Visited during a family tour of Sri Lanka with a total of 7 families; 28 people. Short visit. Very nice church. Worth it during a short stop.

Of course, I should have known, the Portuguese were here some centuries ago, but I was surprised by the large Catholic faith community in this part of Sri Lanka. And that in predominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka. By Catholic standards, it is a sober church. The men at the entrance ask for a little ‘parking fee’ afterwards.

On the Grand Street, is located the edifice called the St. Mary's Church. It is a thrilling building with grey – peach walls and black – white marble elements. When I visited, a wedding mass was in progress; so, I did not go inside.
But, standing at the door, listening to the wedding carols, I took in the beautiful interiors.

Majestic Church
Negombo has been influenced greatly by the Christian faith from the time it was occupied by the Portuguese. It is often called "Little Rome" in view of the large number of churches in the city.[4]
Construction of the church was started in 1874 and completed, after a long gap, in 1922.[1] The art and architecture of this church and a few similar other churches in Sri Lanka demonstrate the cultural amalgamation of the European practice with Sri Lankan art and architecture during the early years of the 20th century.[5]

В 874 году началось строительство грандиозного собора Св. Марии. Здание, в архитектуре которого преобладает неоклассический стиль, строилось более 40 лет и открылось только в 1922 году. Фасад церкви декорирован классическими белыми колоннами, лепниной и перилами в колониальном стиле.

A beautiful Church in an area with a multitude of Churches & Religious statuary on public display. Our guide said that Christians only make up a small percentage of the SL Population but this area is a mini Vatican City !! It was a school day so we kept it low key but worth a quick visit !
