On the west side of Sendai Station, where the Hirose River curves wide, there is said to be a dazzling, otherworldly glittering building in this green area. That was Zuihoden.
This Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Masamune DATE, built in 1637, and is considered to be "a gorgeous mausoleum building that conveys the remnants of Momoyama culture." Only Zuihoden, the mausoleum of Date Masamune, is known to the world, but Kansenden, the mausoleum of the second lord, Date Tadamune, and Zennōden, the mausoleum of the third lord, Date Tsunamune, also stand here, and you can see them as if you were going around these buildings.

瑞鳳殿是祭祀伊達政宗的靈廟,建於伊達政宗逝世隔年的1637年。以五顏六色的裝飾設計,斑斕奪目,該時期濃厚的文化特色依然留存。

We were amazed at the grounds and the architecture here. Words cannot describe but this is a spot that no one should miss. Have attached a few photos to express our thoughts.

This is a mausoleum dedicated to Date Masamune. There are several shrines around it. The colors are vivid here and there. It was burned down in the Sendai air raid during the Greater East Asia War, but was later rebuilt.
Thank you very much.

2024.03 Saturday / Zuihoden
[Time required] 1 hour [Cost] 570 yen [Parking] Free? ?
[Impressions] I had time in the morning, so I went to Zuihoden. Since my hotel was in Kokubuncho, I went to Sendai Station from Hirosedori Station, left my luggage in a coin locker, and went to Omachi Nishikoen Station.
From there, I walked across the Hirose River and arrived in about 20 minutes.
There is a bus from Sendai Station, but it is a long walk if you take a local bus, and the Loople Sendai seems to be full on holidays and there are people left behind, so I chose to take the subway.
The viewing is one-way, and the ticket booth is at the beginning. If you walk from there, you will reach the Nirvana Gate. There was a volunteer waiting there, and if you ask, he will guide you to Zuihoden.
After looking at the museum next door, follow the route and you will find the exit. The reconstructed appearance based on the skull was convincing.
There was a line of taxis, so I thought that taking a taxi would be the most convenient way to get there.

Interesting and beautiful place not just for the history but for the beauty of the surroundings. Unfortunately it was completely destroyed in 1945, so this is all a reconstruction. Lots of uneven steps though.

Although it is quite close to the center of the city, this temple has the feeling of a rather remote and rural surrounding. It's placed within a little forest area where it is rather quiet.
After a short walk uphill, you enter the area where you partially also find English descriptions. Generally a really nice place, now during the sakura blossom season maybe especially good to visit. Definitely a bit of a mystical touch which surprised me.

This is the mausoleum (tomb) of Date Masamune. I feel that the architectural style and atmosphere are similar to that of Ieyasu's Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which was built in the same era.
It is said that Ieyasu himself ordered that it be built here, where you can hear the cries of the cuckoo, and it is a pleasant place with lush greenery.
It was a perfect day to visit on a clear day in early spring (cherry blossom season).

Zuihoden is the mausoleum in Aoba District, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It is dedicated to the famous daimyo Date Masamune of Ou during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
The main hall in the entire park, Zuihoden, was built in the gorgeous style of Momoyama culture. It has many architectural details, including exquisite family crests, doorknobs, wooden structures, etc. The existing Zuihoden was rebuilt in 1974. This It is a fee-based venue. In order to maintain the tranquility of the entire mausoleum area and the maintenance of basic equipment, come during the season when the maple leaves turn red. There is a unique scenery. The cherry blossom season in April is also very interesting.

If you use the Sendai Loople bus, get off at Stop #4 for Zuihoden. The bus was very crowded, so we knew all the sites would be as well. It was sakura season and we expected this would be the case, nevertheless, the buses were as full as the Tokyo metro at rush hour, but running late thus it became difficult to plan a route and pick up times.
Once you get off the bus, there is a very long - but pleasant - uphill walk under very tall, very old cedar trees. It is not a difficult walk, but the paving stones underfoot can be tricky. You can either walk up the stone steps or stay on the ramp along the side of the stairs - we shifted from one to the other.
Date Masamune’s mausoleum is in an isolated spot in the compound under tall trees. Beyond its own entrance gate there are more stairs. The path continues under the trees to two other family members’ mausoleums of a similar style - allow time for all of them. The main draw here is the Mausoleum of Date Masamune and if your time is limited this is what you should see.
The brilliantly painted carving with gold embellishments could be described as garish; the brightness of the whole is, of course, because, this is a modern reconstruction due to extensive damage in the war. Be aware that you can not walk around the building which is protected by fencing: visitors are confined to the area in front of the building.
Visitor’s tip: entrance fee ¥550, but if you show your Loople Bus Pass there is discount of ¥100.
