Great view & breathtaking especially inside the mosque of a nearly 200 years old property. Great historical mention about the land grab between owner & colonialist.

Regularly during my stay in George Town I used to pass by this mosque, right in the center of the old town. There is a big lawn around it and the building is in the typical Indo-Saracenic or Moorish style, so popular during the days of the British Empire in this part of the world. There are domes and arches and a minaret standing separately.
The mosque is the largest in town, but also the oldest, going back to the times of Sir George Leith, the Lieutenant-Governor of Penang. At the beginning of the 19th century he granted to the leader of the 'Chulia's', as the Muslim Tamils immigrants here were known, the land to build a mosque. Not far from the mosque is Lebuh Chulia, one of the most famous street of George Town. The name is derived from the once famous Chola Empire in southern India, who had expanded all the way to Indonesia.
'Kapitan' was in early British times the title for a leader of an Ethnic community. 'Keling' is a Malay name for Indians, referrring to the historical Kalinga Empire in central East India. Once it had been a neutral word, today it is considered derogatory. The Kapitan Keling mosque, the way we see it now, is mainly the result of an enlargement in the 1930's. It is open to non-Muslims, except at prayer time, and tours are offered.

There are several temples from several different religions in only a small area, so it is easy to see them all as part of your own walking tour. This was good to see.

The name of mosque was taken from the Kapitan Kelings, the person who was appointed leaders of the South Indian community by the British.
The whitewashed mosque is topped with large golden-yellow Mughal-style domes, crescents and stars and features a single, typical Indian-Islamic minaret from which the sound of the prayer can be heard.
A long walkway leads up to the main prayer hall of Kapitan Keling Mosque, with graceful arches sweeping along its outer passageway.
Inside the mosque there are lofty, celestial-white Gothic, Moorish and Roman arches creating an illusion of even more depth to the already-spacious prayer hall; check out the sparkling chandelier that hangs above.
The walls are covered with calligraphy panels and stained glass windows featuring arabesques of geometrical designs and floral motifs. The floor is solid, polished white marble with long rows of prayer rugs strewn all over.
Visitors are only allowed to enter if they are properly attired.

This is the first mosque I have visited. The building is very plain but it's interesting to see how a different religion worships.
You are shown around by a member of their community who explains a little about the mosque and their religion. Her talk seemed to be a canned speech and she was not interested in any of my contributions.

This mosque is one of the oldest in Penang and is part mosque, part Islamic and cultural centre. Architecturally, the building is mostly Malay influenced, there are minarets and domes, but so that you’d know it actually is a mosque. As a building I thought that it wasn’t all that interesting, but if you’re looking for information then this is one good place for it.

Very beautiful and majestic architecture, you can take a stroll at the gardens and take some really nice photos-located quite centrally, next to Little India.
