I have definitely enjoyed visiting this beach along with Gili Meno while doing the Gili Islands Tour. It is a bit of a shame that I didn't spend a bit more time on this island due to time constraints

Would never ever choose this destination again! Be very aware that if you're looking for peace and silence avoid this place by all means. It's virtually impossible to sleep due to rave beach parties running all night only to be reminded again to avoid this noise by 4:30 prayers. Ridiculous.

I would never have known these islands existed only for my son backpacking was advised to visit them and they didn't disappoint. Three small islands we chose gilli t island. Accessed by boat these little islands have no cars and you can tell the fresh air. Transport is bicycle and horse n cart. Short travel to any hotel or villa. These people cater to you re every need. It was beautiful. Sunlit walk down the little terrace to breakfast a nd a good breakfast it was or they deliver any meals to you re villa. If you are not put off by 10 minute dirt trek walk to beach it is well worth it. Definitely a place to get away from it all.

I visited Gili Air first-last time 6 years ago in 2017. The boat ride had been pretty awful, we were not prepared for the heat and midday sun, and were more of less verging on a heatstroke. We arrived during a powercut and the pool in our first accommodation wasn’t particularly cooling either. First meal I had wasn’t great and our accommodation ended up being directly next to the mosque speakers. I was ready to leave the next day, but decided to persevere given how long it had taken to get there. Luckily, it all turned around - we found a lovely beach bar and spent the next 2 days at turquoise sea and watching the sun set in to the sea. Loved it.

Decided to visit Gili again this year 2023, this time knowing what to expect. We’d booked a stay for our first night, which we knew was away from the speakers and we’d already seen in person. We were more prepared for the boat ride - lots of water and sun cream and whatever they tell you the time will be, it is more. Well, the boat didn’t take off for ages and there was no A/C inside the boat making us feel sick from the start. The whole thing was incredibly disorganised and when did then manage to make our way to the deck, we had some air, but also water - as in we got entirely soaked. They also insist playing really bad and loud music on these boats.

When we arrived, it immediately looked different. The news of the 2018 earthquake clearly hadn’t reached us. It just so happened that it had washed away really the only area that we knew and looked positively destroyed. Even though it was a Saturday night we barely saw a soul. We seemed to be the only people in our accommodation, which while decorated purposefully felt damp and tired. The next morning was cloudy and stormy, no turquoise skies or seas anywhere to be seen. There was a powercut smack in the middle of dinner time and all the streets we had to walk were pitch black for two hours. We opened these reviews, agreed wholeheartedly, and wanted to leave immediately.

We changed accommodations for the second night and the sun came out and wind eventually died down (admittedly, it was November monsoon season, but there’s definitely a difference between beginning of Nov and end). Suddenly, people were back on the streets and the island vibes were there once again. We found some Canggu type cafes that definitely weren’t there before and enjoyed the chill what-day-even-is-it vibes for 2 extra days, 5 total, which I felt was just about enough for us. Reason mostly being that it’s incredibly hot there and no restaurants have A/Cs so fried rice is not on my menu, but all the fresh food/non-seaside-extra-touristy places shut by about 7pm latest, and we just couldn’t deal with the dinner drama for longer than that.

Comparing the island then and now - there’s still dirt roads, though pavements have been installed in some bits. There’s still horses, more so than I remember, but no tourists use them. Bikes and electric scooters are now also a thing, which I did find annoying. Hotel prices seem to have dropped, food seems to have gone up a bit. There’s definitely more yoga people there. Also cats, en masse, which I do not remember from the first time. There’s still powercuts and hardly any street lighting.

Beaches - there are pockets here and there where you can go in just fine with no special shoes, but there are some corals in the sand for sure. Don’t dive or snorkel, so can’t comment on that.

If you’re looking for a 5-star all inclusive vibe, Gili isn’t for you. There’s no big resorts, you won’t be getting a coddled honeymoon vibe. You have to accept that this island is a bit rough on the edges and that you’re sharing your space with the working class locals, and that Indonesia as a whole is pretty poor (isn’t the cheap prices why you’re here?), so some on-street haggling is a part of the ‘charm’ I guess.

Between the 2018 earthquaken and then Covid, the island has definitely taken a hit and you’ll definitely find a ghost-resort here and there. Not sure why people say it’s dirty - other than the debris on the west side and questionable aehstetic choices in the local streets, the rest of the (touristy part of the) island is pretty clean. But if you’re looking for eternal summer and not worrying about Mondays then this will be your vibe.

Sorry to say that the Mosque is as annoying as it was 6 years ago.

Long time and frequent lover of this island. Forget the others, go inland away from the beach and you will find amazing local local local. A blessed almost spiritual place. ❤️❤️

This island is horrendous and abismal. It is like walking into a devastated village that still hasn’t been reached by civilization. It smells of burnt trash and is dusty, rural and just filthy. All the resorts seem to be abandoned, neglected and destroyed. The povery here is seen on every corner and not even the beaches justify the hype around Gili Air. The beach resorts are empty, the employees seem to be fed up and are damn right unpleasant, always trying to get more money out of you. The services and food are horrible and the prices for it are just absurd and inflated. We do not recommend a visit to the Gili’s. If you want to experience untouched nature and explore new places, this iskand will leave you disappointed and miserable you spent any time here at all. All the tourists seem unhappy and hate this place and rightly so. The locals are not very pleasant and seem more annoyed with the tourists than anything else.

Sadly the previous negative reviews from people about gili air over the years are ubiquitously true.

Noise: The inharminious ritual from the mosque is intolerable to those seeking a quiet romantic getway. I say this as one who otherwise enjoys the sound of prayer. The mosques (on each island) have megaphones. If you want to get some sleep at night, dont bother trying. Eg: 8pm-midnight: constant. And from 2am-4am constant. Then from around 630am. And throughout the morning and afternoon periodically.

The islands appeared to us to be mired in enduring poverty. For example -

Garbage: The roads / walkways are littered with piles of it, from normal rubbish to alternating concrete and metal scrapheaps. We walked the entire circumference of the island and cris-crossed the inside.

Beaches: if you came here thinking you will find a comparable BVI / Maldives, you won't discover such here. To varying degrees, all around the island, the beaches are unkempt, the sand is unspectacular, trash piles lie behind the trees. They are uninviting. Motorboats pollute every view, and the coastline with oil. There are fish and turtles (mantas no longer migrate here) in the sea, but much of the coral is dead. Be alert for the currents which are strong and potentially dangerous.

Dining: plentiful number of restaurants, and a couple of respectable ones foodwise. Unfortunately 95% of them have excessively loud bar music emanating from them. One after the other after the other, mainly on the south east and west sides. Not for discerning and / or romantic travellers.

Hotels: there are some half decent 3 star equiv hotels here (like L''Archipel) but the quality is distinctly average. Keep your expectations in check. Most buildings, of all types, here look like they were built (and not maintained) in the 1970s, even - oddly - those built more recently.

Hawkers: expect to be hassled continuously from the moment you step off the boat, to every shop and restaurant you pass. Ad libbing "no" is frightfully tedious.

So to those who seek paradise (and know from experience what that looks / feels like...), as well as privacy, quality, tranquillity etc....look elsewhere. The historic posts espousing these islands as "paradise" to quote a few are illjudged (perhaps innocently due to a lack of travel experience) or fake. These islands are more suited to single 20-somethings looking for the Ibiza of Bali.
