The consulate opened in Hakodate City in 1859 and was rebuilt after several major fires to become the current building. This building was constructed in 1913 (Taisho 2) and was used as the consulate until 1934, and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Hakodate City. It was renovated in 1992 and is now open to the public as the Port Opening Memorial Hall. Inside, there is a tea room and a British goods store, so you can enjoy shopping and afternoon tea.

If you walk down Motoi-zaka a little from Motomachi Park, you will see an elegant white and blue Western-style building. This is the Former British Consulate in Hakodate, built in 1913 according to a design by the British government's Shanghai Engineering Office. The consul's office and living quarters have been reproduced exactly as they were at the time.
There is also a corridor lined with panels that explain at a glance the history of the opening of Hakodate's port.
In the garden at the back, there is a "World Bird's Eye View Map of Hakodate Port Opening." This map is a carpet tucked on the floor. This building is now also known as the "Port Opening Memorial Hall."

Quirky old building with lots of old colonial character. Made to feel welcome and stayed for tea and scones. As English tourists this was an amusing find and one of the best buildings we visited in Hakodate.

It is located halfway up Motoi-zaka in the Motomachi district of Hakodate. This building has been used as a consulate since 1859, when Hakodate opened its port. It is now a museum, and you can visit the building for a fee. You can visit the area around the building and the garden for free. I have visited the museum twice before, so this time I only visited the garden.

There is a paid viewing area, but the tea room and restrooms just inside are free to use. The tea room was full of customers. It seems they also offer an afternoon tea set that will leave you full.
Going around the building is the English garden. Roses bloom in season. At the end of November, there were still a few autumn roses left. The yellow of the ginkgo leaves and the red of the ivy climbing the building were beautiful.

It is a small Western-style building, and you can feel the atmosphere of the consul's life and work here. The interior of the building has a faint rose scent, which is very pleasant. There is also an exhibition on the history of the opening of Japan, so you can learn in a fun way.
The tea room faces the rose garden, which is wonderful in the rose season. The day I visited was sunny and the temperature was expected to be 27 degrees Celsius, but a pleasant breeze came in through the fully open windows, and I thought that Hakodate's climate might be similar to that of England. I had cream tea here, and there are many types of tea to choose from, including some that are not usually familiar. There is a lot of milk and tea, enough for about four cups. The cups are Wedgwood. You can really get a taste of the British atmosphere. The only disappointment was that the scones were served with whipped cream instead of clotted cream. I thought it would be fresh cream because it's Hokkaido, but it was a little different from England. The scones were also a little hard and small. The size is just right for Japanese people.
I bought a souvenir called "Hakodaddy en croute", a pastry made of bean paste wrapped in pie crust. It seems they also have financiers and cookies. Apparently when Hakodate first opened up to the world, it was called "Hakodaddy".
I think it's a good place to take a break between sightseeing.

While in town we thought better go and see how the British Consul lived here in days gone by .
Lovely British style home in a great position. Some interesting information to read, find out a bit of the history,
As was the custom in those days they lived the grand life and by the look of the huge dining room table did lots of entertaining. As they probably do today
Nice English style garden,
The place should be lived in I reckon
