travelling from Australia. The day was well organised and jam packed with interesting locations and experiences. Graeme is a true professional, extremely knowledgable about Surabaya and committed to giving guests a great experience. I am sure that many people who have lived in Surabaya a long time will have not been to the parts of the city we explored. Can't wait to do more tours with him!
