Very nice place. You can spend the entire day there watching the shows and walking in the park. There are places to eat there too. It's not necessary to spend the entire day there, about 4 hours are ok. There is free transportation from there to Nikko's center.

We booked our seats on the trains the day prior at the Tobu Tourist Information Centre at Asakusa Station. The next morning we took the 6.30am express train from Tokyo's Asakusa Station to Kinugawa-onsen Station and then caught a taxi to Edo Wonderland. We would have taken the bus from Kinugawa-onsen Station but it doesn't connect well with the train times and takes 30mins to get to Edo Wonderland. As there are five of us (three teenage boys and two adults) I thought we might have to take two taxis or wait for a larger taxi. We tried to book in advance but were unable to, so we just rocked up to the taxi rank and spoke to the first driver. He gestured us all into his cab - four in the back and one in the front. It was about 5mins to Edo Wonderland, costing 2700yen. With no Japanese (and the driver had no English) we managed to arrange for the driver to come back and collect us in time for us to get the return train we had booked.

Edo Wonderland is a re-creation of a typical Japanese town during the Edo Period - the 250 years before the name was changed to Tokyo. Everything authentically represents village life in the 1600s and 1700s - all of the staff are in appropriate period costume, all of the eateries are typical teahouses of the time, all of the buildings and facilities are authentic. While there are a few English language signs, this is quite out-of-the-way and it's a theme park designed more for the home population so everything is in Japanese, including the shows. We saw the ninja show, geisha show, and the water magic show - all were great and we enjoyed them despite having no Japanese-language knowledge. Everything is exceptionally well choreographed with perfectly-timed sound effects.

We arrived at 9am opening and left about 2pm, which was enough time to look around and enjoy the shows and some activities.

Nice historical theme park. We arrived at 2pm and things were already slowing down. Best to go earlier when you can participate in more of the hands-on activities (block painting, arrow shooing, Geisha makeup, mask painting). We enjoyed the Ninja show and activity.

I think it is a great place to go if you have children. There are many fun activities who individuals to do. I, myself, did. shuriken throwing and went into the maze. There are also many activities that are not entirely unreasonable. There is woodblock making, you can make senbei, and do archery. The best part are the shows! We went to a ninja show which was genuinely quite remarkable, and I had a lot of fun.

Moreover, the general scenery is quite nice. It is not an amusement park but rather a historical reenactment park, where there are many pristine buildings that are supposed to be a recreation of Edo. I do not know how accurate it is, but it looks nice.

However, I feel as though one's time in Japan is better spent doing other things. I would probably recommend this a lot higher to someone who lives near Nikko and wants a fun day activity, but I am unsure if it is worth it for tourists with a limited time.

Just wanted to add some tips from my trip!

The biggest one is ninja school does NOT happen on weekdays unless it's the summer school holidays. We didn't find this anywhere on the site and my kids were suuuper disappointed about no ninja school and we really wished we had known as we could have just gone on a weekend instead.

The highlight for my kids ages 4 and 8 was definitely renting the ninja costumes, and you get to keep the sword which was very good news as our swords were pretty wrecked after fighting each other with them all day.

I would definitely recommend bringing snacks. There are some snack stalls but no drinks vending machines (except for right outside the park), and there aren't any basics like crisps or crackers for sale.

There was a geisha parade that wasn't marked on the time table, I think it happened around 2:30.

This place has a lot of instagrammable photo spots. Several shows you can watch for free and a Oiran procession that's interesting. All shows are in Japanese, so unless you understand, you just have to guess by their gestures what's going on. Best show is the Ninja show at the beginning of the village.

I originally thought this place was going to be a bit tacky but it turned out to be a lot of fun. There are a lot of activities and exhibits to see and you would make the most of your time by planning your activities in accordance with their scheduled times. The henshin/dress-up experience is a must and you should arrive early to secure your preferred costume. The costumes are priced differently depending on which one you choose.
