Herodot of Halikarnassos in 490–425 BC gave the earliest information about the castle of Marmaris, built on the peninsula in a secluded location. Herodot Castle 3. It says it was in. 1 7. A century-old Traveler mentions that the castle was built during the Rhodes expedition in 1522 and used as a military base under the order of Sultan Suleyman at the famous Trip-Name of Evliya Çelebi. It also mentions 40-foot-long, ancient stone blocks, remains of a ⁇ 2,000-year-old fortress that is still visible and belongs to the Hellenistic period. Today’s building book belongs to the castle, built during the Ottoman era, and remains locally.

OSMANLI KALESİNDEKİ MÜZE

The castle serves as a Museum since 1991 when the restoration was completed, featuring residences from the pre-republic period until 1981. The castle’s four indoor premises and courtyard showcase archaic, classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Eastern Roman and Ottoman collections from the Tuncian era. The ancient town of Knidos, located in Datça, within the area of the Museum’s management, offers visitors history when displaying artifacts from the excavations of the Burgas and Emecik Apollon sacred site, as well as rare artifacts brought to the Museum’s collection in different ways. In the museum’s garden, altars, columns, and column headings are on display, as are the tombstones, balls, and roses of the Ottoman era, and an important group of artifacts are the underwater amphores and vessels.

HAZIR GELMİŞKEN

A “zen” landscape in Marmaris is called “Jinan Garden.” This garden is Asian-style, featuring a chateau-like pagoda and pool arrangements. Named after Marmaris’ sister city of Jinan in Shandong, China, this garden is dedicated to the friendship between the two countries. There''s also a restaurant in the garden. Just below the Marmaris Castle, Kervansaray, built for the mother of the Kanuni Sultan Süleyman of the same period, Hafsa Sultan, the Rocky Rock of Goodness, found in the city as an archaeological park, Nimara Cave on Adaköy Paradise Island, orange Quarter, are other historic sites and sites that visitors can visit.

Not the most expansive museum, but well worth the visit.

Costs about £5 and you can easily spend a couple of hours here. Great views across Marmaris and the bay, probably worth it just for the photos.

Great value visit to learn a bit of local history and for the views and photo opportunities.

A beautiful site with stunning views around to the marina and out to sea. Informative displays and good selection of artefacts, jewellery, pots and amphorae. Toilet on site (free). Lovely planting within the castle too which made the whole thing even more scenic. Spent an enjoyable hour or so here.
Note: We visited after reading about it in The Times where they got the pricing wildly wrong (as in,'this costs pennies')! Entrance fee was €6 each I think, which is probably fair as it is a well maintained historical/archaeological site.

A small castle on a hill overlooking the city, very close to the port of Marmaris. You can reach it in a short time by going uphill through narrow streets. Museumcard is valid. Free for students, civil servants, over 65 years of age. There is a cute museum inside. If you go to the top, the view from the towers is magnificent. If you go to Marmaris, it is definitely a must-visit location.

The castle is very well restored and very interesting. The museum is part of the castle itself and has a wide selection of Amphorae and other artefacts. The views from the ramparts are beautiful and it was a very good experience.
On the climb up to the castle there are a couple of really nice cafes. Try the Turkish coffee!

A castle with a beautiful view. The museum card is passing by. Walk along the beach from the small Ataturk statue overlooking the sea, right in the corner, and reach the castle. A small castle right in the corner overlooking the sea. With a view. Sympathetic.

Well so unexpected, after a short up hill walk, at the top of the Castle you will find a small bar/cafe. It's run by an old couple. The views across the harbour are nice, the drinks are cheap and the owners are lovely. We'll worth a look.

Going up some rather uneven old steps, on a very hot day! You are rewarded with seeing the beautiful stonework of the castle. There is a small admission fee, but worthwhile to see some artifacts and the most wonderful breathtaking panoramic views of Marmaris.

After The Knights of St. John were thrown out of the Kingdom of Jerusalem with the fall of Acre in 1291, they moved to the Kingdom of Cyprus, only to be thrown out again in 1305, homeless they laid siege for four years to the Island fortress of Rhodes. Making it their home in 1309, along with the surrounding tributaries, including the port of Marmaris, where they built a protective castle until it fell, along with Rhodes, to the Ottoman Empire in 1522.
Suleyman the Magnificent forces rebuilt the castle from scratch after its defeat to accommodate a larger garrison, at the same time, a small Ottoman caravanserai was built by Suleyman’s mother close by in the bazaar.
The safe harbour below the castle was used in 1798 by Britain's Admiral Nelson to assemble his fleet before setting sail for Egypt and the Battle of the Nile, which ended Napoleon's ambitions in the Mediterranean. In 1801 the British were back with 120 ships and 14,000 troops, this time to end the French campaign in Egypt and Syria.
In 1957 two earthquakes almost destroyed the city. Only the castle and the historic buildings surrounding it were left undamaged. So the Turkish Ministry of Culture started renovating the castle in 1979, converting it into a museum with seven galleries, the largest used as an exhibition hall. The courtyard is full of seasonal flowers.

TIP: As the castle commands a great view of the harbour below, its worth the walk over cobblestones for sunset photos.
