Why doesn't anyone talk about the garbage that litters the 27km route of this trek? Why doesn't anyone talk about the camps that look like toilets or the smell of urine and toilet paper littering the surroundings so you don't know where to go? Why doesn't anyone talk about the guides and porters who do a top job but who throw cigarette butts everywhere, or you have to make sure with the tours that they take the waste with them and not leave it behind? Sorry but this fabulous place will soon be doomed

The truth is that it is extremely sad and disappointing to see the amount of garbage and cigarette butts in the place. There's no point in going to see those spectacular views if next to you there are papers with poop and a lot of trash.
I honestly don't understand why the government or even the agencies that take tourists there don't do anything about it.
Another thing I didn't like is that there were TOO many people... it should be much more limited and charge more so that there is more control over waste and so that you don't feel like you are walking in an amusement park instead of the mountain...
Lastly, it bothers me a lot that people play their music on a speaker, making us all listen to the horrible things they play... that they use their headphones and let us enjoy the hike... if you are really a nature lover, I would look for another place in where they take care of it and it can be enjoyed.

The general level of rubbish within the park and at the crater rim campsite is completely unacceptable - the park authorities should be deeply ashamed of how this beautiful environment is being mismanaged and abused.

We hiked up to the summit via the Sembalun gate, litter and cigarette butts are visible all along the way (especially at the rest points) that has clearly accumulated over years, despite claims that the route is cleaned every 3 months. There is no waste management in place at all that we saw.

The campsite is filthy, you can see where hundreds of people have been to the toilet and not buried or even attempted to cover their waste - resulting in swarms of flies everywhere. There is litter, cigarette butts and plastic packaging strewn all around.

On the route to the summit people have taken dumps at multiple points along the paths. This level of litter and human waste poses risks to the local wildlife, flora and fauna as well as just being generally disgusting.

We planned to do a 3D2n trek and left after the 1st night due to the horrendous conditions.

Thousands of tourists trek here every year, bringing a lot of money into the park but it seems as if very little (if any of it) is used to take care of or preserve the environment. The park authorities clearly don't care about nature and it would seem they are just using it to generate income.

The summit is magnificent and a little difficult to reach (the last part is in scree of small lava stones, one step forward = 1/2 step back). The problem, for me crippling, is the camp (at 2600m) to access the summit: obviously on a reduced location, nothing, NOTHING, has been set up by the Park or the trekking agencies to circumcise the toilets. Suddenly, you sleep, you eat, you are constantly less than 10m, in all directions, from droppings and the toilet paper that goes with it: you are in a field of open toilets😥 difficult to accept, even having lived 6 months in India and 5 years in Indonesia. This completely ruins the trek.
And I'm not talking about the problem of plastics left on the site, a problem that we find a lot in Asia, Indonesia, Along Bay, etc.

Me and my girlfriend had a awesome experience with Dhyns Rinjani Hiking . Although it was the toughest trek I had ever done, both mentally and physically, it was one of the most exhilarating trekking of our life. Dhyns Rinjani Hiking arranged everything for us, including go to waterfall I wanted to do on arrival day , and pick up and drop off around Lombok. I had a superb guide who was constantly checking i had anything I needed and provided me with more than enough food and constant supply of coffee, cookies, and even cigarettes. The porter was also fantastic, cooking the nicest Mie goreng I had in all of Indonesia. Thank you for the wonderful experience that much exceeded my expectations

We climbed Rinjani 8 years ago and had great memories of our climbing adventure, so when we heard that rinjani is back open, but could only be booked by an app called e rinjani we were very excited to say the least.
This app only works for Andriod Phones which made a booking difficult to say the least, after securing an old phone and downloading the app i could finaly make a booking. At the moment they only allow one night 2 days with all this Covid Restrictions, which was not ideal but we still went for it.
We booked as Indonesians as me and my friend lived here more then 30 years and have our own KTP and KITAP, after organising our porters via a friend we are all set to go.
The day we arrived in Sembalun we checked into the Hotel next door to the National Park Office, since we wanted to start early the next day we thought we better check in the day before. We had to wait 2,5 hours until some officer finaly came, and thats there the trouble all started. Our Porters were already with us and ready to assist, but as soon as the officer saw as ,and we showed our booking he said it was not valid but will check with his boss. After a while he came back to us and said, because we are foreigners this booking is not valid and we have to book as tourists which is a 150 k a day compare to 5 k for Locals per day. Ok i thought this is a little dicriminating but still Ok as we really wanted to hike this beautiful mountain again. But after we agreed to pay the higher fee he then instisted that all foreigners have to book through a trekking organiser, which we did not need as we booked our own porters and had all our food and gear ready to go. On top of that he also demanded to get another local health certificate which was not mentioned anywhere in the app, we already had to do the covid test were the certifacte was provided according to the new regulations.
After about 10 minutes a trekking oraganizer arrived and the first thing he said was i can help you, but I am expensive 350 USD per person as mentioned on the internet, compare to not even one Dollar what locals would pay. Of course we did not go for his rip off, and left the office immediately. They have no business and all the locals are struggeling due to the earthquake and pandamic. It makes me sad and angry at the same time, sad for the locals as they would really need our salary to survive asit was only there second job all year according to them, and extremely angry at the officals of this nationalpark as they were not willing to help and interested to honor our booking as local residents. They are part of Unesco now, maybe they don t even want any hikers there anymore and they have enough funding already.
So as a foreigner even if you lived in Indonesia for over 30 years and pay your taxes and employee 130 staff, you will never ever be a local in there eyes. This authorties at the office are discriminating to say the least.
We spent our 3 days climbing some surrounding hills, and met some great local people and none of them could understand why we got denied to climb Rinjani. Its a shame because it is a beautiful place but can not be recommended anymore...........thanks for reading it all!

Don’t go in the rainy season! Some operators will still sell you the tour on the streets and say it’s possible, that this is a lie, but please don’t trust them. The weather is far too unpredictable and there are frequent landslides when there’s a lot of rainfall. Those operators just want to make money and unfortunately don’t care about your safety/ecological impact while the park is officially closed. Must be beautiful and amazing to visit in the dry season, though.

Avoid at all costs unless you want to camp on a rubbish tip - any ambience destroyed . Beware shoddy companies to inedible food and substandard camping gear .
