I've visited this castle several times, but I never had time to climb it. This time, I was so thrilled that the cherry blossoms were in full bloom! It's a precious castle that has survived the war, including the castle town. There are also some interesting stories about it. Apparently they didn't have enough money, so they used the ingenuity of stacking many continuous pillars to build the castle with the wood they needed. The stone walls were only completed halfway, and in response to the Meiji era's castle abolition order, wealthy farmers and samurai from the neighborhood bought it back, leaving only the castle tower. It was a fun castle to climb.

This is my first visit in 45 years? I miss my student days. I feel lonely because it was just the two of us. Maybe the number of visitors has increased since it became a national treasure. Unfortunately, the cherry blossoms will be in bloom next week.

Matsue Castle, a.k.a Plover Castle, known by the Japanese as Chidori-Jo, due to its roof shape looks like the wings of a plover bird. Matsue Castle is a Japanese national treasurer, and one of the 12 remaining castles that still preserving their main keeps (tenshu). It’s also the second largest and the third tallest one among the 12 remaining towers. It was built as a defense structure for the city in the 17th Century (evident of two original protective talismans with date marked Keicho 16 were discovered in the basement in 2012 to prove that this castle was completed in 1611). During the Meiji era Matsue Castle was escaped from demolitions, thanks to the efforts of two local prominent citizens.

At the height of the castle building era, tall wooden pillars were in shortage. Matsue Castle builders were able to use plenty supplies of shorter pillars, built them up and passed them through every two floors. This structure design made Matsue castle a rare and unique one. It has 5 stories above the basement level. All interior stories were built with large solid wooden pillars, perpendicularly passed through two floors, and spaced out alternatively (basement and 1, 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4, 4 and 5) to keep the load balance for each floor. Large ceiling cross beams transmitted the load from the upper floors to the lower floor horizontally to support the weigh balances. Exterior walls were built with stuccos, and most of them were covered with black clapboards. The 5th highest level was the watch tower with 360 degree views of the ground and surrounding area. It was designed as a living quarter for the feudal lords. The defense mechanisms such as stone drop openings, arrow slit and gun port are seen from the second level and higher. On the lowest level is a reinforced stone built turret attached to the main castle, served as an entry level defense mechanism. Narrow wooden staircases are the only accesses between the floors. Lucky charm ornaments to protect the castle are decorated on the roofs: such as Shachihoko (killer whale) on the rooftop of the watchtower, Onigawara (demon-faced tile ornaments) on the two ends of the lower roofs, kaburagegyo, a fish shape ornament hung under the gable to protect castle from the structure fire. These ornaments bring fire protections and good luck to the structures.

Matsue Castle opens all-year round, but Castle Tower is not suitable for the visitors with mobility challenges since narrow wooden staircases are the only means for the ascending and descending within the tower. Castle Tower entry fee for Adults is ¥680. The Honmaru ground is free and wheelchair accessible via the paved walk paths. Visitors can enjoy well maintained landscapes such as flower gardens, cherry and maple trees and neatly trimmed shrubs. The cherry blossoms in the spring and fire red maple leaves in the autumn are major attractions. The scenic boat ride tours around Horikawa are available all year around. After the castle visit we took a serene walk along the castle moat, which led us to the Lafcadio Hearn’s Memorial Museum, his former residence next to the Museum and Samurai’s residence (Buke Yashiki). You can buy a combination entry ticket for ¥1100 that is good for three days. It covers Matsue Castle Tower, the former residence of Yakumo Koizumi (Lafcadio Hearn), a renowned novelist/journalist who converted to Japanese and once lived in Matsue, and the samurai residence in the Edo period. It doesn’t cover Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum.

Matsue Castle can be reached by Matsue Lake Line Loop Bus in front of the JR Station. Get off at Matsue Castle Otemae bus stop. With a Lake Line Loop Bus day pass, visitors can hop on and off to various sightseeing locations.

The beautiful Matsue Borg is located in a beautiful place. There were incredibly steep stairs in the castle. Exhibition of giant drum and shogun horse figure. It was small and dark inside the castle. Walking around in bare socks.

The area around the castle is worth a walk.
The stone walls are worth seeing.
When we entered the castle and climbed to the top, the stairs were so steep that I felt like my muscles would hurt.
However, the view from the top is very pleasant, so please come up and take a look.

Matsue Castle is one of the 12 original Castles of Japan and absolutely worth a visit! It does look impressive from the outside and it's the same inside. I could really feel the history within its walls. There are intriguing exhibitions on each floor with displays also in English. The view from the top floor is, of course, amazing. My favourite castle!

I parked my car at the nearby Otemae Parking Lot and headed into Matsue Castle Mountain Park. As with my beloved Matsumoto Castle, being a national treasure means that the original facilities remain intact, including the slippery, steep wooden stairs. It was quite a climb, but the view of Matsue Castle Town from the top floor had a calm atmosphere, and Lake Shinji could be seen in the distance. If you get off on the opposite side of the parking lot, you can also go to the Koizumi Yakumo Memorial Museum.

This is a national treasure, the only castle tower remaining in the Sanin region. It is also known as Chidori Castle due to its beautiful shape. The exhibits inside are also interesting. There are many attractions in the surrounding area, including famous historical sites, temples and shrines. Izumo soba and a sightseeing tour along the Horikawa River are also recommended.

Definitely one of the better preserved castles. No concrete or elevators here, just pure original.
Great displays on every floor and well worth a visit.
