The Haute-Ville the oldest part of FINA with nice architecture and awsome view of the city and surrounding countryside. I had a great stroll throughout this part of the city. I could see not only churches or cathedral, unfortunately closed, but also every day life of Malagasy people and to my surprise even a lemur rambling on the small square. I wanted just to stroll around in my relaxed peace so I declined the offers from the guides readily available.

The old town of Fianarantsoa is nice for a stroll for 1-2 hours to see some culture in Madagascar. You can take a guide for around 60.000 ariary for the group. You will see many old buildings, good views and nice streets. This is a nice activity.

Fianarantsoa, a city built on the hills of the "High Plateaux", is in the country of the Betsileo peoples, who were fought by the expansionist armies of the kingdom of Imérina, capital Antanarivo (Tana). This happened during the reign of what we call here "the Bloody Queen" from her name Ranavalona I (1788-1861). Defeated, in 1830, the Betsileo were subjected to military control, with a fort called “Rova”, also serving as the governor's palace. Today it is located on the top of the “Ivoegnana” hill, which dominates the city, at an altitude of 1200 m. Over time, a village grew up around Rova, with at that time, wooden houses and plant fiber roofs as well as numerous Protestant, Lutheran and Calvinist churches. Because Ranavalona I, had chased the French and the Christian Jesuits from the kingdom.
Fianarantsoa, which means "Where good is learned", was therefore born from the will of the Queen who, in addition, wanted the city to resemble Tana, her capital. This is why a lake “Anosy” (pronounced Anous), identical to that of Tana at the foot of the Isoraka hill, was created to the west of Rova. After the death of Ranavalona I and the takeover of Madagascar by France, a cathedral of Christian worship, in the "Tuscan Roman" style, called "of the Holy Name of Jesus", was built at the foot of Rova, 1871 to 1890.
The city having developed on the slopes of the hill, then in the lower part, the Rova district, fell into disuse, because it was too far from the colonial city center and the merchant circuits!! He also became very poor.
It was only in 2008 that patrons, with the “Heritsialonina” association, decided to renovate this old heritage district, also called “Antanana Ambony” or old town, whose houses were falling into ruin.
The main street "rue du Rova", which was very steep, was transformed into a staircase, prohibiting the circulation of vehicles, which must park in the car park in front of the cathedral. The rest of the neighborhood is made up of fairly disordered, maze-shaped streets, called "Elakelatrano." Some guesthouses are open, as well as a small covered market, which sells everything and utility stalls, at the bottom of the neighborhood. rue du Rova. There are also a few artists, who offer their works and school children, who keep themselves busy, selling envelopes "by airmail", with beautiful drawings on them!!
The Betsileo, to build their house, use brick made on site, with red or gray clay; The houses, as well as the institutions necessary for social life, are gradually being upgraded with these bricks and their tiled roof. There is a school, a private Protestant high school, which dates from the creation of the district, a dispensary, a collective wash house, where women meet. Betsiléo style homes are of several levels of standing, from the simplest with small windows, to more elaborate with an open veranda on the facade, some have a small green space. A common house was also built. Unfortunately the old Rova, partially destroyed, has been transformed into a school and cannot be visited. Many Protestant churches are located along Rue du Rova, but unfortunately, many only open on Sundays and cannot be visited during the week.
With Pauline, our guide, who speaks perfect French, and who is also continuing her studies, we toured the neighborhood, with in places, a fairly impressive bird's eye view of the lower town and the entire region. Pauline, who lives in the neighborhood, was for us the key to all the contacts we were able to have with people and the necessary intermediary between what we see and its meaning. I suggest visiting this area on Sunday, which is very lively, with the opening of the churches.
