We followed our nose & it brought us to the Birch Memorial. We had to climb a flight of stairs before reaching the base of the tower. Also, on the ground before the beginning of the stairs were the words of “Jejak Warisan” & “Heritage Trail” in a circle. Inside the circle was the word “Ipoh.” It looked like a stamp mark from above the stairs.
The white-washed iconic Birch Memorial Clock Tower was opened in 1909 at the cost of 25,000 British pound sterling. It was built in memory of the 1st British Resident of Perak, James Wheeler Woodford (JWW) Birch who was assassinated in Pasir Salak by Lela Pandak Lam better known as Dato Maharaja Lela in 1875. The Clock Tower was officiated by JWW Birch’s son, Sir Ernest Woodford Birch who was the 8th British Resident of Perak, then.
However, Malaysians view this differently. Dato Maharaja Lela was a freedom fighter who died resisting an invasion. The Malaysian curriculum teaches school children of his heroic deeds & ultimate sacrifice to save his country from imperial rule. The Perak State Authority honours Dato Maharaja Lela by naming 1 street to the north next to the memorial in his name. The street to the south was named Jalan Dato Sagor. Dato Sagor was also executed for the murder of James Birch.
Located in a small square near the Town Hall & State Mosque, the Clock Tower has 4 statues at each corner above the clock representing the 4 British administration virtues of loyalty, justice, patience & fortitude.
Not many know that the clock requires manual winding service once every 5 days to keep it running. Time Recorder Sdn Bhd has been selected by the Ipoh City Council to maintain the clock. Apparently, there is a mother bell & 4 small bells above the clock which rest in between the 4 corners. They are used to strike the chimes.
Below the clock are 4 panels. Each panel depicts the different stages of civilisation. Panel A which is to the North shows the Stone Age, Iron Age & the Early Eastern People. Panel B which is to the West shows the Eastern Mediterranean, the Far East, Greece & Rome. Panel C which is to the South shows the Byzantine Empire, Islam, Age of Chivalry, Age of Faith, Gothic Art, the Renaissance, the Reformation & the Elizabethan Age. Panel D which is to the East shows Modern Science, Art & Social Services. Some of the popular figures in colour that I recognised include Michaelangelo, Columbus, Martin Luther, William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Beethoven, Florence Nightingale, Darwin & Edison.
In short, it is a beautiful memorial full of controversies which only the local folk will know & keep. One visit is enough for me.

A key tin mining town in colonial times, Ipoh is full of British-influenced buildings that reflect past glory and affluence. This impressive clock tower is a perfect example. Nestled in a serene garden, Birch Memorial Clock Tower adds a layer of unique European flair to Ipoh.

This old clock tower is worth a look on a city sightseeing tour. It says alittle about the history of this clock tower and is good for a quick photo.

The Birch Memorial clock tower is quite close to the main railway train station of Ipoh.
The colonial architecture is really attracted to me.
As it is so hot so the best go there after 5 pm.

The clock tower is quite close to the train station and occupies a huge space, signifying the importance of the clock tower to the city. The design of the clock tower is in sync with the architecture of the place.

Worth a quick visit the clock tower is named after J Birch who was somewhat controversial. Apparently he and the Malays didnt get along to such an extent he was assassinated by them. One interesting thing about the clock is that one of the portraits on the tower is whited out. I was told by a local that this was Mohamed and the Malays had protested about him been portrayed so it had been painted out. The white paint is fading so you can still make out the original portrait underneath

The Birch Memorial Clock Tower is a clock tower located close to the main railway station of Ipoh and the town hall of the city. The tower was created as a memorial to James Birch, who was the British resident of Perak during the British Empire. As clock towers go, this is a standard four sided tower with each face displaying a clock. The tower is painted in a simple black and white scheme, and interestingly has four spires surrounding the tower rather than on the tower itself. Most of the things to see in Ipoh are around this area, so it’s worth a quick diversion.
