On our way back from a day trip from Sapporo to the Shakotan Peninsula, we stopped at this characteristic sake brewery.
It is located in a former warehouse, qualified as a historical building, quite central in Otaru. It offers free tours of the various stages of the production chain. The visit ends at the attached shop, wich also allows tasting of the sake produced here.
The route is rewarding, and the captions allow you to delve deeper into the sake brewing process.
The management emphasizes on the one hand the quality – due to the quite wild and uncontaminated condition of the nearby area – of the water used in the processing; on the other hand that, given the cool to cold climate of Otaru, here the manufacturing of this national Japanese drink takes place exceptionally throughout the year.
Very different varieties of sake are available for purchase at the shop. We purchased two bottles of different types, which we then consumed upon our return home, finding them very appreciable.

It was the final sightseeing spot of the tour. About 5 minutes by car from the center of Otaru. This shop makes and sells alcohol. The building called “Kamekōzō” has a long history and was magnificent. If you wish, you can observe the process of making alcohol. Finally, the promised tasting and shopping. I had a bite of amazake. You can also get a one-time galapong without a blank ticket for 500 yen, and even at the end, you can get two packs of amazake.

You can visit the brewery at the brewery made in the comet, the sakamai of Hokkaido. You can sample several kinds of sake at the direct market. It's a delicious sake, so you'll definitely buy it if you try it.

While we arrived late to tour the premises, the same shopping experience was food. Tasting (if you were not driving) helped in the selection of sake and wine. Staff were patient and courteous.

Visited this factory on a guided tour and found the process of how they make sake very interesting. Our guide explained all of the processes and at the end of the tour we could drink as much sake as we wanted. Not a big fan but it was good to try all of the different types of sake. Did not buy any.

If you are in Otaru, I think this is worth a visit. It is a bit further walk away from the tourist shops and it was very quiet when we arrived around 3pm until a tour bus of Japanese came. The tour is not available in English but you can download an app to listen to the narration. We just chose to read the labels walking through and took a short walk because highlight was to taste the sake. Service is friendly and we went straight to test their top two best seller. A very pleasant trip there.

Hi Matt, I don't think you can arrange for an English with them but some of the staff is able to speak a little English but you need to speak slowly for them to catch your point.
The visit to the production factory which is located at level 2 there are English explanation board therefore I don't think there will be any issues for you to visit.

May I know how to go the Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkogura from Sakaimachi Street ? Can it be reached within walking distance from Sakaimachi Street or do I have to take bus to get there ? Is there any admission fees ? Thank you.
Skrevet 26. januar 2016
I was on an organised bus tour so Yes there was an entry fee and the way I got there was on a tour bus. This made it very cheap as there were several other interesting things to see on the same tour. Try to find a tour and have fun with the sake samples-they give you 10 but I could only manage to drink 2!
