Hard to assess, you help them or make them continue a custom that causes back problems. They are not Thai citizens, the state does not give them nationality and they live on tourism. They're far north and nobody would visit them. We've gone and you're impressed by Karen who has the most rings even leg joints. There are little girls but we think it's a necklace. And adults tb with rings but wider and less long. We have been respectful asking permission and paying by buying crafts. There are many children. We bought them bag potatoes from the village shop and they were delighted. Boys and girls. If you can bring them paintings or coloring of Spain. I would have liked to. It's hard. We do not want to contribute to malpractice but we want to help and live the country

It is demeaning! How to tolerate this again in 2024! Women parked like animals, children put forward on Sundays, sitting in a chair next to the weaving mom. The little girls offer you a photo, the accessories are ready! You can put time for a photo in the shoes of these women. How can this human zoo still exist? Do not go, there is much better to do and it is a citizen act not to condone the existence of this camp!

It is not a village but a set of flea market houses staffed by these women. The older ones do have those long and narrow necks, but they are getting wider and shorter (which I am glad). They take advantage of this cultural fact to make a living.
Girls smile at you as soon as they see you to take pictures and buy from them. It's total child exploitation... and a theatre based on his previous ways.

We really enjoyed our visit. Yes it costs to get in but tourism is their major source of income and I did not mind contributing to that. If you look beyond the market you can see their village and lifestyle and the day we visited it was 40 degrees and they rely on fans to keep cool. They produce beautiful wares and weave and embroider and the scarf I purchased took 3 days to weave. The ladies I spoke with were gentle and although our communication was limited, I appreciated the opportunity to gain a little insight of their community.

I went with a tour, we arrived early and the good thing was that there were no more tourists. The experience was very nice, the women and girls were very loving. They charge an entrance fee of 300 Bath per person, it is more than any temple, I wish the money went to the tribe but it seems to me that is not the case. You have to buy ready-made crafts, looms, necklaces, rings, etc.

I visited as part of a tour group and had reservations. I understood that the Karen people were refugees and were also restricted by what they could do. It was only on the basis that the entry fee was helping to support the Karen community that I had agreed to part with 300 baht to enter the village. That was more than the entrance fee for everything else I visited that day.
The place really felt like a human zoo. I was saddened by the conditions of the villagers. We walked around the village and saw that life was nothing more than selling souvenirs to tourists. I learned very little about the people or their lives in the camp. Some of the others on the tour treat the whole place and the people as one big joke. After 10 minutes, everyone was given 30 minutes to get their photos and whatever. I took this opportunity to go back to the van and sit out the embarrassing entertainment.
I’m only giving the review one extra star on faith that the entry fee is going to the Karen.

After paying an entrance fee of 500 baht per person, you will be treated to a mix of a market (with authentic products but also Chinese brol) and a human zoo. I hope the money left there helps the tribe survive.

This was the strangest experience. You enter through a theme park style entrance and have to pay 300bh (300!!!) each to enter the ‘villages’ which are nothing short of a big shopping street where the same items are being sold by every vendor, asking you to ‘buy buy’! The items aren’t cheap either and had we not been fleeced by the entrance fee and had more money left we might have liked to buy something. There are signs everywhere asking you to donate to support the villagers but we wonder where the huge entry fee is going…. It was the most we have paid anywhere to enter in south east Asia in over a month and not worth it.
The site is badly signposted so at one point we were lost walking through the woods and had to try to find our way back.
Eventually after walking through a series of different dusty villages you come to the long awaited long necked Karen tribe. Who, we wanted to see and interact with and see how they lived their lives as the blurb said, when in fact they were all sitting behind what looked like ‘staged looms’ again all selling the same type of items being sold all over.
This is in our opinion a very poor experience and they should make a maximum entry fee of 100bh that would I believe encourage more visitors to spend on the trinkets they are selling.

Don't go... It's a circus, it's not worth it 😢... it's not a community in its daily life, it's just a stage for visitors......

I agree with most of the opinions.
It’s a human zoo, commercial slavery. The Karens are locked inside. Each of them has a stand to sell Chinese items.
We left straight away because we were so uncomfortable!

Hi!
How did you get there on your own? Did you take a private driver until a specific point and then walked?
Thanks a lot in advance!

As i was living with the Karen people last september in Chaing Rai, I advise you to contact Elephant Peace Project, is an association ruled by Karen people, true Karen (the long neck women called Karen are not really the same tribe) Dada, the manager, is a wonderful person, and will guide you through the villages to meet the Karen and tell you about their traditions, the clothing, the love for nature, the link to elephants, etc. You can visit the villages and the jungle, feed their elephants, etc. And it would ne an ethical experience. She can inform you abot another tribes such as Akkha, Lahun, etc.

White palace is fascinating. The long neck village is also fascinating. It's a bit voyueristic and touristy but a great way to see a culture that is vanishing. You should be able to get there in your own but be sure you go when they are open to visitors.
