Very nice catholic church with an impressive facade made of brick. It was constructed in 1890 not far from the FJKM Antranobiriky protestant church and FLM Trinitie Masombahoaka and other modest protestant churches

When we arrive in the city of Fianarantsoa (200,000 inhabitants), served by the RN7, 400 km from Tana to the South, we see numerous monuments, which date from the post and pre-colonial periods of the 19th century. The upper town, with its numerous churches and the cathedral, then stands out for the view!!
A historical reminder is necessary here. After the takeover of a large part of the island, by the kings of Imerina, from the reign of Andrianampoinimerina (1745-1810), Queen Ranavalona I (1788-1861), who reigned firmly and force on its territory, founded the city of Fianarantsoa. The goal is to better control the central territories of the Betsileo ethnic group, who fought fiercely against royal power. Fianarantsoa, which is the translation of "Where we Learn the Good", was created in 1831, on the hill of Ambozontany, at the location of the Betsiléo village of "Ivoégnana", at 1200 m altitude. A village was created around the “Rova” fortress.
After the death of Queen Ranavalona I, who was fiercely opposed to Christianity, the French Jesuit Father Marc Finaz, from the Toulouse region, undertook to introduce the faith.
Under the direction of Father Alphonse Taix, the construction of the cathedral took place from 1871 to 1890, with the basic material being brick made on site, using the red clay soil of the region.
The style of this building is, as is often the case in overseas territories, inspired by European styles. This cathedral, which bears the name "Holy Name of Jesus", is located on Ambozontany hill, just before Rova.
When you visit the upper town, you definitely park in front of the cathedral, then continue on foot on Rue du Rova.
By observing this building, we can say that it is in the “neo-Roman Tuscan” style. It is characterized by two square-section bell towers, framing a flat three-level facade. The porch is open with a semicircular arch, above which there are three stained glass lancets in neo-Roman style. The last level is an ornate panel with a niche with columns and arches, housing a statue of Jesus. The whole thing is topped with a triangular capital.
The two bell towers are topped with a polygonal aedicula, supporting a dome, covered with pressed sheet metal. They are poorly crafted on the two lower levels and have openings with sound flaps for the bells.
Seen from the outside, going up Rue du Rova, we see the nave, lined with two aisles, with a single nave without a transept. The bedside is three-sided, open with historic stained glass windows.
The interior of the cathedral has beautiful decorations, notably the barrel vault, which is covered with polychrome frescoes with geometric figures, such as medallions or even coffered bands and rose windows.
The vault is supported by lower sides open with stained glass windows on the upper part, which illuminate the building well. The lower part has openings with semi-circular arches, opening onto the ambulatory. The square section pillars are bordered by columns with painted capitals. The ambulatory is open with historic stained glass windows under a flat ceiling painted with polychrome geometric figures, to the most beautiful effect.
The altar, made of gilded material, is placed on a marble platform. It is surmounted by a statue of Jesus placed in a niche with columns and frames, with a red border, decorated with clover flowers.
The three-sided apse is, in its upper part, open with historiated stained glass windows with semi-circular lancets, grouped in twos and threes. Finally, the ceiling of the apse, at the bottom of the tank, is painted with rosettes on a blue background.
This cathedral gives off an impression of serenity with decorations, which give it a prestigious and solemn air.

Dommage.
Le bus 22 dessert ce lieu.

The old town of Fianarantsoa is the nicest in Madagascar and is well preserved. It lies on a hill, so some decent walking required, however, most of the buildings have been nicely restored, and there is a very pleasant atmosphere, if you manage to avoid the kids begging or trying to sell cards. The old town houses 5 churches, one for each denomination, and that all packed in a very small area. Most churches will be closed however, unless there is a mass or a practice going on. The catholic cathedral is near the bottom of the old town, and stands out as a church.

When doing a city walk to the old town (unesco heritage) and the destroyed palace , you pass by this twin tower church. Great views around this first church build in Tana.
