Use the city bus, plan your visit carefully, and spend the morning
4,0 av 5 boblermar. 2014

I took the 3-hour Kamenoi sightseeing bus that departs from Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu and stops at Beppu Station. A female bus guide will guide you through the 7 hells. If you go by yourself, you will have to pay an entrance fee to all the hells, so I think this sightseeing bus is a good deal for 4,000 yen, as it includes a guide and takes you around. You can specify the date and time online. You can get on and off at either Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu or Beppu Station, and you can leave at either location, or you can just tell the guide and leave midway.

It was hot today, so I took a relaxing break at Shiraike Jigoku for the last time just before lunch, where I bought a can of juice from a vending machine and drank it.
When I finished, I went to throw away the empty can, but I looked for a collection box nowhere to be found. There were three vending machines in the park, but there was no collection box to be found near any of them.
There were no staff to be seen in the park, so I ended up carrying the empty can to my car with me.
If they aren't going to install collection boxes for empty cans, I don't think they should install vending machines at all. Going to install them would be seen as just making money.

This is a famous hell tour, but it was my first time. First, I parked my car in the parking lot of Umi Jigoku (apparently the largest) and started the hell tour from Umi Jigoku. The colors of Umi Jigoku were beautiful and the steam rising from it was very impressive. Onishibozu Jigoku was also interesting, as it felt like a close-up look at volcanic activity on Earth with the grey mud bubbling from the ground, but when I entered the next hell, Kamado Jigoku, the scenery suddenly turned into a theme park of a fallen country. The next hell, Oniyama Jigoku, is a crocodile theme park, and Shiraike Jigoku is a tropical fish theme park, which was a bit disappointing. This is as far as you can walk from Umi Jigoku. From there, we took a car to Chinoike Jigoku. Here, it was back to its original state, and the red water pond was impressive. I bought ointment that can only be changed here, and then went to the last hell, Tatsumaki Jigoku. This is the hell where geysers come out, but I entered at just the right time and was able to see the geyser that erupts once every 30-40 minutes. In conclusion, with seven hells, there are differences in quality, so I think I didn't need to see them all, but you can't really tell until you see them.

Japan is famous for its natural Hot Springs being an archipelago with active volcanoes. And being a temperate country, these hot springs or Onsen serve as a retreat, relaxation, healing and attraction not just for locals but for tourists alike for hundreds of years. Some hot springs have been used as a natural or commercial baths or resorts and some who are deemed too hot serves as a natural attraction and everlasting wonder of nature. One of the places of scenic beauty in Japan, it is located in Beppu’s Kannawa and Kamegawa districts also known as Jigoku or the Seven Hells of Beppu. It has 7 different hot springs which were naturally formed and with different beauty, presence, colors and mystery. For this Exceptional review will be in the Kannawa area.

To get here, we need to take Bus from Beppu station and got off at Kannawa stop and from here we crossed the street unto its main entance. Ticket is around 400 Yen for individual Hells or 2000 Yen for all 7. And since we arrived so late literally 15 mins before closing and we don’t have time to come back to Beppu in our trip we informed the staff if its alright for us to enter. We said we just have to see and take photos quickly and luckily they still allowed us to enter and we truly appreciate them for giving us a chance for just a few mins!!! Kudos to the staff of Hells of Beppu. The first Hell that greeted us is the Umi or Sea Jigoku, with its hot steaming white smoke coming from its 200m deep water and stunning Cobalt Blue waters. Located just ahead of the Red Torii gates in the middle of a beautilful Japanese garden against the backdrop of lush greeneries, flowers and bountiful nature - Umi is the largest of the hells famed for its Cobalt Blue colour. What an astonishing site indeed to greet you first and truly a wonderful work of nature!!!

The Cobal Blue color, boiling water and the steaming white smoke are giving you a relaxing and mesmerizing atmosphere, scenery and experience. In fact, its so beautiful to be part of Hell as it was. Up to this day, I still could not forget that moment when we first saw this Blue hot spring!!! Coming from combination of mostly deep earth Gas, Iron sulfate oxide-rich steam that goes to as high as 98 celcius. These onsens are not for bathing and mostly for viewing due to its dangerous high temperature. Since we reached by closing time we have the unexpected advantage of taking those lovely photos and videos without a lot of people and photo bombers - meaning we have the place almost entirely on our own with just a bit of last few remaining tourists. Just across the Umi is a big Water Lily pond where it gets the replenishment of hot water from this onsen. The pond is as equally as beautilful like the Umi and it has benches all around perfect for resting and taking your memorable shots.

After a few mins of immersing and taking it all in on this extraordinary and incredible work of nature we headed our way to the next Jigoku which is the Red one called Chinoike or Blood Pond hell which has a dazzling Red water as suppose to the Umi and its also a bit smaller compared to the latter. It is the oldest pool amongts the 7 and its a Red hot mud containing iron oxide, magnesium and other minerals which produce this vivid Red color. It is around 30m deep and 78C degrees hot. The pool is surrounded by a beautilful garden and large stones with a black metal railings for protection. White steam is oozing from the hot waters non stop and it has a more powerful vibes than the calming Umi but we loved them both!!! We took our lovely and unforgettable photos and videos here and even though its already past 6 in the evening the staff allowed us to finish what were doing and is not rushing us to get out which I truly admire - they prioritize first for the concerns and wonderful experience of their customers - again another thumbs up!!!

Finally, since its past closing time of the site, we have to exit the facility as the last visitors that day but we decided to go take some Onsen experience which is just located at the back of the facility. Since we were already satisfied with Umi and Chinoike we could just go back to Beppu anytime to visit the rest of the hells. However, surprisingly as we walked to the Onsen facility to our right with some miracle we saw the 3rd Jigoku - Oniishi Bouzu or just simply Bozu. Since Meiji era, it has become a popular attraction due to its unique boiling Gray hot mud which looks like a shaved head. It consists of Sodium Monochloride and with a water temp of 99 degrees. We saw Bouzu outside and just like the first 2, it is situated in the middle of garden surrounded by rocks and metal railings. We took some amazing shots and videos even from outside including a selfie hehe. There is a open air public Foot onsen at this area which we could have tried if we came earlier - for sure next time when we came back!!!

The rest of the Jigokus which we didn’t have the chance to visit include Tornado hell, Shiraike, Oniyama and Funace - next time when we come back to Beppu we will surely visit them. As mentioned earlier, we have to try Beppu Onsen since this city is famous for so we went to the back just after Bouzu and they have a spectacular and relaxing Onsen facility for men/women and private for families/friends called Onishi no Yu. We tried for just 620 Yen and to our surprise the area is not crowded with just a few patrons and they come and go so it feels like we have the Onsen just for the two of us. It has a very incredible and charming view of the lush greeneries outside and with the cool calming Spring weather on a hot tub, the birds singing and the romantic sunset nothing could get better than this. It has an indoor pool with a view outside, and 2 outdoor pools on the lower and upper floors. The onsens have wooden seats to give you the absolute comfort and convenience. We tried all 3 of them and each has its own unique, serene and relaxing experience. The water temperature is almost the same for the 3 of them and naturally sourced. By far this is the best Onsen experience we ever had!!! If only we took the Private onsens we could have taken photos of this wonderful moment but for sure will do next time!!! The entrance fee consists of a towel which you could bring back home as Omiyage!!!

We left the Onsen and Hells of Beppu with a big smile in our faces, hearts and minds. There were very few people outside and the sun is just setting down in the horizon. This is definitely the cherry on top of the ice cream and glad we did it in 1 day in Beppu!!! We went back to our base in Hakata using our JR Pass again and feeling relaxed, peaceful, rejuvenated and joyful. We really did left our hearts in Beppu and surely we will come back again soon!!! See you soon Beppu!!! Mata neh!!! :=)

You can see hot spring pools with different characteristics in one place. The staff will also regularly introduce the characteristics of the hot springs. There are some souvenir shops and restaurants inside, where you can buy hot spring eggs and free foot baths. You can also go there without bringing a towel. Buy it there. Since there were many tourists on the day I went, the footbath was also very crowded. If you want to take a dip, you may have to wait a while. Overall, a highly recommended attraction!

This is a place you definitely want to visit when you go to Beppu. I came here again after a long time, for the first time in decades. It was full of tourists, but I was able to park and take my time touring the hells. Umi Jigoku was well worth the visit. The souvenir shop is large and has a wide variety of items, so it's a convenient place to buy Beppu souvenirs. They also offer hand and foot reflexology massages, which I ended up getting.

Pretty good place, views are nice. There is a souvenir shop too.

Only downside was, you either have to use bus or taxi to go there. The bus can take a while.

We stayed there until the place was closed, so we had to ask the staff to call a taxi for us and they did more than just calling us a taxi, the staff waited with us until the taxi arrived! Wow such a service!

Overall this place really is beautiful.

I went on a bus tour and only saw Kamado Hell, and it was fun. I tried drinking hot spring water that makes me 10 years younger, and let the steam hit my face, and my skin felt better. I also took a foot bath, which was great because it really relieved my fatigue. It's a great place to take pictures and make memories.

Kamenoi Bus's Hell Tour runs twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon. I booked it through highwaybus.com.
I had planned to do this on the second day of my Beppu trip, but since I was able to make it in time for the afternoon flight on the day I arrived in Beppu, I moved up my reservation date, dropped my luggage off at the hotel, and joined right away. It's convenient because you can easily change the time using your smartphone.
Both the guide and the driver were kind and thoughtful, asking if they wanted me to take photos. The guide also gave a simple explanation of Beppu's topography, which was helpful for me as it was my first time in Beppu. I recommend it for people visiting Beppu for the first time.

Our first stop once we disembarked on the island of Kyushu from the ferry was to visit this unique attraction in Beppu. On approach, there are plumes of smoke from different places, but the biggest plumes lead us here. There is an admission charge to see more than one hot springs, but, in retrospect, I don't think it's worth it to pay more than the basic fee.
Besides the plumes of smoke, the acrid sulfur smell hits our sensory organs. The steam vents remind me of the lava tubes on the Big Island's Volcano National Park.
There are many tourists, many Chinese speakers from Taiwan, China, or Singapore.
I found this attraction worthwhile if you don't pay extra.
