The mighty and gigantic fleet of vessels navigated by Admiral Cheng Ho would have been barred from entering Indonesian waters if he still survived today. South China Sea has been a contentious point of conflict over territorial claims. Lately, the Indonesian navy was not happy over Chinese fishing vessels fishing at her territorial waters near the Natura Islands.
Just imagine if in today context, it would not be so welcoming if the Indonesian navy sighted a convoy of vessels navigated by Admiral Cheng Ho traversing into the waters of the Riau Archipelago. Definitely, the landing would not be that friendly and smooth which happened in the old days.
Nevertheless, Ming China has no ambition to colonize any country. The expedition appeared to be diplomatic visit and Admiral Cheng Ho even converted himself to be a Muslim and married a Muslim girl when he was in Melaka.
This Cheng Ho Mosque resembles a Chinese Temple. Few years back, I had visited also another mosque which was constructed like a Chinese temple in Rautau Panjang in Kelantan but this one at Bengkong was radiantly red and from the facade one could not differentiate it from a Chinese temple.
The mosque was closed when we arrived. The tour guide asked if any of us want to alight to see but no one responded and the driver left hurriedly and brought us to the next attraction which is the Batam Layer Cake Shop. I was a bit of disappointed not able to see the mosque more closely.
Unlike the European colonialists who built churches in every country they conquered, Admiral Cheng Ho did not construct this mosque so it was not a historical artifact or a century original mosque. This mosque is constructed recently with the purpose of attracting Chinese tourists. Nothing extraordinary. The number of Chinese tourists that arrived in Indonesia has exceeded millions and such historical and cultural linkage helps to connect the tourists to this foreign country.
The mosque is located within the Golden City of Bengkong. The Golden City of Bengkong attempts to provide a one-stop service for tourists. As such, you have the Batam Layer Cake factory, the Mosque, the Miniature Park, the Golden Prawn Seafood Restaurant, the Gold Kart circuit, the Golden View Hotel, the Balinese cultural dance center and the shopping areas all within a short distance for tourists to patronize without having to travel far.
Nice place, nice attractions.

The exterior of the temple is beautiful... But that is it... Just taking photos outside.. Can't go in... Come, if u happened to pass by this road... No need to purposely come.

This is an interesting mosque, dedicated to the legend Chinese Muslim Admiral Cheng Ho or ZhengHe as we Chinese named him.
Please come dressed respectfully, there are Muslim praying inside and it is still a functioning mosque, and do keep your voices low.
Take photo outside only, please do not take photo of people praying, it is rude and disrespectful.
