Difficult, 5 to 6 hours for 1300/1400m elevation gain
Hallasan National Park is the jewel of Jeju, and if you are a hiker, it is an absolute must. At 1,947 meters, Hallasan is the highest peak in South Korea, and the view from Baengnokdam Crater at the top is simply breathtaking. Two main trails lead you there: the Seongpanak Trail (9.6 km, about 5 hours climb, which I recommend for the climb because easier) and the Gwaneumsa Trail (8.7 km, about 5 to 6 hours climb), the latter being the most difficult with a steeper elevation gain (for the descent). Expect a good sweat, but the game is worth it.
It is better to attack early, and not to be afraid of the crowd (by the way, you have to book your Check-out slot online). The majority of the climb is in the undergrowth, without a view, and it is on the last 2 or 3 kilometers that you go beyond the rumbling of trees to have a view of the whole island. Beautiful, unavoidable, but the crowd spoils the fun of the experience "in kind". Physical and sporting feat still present

I am impressed. A very interesting experience. The mountains are wonderful, the nature is wonderful. I am thinking of coming again.

Visiting this mountain and its park easily helps you understand why Jeju Island is included among the "New 7 Wonders of Nature". It immerses you into the beauty of Nature and gives you that much needed respite from your busy daily schedule. There are many spots you can visit on this mountain. We joined a guided tour which took us to the famous "1100 Road" and wetland. We also saw the monument depicting the legendary white deer. Your tour guide should tell you the story behind it. The wooden trail that guides you through the wetland is amazing! It was, indeed, a very relaxing visit. Highly recommended!

It was very very good.
The hike is challenging and you definitely need some level of fitness and balance because there are many stones/rocks on the ground you need to walk/climb on and over.
It is a very well presented hike.
Took 4h35 to do and it was 19km for me.

A great if horrible hike! :)
We went up Gwaneumsa trail which is indeed challenging - esp. the last couple of kilometers that are very steep - but altogether in fact quite enjoyable! Facing a lot of rain reaching the top we then decided to go down the supposedly « easier » Seongpanak trail which right from the outset felt truly horrible! It is covered for kilometers on end with rocks (which under heavy rain end up being also rather treacherous) - only briefly interrupted with wooden planks that offer a welcome if very short lived relief. In hindsight we should have gone down the Gwaneumsa trail.
But in the end absolutely great memories! Would I do it again? Certainly not under the rain!

It was the best decision I made to visit Hallasan on December. The trail is easy and the snow spotted all the trail just cuase slippery but still negotiable so please prepare your hiking shoes. It was a good weather and I met amazing people all the hike. We rented a car during our stay in Jeju. And entrence for Hallasan is Free. You just need to pay 1000krw for parking. Definately will come back !

The largest volcano on Jeju is in Hallasan National Park. There are various hiking trails, but two of them have to be reserved in advance as there are capacity restrictions (a day in advance is too short). We then opted for the unrestricted Eorimok Trail - also a beautiful hike, 6.8 km one way, varied landscape.

We climbed in mid-March. Halfway through the journey, snow appeared, the entire road was covered in snow, it was very slippery. Take comfortable and non-slip shoes with you (ice shoes/ice shoes). I had summer rag sneakers, and they always rolled down all the way.
The whole journey took us 7 hours.

Following our arrival at the Yeongsil path, we parked at the lower end of the route and then hiked up for thirty minutes to reach the beginning point. Even though we were only a few days away from the height of the foliage, it was still quite fine in several areas. After that, we descended by way of the Eeorimok route. This section is more peaceful and monotonous, yet it presents a new challenge in the volcanic stone sections.

With its crater (Baeknokdam) rising to 1,950m (the highest point in the country), Hallasan Volcano casts its shadow over 360 so-called secondary volcanoes, which, along with tens of kilometers of lava tunnels, caves and curious coastal mineral formations, have been declared a World Heritage Site UNESCO. About 2,000 plant species grow on its slopes and valleys. A geological and plant spectacle that can only delight tourists with each change of season.

I'm planning to climb to hallasan through seongpanak trail and exit by gwaneumsa. However the reservation guide only states that the only way to go going down by dongneung peak. Is it a must to go down through that trail? Also, as i'm going to use seongpanak + gwaneumsa combo, do i need to reserve for both trails? Thank you in advance.

Check out visit jeju website and jeju national park website. Both have pretty useful information. I only did the longer trail to the peak, cannot advise for other trails.
Visit jeju website has a live chat too.

Hi... in January 2020 I want to take a short trip to Jeju Island.
I arrived at Jeju Island Airport at 8 a.m.
I want to go to Hallasan Mountain and Ichullbong Peak in one day ... could I do it by bus? ...
Can anyone help me with the bus route and how?
thank you
Skrevet 23. desember 2019
Hi..ichullbong peak is best done early morning. Its in a town called seongsan ,there are local buses that go to seongsan, but its advisable that you sleep over the night before and go for the sunrise walk up.
For MtHallassan ,there are buses from jeju city or even seongsan via swegwipo, depending on which trek u d like to take depending on ur time...its recommended that you do these two things over 2 days...treks are from 8 hrs to 4 hrs routes.

Hi i would be in jeju with my family dec 29-jan 5. And one in our list is the hallasan mountain. Can i arrange tour once we arrived? Thank you.
Skrevet 10. desember 2019
Hi Leanne. I am sure the hotel will be able to arrange that for you. Just note that public transport is not very assessable. Taxi with driver to the place and for the day costs around S$200 (Singapore dollars). For this price, we rented a car instead so that we can drive wherever we want. The roads in Jeju is an easy drive except for the speed limit and GPS is up-to-date.

Hi,
Im planning to hike using Eoseungsaengak Trail which I believe starting point at Eorimok Trail.
1- May I know what time nearest carpark will be open? Im planning to start at 7.30AM.
Skrevet 4. november 2019
Hi all, is it certainly snow around 15th December or later at Hallasan peak? Do I need to train hiking? Thank you
Skrevet 4. november 2019
Jeju does snow in winter but will there be snow in December no one can tell you that till you are few days before that.
If you are not a regular exercising person and only plan to start training now, I would say it is rather late when the hike to the peak is to happen on 15 December. Probably you may want to consider doing a less taxing route but not to the peak.
