This is a review from MANY years ago. In 1965 my mother and father and brother and I left our home in Hong Kong and traveled to Japan en route the United States. We visited Kinugawa Onsen. I was 17 years old. I remember the hotel had tatami mats. We had to take off our shoes and wear slippers inside. We slept on the mats. But before we slept, we went to the spa. It was quite hot. People were not wearing bathing suits. It was very different from what we were used to. After soaking in the hot baths for quite a while, we went outside on the terrace where there was another pool and a band playing. I remember we dove into the pool and it was FREEZING!! So that is the main experience. Soak in hot and then go to very cold. It is so good for your body. I remember in the evening my parents and brother and I put on our kimonos that were provided by the hotel and the Japanese wooden clogs and we walked around the town. I think we were the only Caucasians in the entire town. Everyone was looking at us and pointing. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

This was an amazing place to stay. The staff went out of their way for us many times. We left our camera in room when checking out and they sent a car with a staff member to get our camera to us. Beyond service. The baths were very quiet even thought hotel was busy. They provided a spiritual moment for us. The food was amazing with lots of choices. One of the best places I have stayed in all our travels Thank you

An oceangoing ship crew member, he used to visit Kinugawa Onsen on his six-month holiday to reward his wife. There was a long-established A-XX Hotel along the river, and the Kinugawa XX Hotel next door. They used to have a relaxed atmosphere and were great.
But after COVID, travel agencies started reserving rooms and selling them cheaply, so the relaxed atmosphere disappeared.
There was a lot of noise in the large bath, and the food buffet was overflowing with delinquents who were pushing people aside to get what they wanted. In the parking lot, people were getting in and out of the car in the middle of the road.
It was such a mess that it made me want to separate the food venue and bathrooms according to the room price.
I'm done with Kinugawa.

The quality of the hot springs was good, but there weren't many other tourist attractions nearby and no good places to wander around during the day, so we spent our time inside the hot spring facilities.

Kinugawa is a tranquil little town that the Kinugawa river flows through. The steep sides of the river have several hotels of varying class, with both affordable and pricey options. As the name "onsen" implies, the primary reason why anyone would visit here is to relax at one of the many hot springs and have a quiet break from city life (so for the people who are calling this town "boring", maybe you should stick to Tokyo and Disneyland!).

I found that the people in the town were all very welcoming, from the ladies at the Visitor's Center (who not only gave me suggestions for restaurants and cafes in the area but also phoned each place to make sure of the hours they would be open!) to the shopkeepers and proprietors of the various eateries who were happy that a Westerner like myself had come off the beaten path to enjoy what they had to offer, I was met with nothing but kindness and graciousness from all of them.

Aside from the blissful feeling of several relaxing soaks in a true outdoor onsen pool at my hotel with a view of the river below, I spent part of my days wandering along the river paths. There is a nice suspension bridge and the easy walking path on the other side has many naturally beautiful sites. I climbed a carved rock staircase up the side of the ravine with a spectacular view of the river and rocks below and the early colors of fall foliage. There were little geothermal steam vents coming from the ground here and there on the wooded path and torii gates, some of them very tiny, marking places considered sacred.

The town has two mascots, cute little 'Oni' demons (one red and one blue) that represent thunder and lightning, and there are small statues of them in a variety of poses scattered all over the town. A rubber stamp is available at each statue for people to mark their journals, etc. The name Kinugawa literally means "angry demon". At one of the fast food shops in town I even had a sweet red bean-filled Taiyaki but instead of having the traditional fish shape, it was shaped like a reclining little demon (so cute!).

It may not be everyone's idea of a good time, but frankly, when I go to Japan again this town will probably be included in my visit.

Kinugawa is like many other Hot Spring Towns. There isn't much to do outside the doors of your accommodation. There is no "Historical Downtown" or "Shopping District". The comments by other reviewers about derelict buildings are correct.
