Collecting the bike from the sweetest couple at the station (no English so be patient) is easy. Follow their instructions until the first shore and then, to be honest, follow the kibuji cycle route. It will get you to Sōja. Cost of bike rental and car xcesss to return to a different location is Y2,000 per person (Apr24). This was a fantastic experience even with overcast weather. Shrines. Quiet. Wildlife. Amazing!!!

Was glad that we did this trip as a family. For context - we are city folks with cycling experience on designated cycling tracks in parks. It was an extremely windy day (in early winter) so it was really difficult for the children at certain parts of the route (open areas - fields). Recommend to check the weather report before proceeding - generally warmer days will have higher winds; foggy days/colder days will have lesser winds. Family agreed after this trip that it is better to be cycling in the cold/foggy day rather than bright/warm day. Started at Bizen-Ichinomiya (good choice as mostly flat but downslope at more points) and ended at Soja. Bike rental 2000 yen including helmet and drop off at Soja (adult bikes). Instructions by old couple at Bizen Bike Rental shop beside station were in Japanese, but they provided a clear map and photographs of potential wrong turns. But no issues, just keep following the signs (blue and white). Bring lots of food and drinks along as there is only one convenience stall (Lawson) along the way (1/2 way mark and slightly off the track). We did not stop at any shrines/temple/pagoda/burial mound as the kids were struggling with the cycling itself (we took close to 5 hours for 17km including several stops & two detours to look for toilets). But the scenery was really beautiful - many different settings in this 17km (along creek/river, rice/cabbage field, old houses, modern houses etc). Good opportunity to see the locals in their daily lives too - little boy greeting "konichiwa" & waving to every one of us who ride pass etc mostly safe with clear signs. only need to cycling along one slightly busy narrow street at one point of time (earlier in the route). But japanese car drivers were mindful and careful. Mixed reviews from the family - i loved it, so did my youngest (9 yr old). the other 2 older children found it too tough to cycle against the strong winds.

Today we went by local train to Bizen and rented bike next to the station ( 1500 yen for normal, 2800 for electric bike and 500 per bike for left in Soja)
Route is on a plan and completely signed. At least 3 very nice temples to visit during the trip. We enjoyed this way of spending a sunny oktober day

This was an awesome way to get out in the countryside in Japan, get some exercise, and see rural life in play. It is the rice harvesting season at the moment, so there was a lot going on in the fields.
If you are into temples and shrines you can easily make a day of it, visiting them along the way. We aren't, so it just took us a couple of hours.
Both rental bike companies at either end were friendly and helpful, although minimal English spoken at Bizen-ichynomia, we got through the necessary communication though.
As long as you watch out carefully for the blue signage and pavement directional markings you can't get lost - we were given a trail map but didn't need to use it.
Thoroughly recommend this easy and enjoyable activity.

Overall, this was a lovely and easy cycle ride which took me approximately 4 hours to complete (stopping at most of the sites and including a lunch break). I did the cycle route in April 2023 and it cost me around £12 (2000 yen) to rent the bike (which had a basket and a lock and key mechanism) for the whole day and to drop it off at a different shop.

I definitely recommend taking photos of the route and guide book shown to you at the bike rental stop as it really helped at times where I wasn't sure where to turn next as signs weren't always clear and it gave me peace of mind knowing I was on the right track. Also, take food and drink with you as there aren't very many places to stop for or pick up food at all (I just went to 7-ELEVEN before getting on the train to Bizen-Ichinomiya Station which is where I started the cycle, ending at Soja Station.

The only places I got a bit lost at were Kibitsujinja shrine as I didn't notice any sign/road marking for the route (when you get to the end of the cycle path before the shrine you are met with a road crossing and lots of trees, turning left you will see the shrine, and then to continue the route after exploring it (which I recommend!), you basically cycle alongside the shrine until you see the next sign which guides you along the entire cycle route), and then again at Bichu Kokubunji temple where I didn't cycle far enough and stopped too soon meaning I had to walk quite far to the temple, basically walking the route of the cycle path.

In general, it was a very well sign posted and marked out route which made it a relaxing ride.

We did this as a day trip from Kurashiki. It’s 240 yen on the train to Soja, and the bike rental is right outside. The guy running it speaks good English and provides an excellent map. It’s easy to get out of town and once in the countryside easy to follow the route. Going from Soja means you do a lot of the cycling earlier, though on a flat plain this is hardly difficult, and can spend more time at the temple’s and burial mounds. We did take our own lunch though had excellent tea at one of the temples, the most striking of which, I think, is close to Bizen-Ichinomiya Station. You can return the bikes to the shop next to the station then come back thru Okayama of Soja. This is a great day out

Pastoral landscape along the cycling road.

近年の猛暑でのサイクリングはお勧めしませんが、春・秋なら景色を楽しむ余裕ができ、楽しめると思います。ちなみに、2,3組しかサイクリング仲間に出会えませんでした。こんな日にはしませんね。普通は…(^^;

We loved this trip. Very easy to pick up the bike. We're both tall so got relatively new bikes with 3 speed gears. Contrary to other reviews they provided us with acceptable helmets at no additional charge. The route is well marked and mostly flat. The wind was out of the north-east the morning we rode so we picked the direction we rode based on having a tailwind. Stopped at most of the shrines and temples to relax and enjoy the views. Grabbed a coffee drink from a vending machine for a pick me up. There is at least one convenience store along the route so it's easy to grab a snack as well. We were there at rice harvest time so it was interesting to watch that process. The egrets and herons were standing at the edges of the harvested fields waiting for their lunch to scurry out of hiding.
