It was a cold night in February, but it was great to see the scenery with the silhouette and real thing reflected in the moat without the wind. This is not how it works when the water shakes. The next morning we went back and found the moat partly covered with thin ice. Wear warm clothes when you watch.

It was the first time I had heard of it. I watched the projection mapping from a distance at night, and it was so good to see it on the premises the next day at noon! Cool. We didn't get in there in time, but we're glad we did!

Castle Masatsumoto (The Raven) dating from 1504 has been very well preserved, it is one of the few in Japan that has never been rebuilt. Nicknamed ''The Raven'' because of its black color, it teaches about the lives of samurai and their families.

Beautiful castle in the middle of the city. Easily accessible by walking from any hotel near the train station. Stairs inside are VERY steep and can only be traversed by able bodied people. No shoes allowed inside, make sure you wear socks.
Loved the Illumination of the castle. I hope it’s available all year round. Truly breathtaking.

We visited the park and the castle on December 6th. The park is free to enter. To enter the castle you need an entrance ticket. Inside the castle, steep stairs lead past an exhibition of armor and weapons from the Sengoku period. Here and there actors walk around in ninja outfits. They are happy to take pictures with you.

The black castle on a stopover from Tokyo to Kanazawa. More than worth it. Beautiful domain to walk around. But also beautiful to see inside. It can be very busy on the narrow steep steps inside. But otherwise definitely worth it.

The castle of Matsumoto and its surroundings are impressive. For a small price you can visit its interior. Impressive are the wooden stairs that have a slope of about sixty degrees.

We enjoyed the visit with a very friendly and informed FREE tour guide. No need to pay for a tour guide with transportation. The castle is a short walking distance from train station. Beware of stairs inside the castle. Not recommended if you have knee or hip problems.

About 3 hrs from Tokyo terminal by rapid train, and 15 min from Matsumoto station by walk. If you want to sightseeing inside of Matsumoto castle, it take about 2 hrs.

Do you need to buy bullet train tickets to Matsumoto from Nagano in advance? Or you can just buy in person in Nagano station on the day itself?
Skrevet 10. september 2019
I don’t know to be honest. We bought a 7-day Japan Rail pass to use throughout our trip because it was less expensive and very convenient. We bought that before we left and then picked up the vouchers/tickets at the airport when we arrived. We also purchased/upgraded our tickets for the bullet trains to the reserved Green Cars (first class) - none of the Green Cars we were on were full - there were plenty of seats.

Is there a tour package i can get - one day trip from Tokyo to Matsumoto castle with English speaking driver?
Skrevet 12. juni 2019
It will take you longer than one day from Tokyo to Matsumoto castle. When you get there you don't need a guide for the castle.
You would be better to take an organised tour of Japan that includes the castle. Or if you want to do it yourself, catch the train to Matsumoto and check into a hotel.
You are not going to do Tokyo to Matsumoto and back to Tokyo in one day.

Do you need to get tickets in advance or can you just go to the castle?
Skrevet 12. desember 2017
We got our tickets at the gate. I was there in Mid November and the castle was not full. Since you need to take your shoes off before entering the castle, make sure you have warm socks. The wooden floor can be cold.

Hi just wondering if there are many many people if you go around 2pm? I would hate it if i was the only one there in the afternoon
What time does the special people in samurai uniforms appear?
thanks a lot
Skrevet 23. november 2017
Maybe its because we went in February, but we got there at 10am ( they open at 8:30) and there were only a few other people. There was a tour group that was coming in right after us, however.

They’re ‘shachi’, a mythical creature with the head of a dragon and the body of a carp. It was believed that this animal brings rain, so temples and castles were given these additions to protect them from fire.

Hi! I plan on visiting Matsumoto from Yudanaka, does anyone know whether the JR lines from Yudanaka to Matsumoto are covered by JR East?
Skrevet 23. oktober 2017
Hello, in fact I travelled with JR East Azusa train from Tokyo Shinjuku to Matsumoto. Just check the JR website, they are really precise and clear

Is it worth to go in? or just take photo from outside?
Skrevet 12. oktober 2017
It seems to me if you travel all the way from Australia to Matsumoto Castle you should go inside. The stair climb will be a good workout for you.

I have two nights to spend in Matsumoto (coming from Shinjuku) before heading to Kinosaki Onsen and Amanohashidate. How accessible are the tourist areas (eg Norikura Kogen, easy hiking trails) from Matsumoto. Will be visiting 28th September. Any recommendations?
Is it better to head to Kinosaki Onsen or Amanohasidate from Matsumoto? Trying to figure out the shortest travel times and hope to use the most direct routes.
Thank you>

I'm not allowed to post website addresses apparently so look up Japan Guide, Alpico Express Bus and Nouhi Bus websites. All very helpful for planning bus trips and I assume you already know about Hyderdia for trains? Really easy to use when trying to plan your best routes.

Hello, two questions;
We will be traveling with our carry-on size luggage arriving in the morning and departing in the afternoon at Matsumoto Train Station. Does the station have a storage area for carry-on sized luggage?
And since we will be by ourselves, not with a tour group, how long will getting tickets on April 5th(Tuesday) take? Should we pre-buy tickets before we arrive? We can only spend 4 hours there and don't want to be stuck in a 2 hour long line.
Thanks!
Skrevet 8. mars 2016
yes, there's plenty of lockers in the Matsumoto train station, And they also have limited lockers within the matsumoto castle ground, right next to the souvenir shop
