This market opens for visitors starting from 6 AM until 12 PM every Sunday. You can find local foods, souvenirs, pets, plants, flowers, shirts, coffee, shoes. I visited Gaya Street Sunday Market in Kota Kinabalu city center in the middle of January 2022. Overall the place is clean and not too crowded due to Covid-19 restriction. You can walk for about 700 meters along the market. To enter you must scan body temperature and most already complete 2 dose of vaccine. Will come back for sure.

Visited during Raya 2019. This was my 3rd visit after a few years. It has improved in the variety of stalls but still mostly selling the same touristy stuff. Good place for getting souvenirs as you can bargain. Tried the infamous blended watermelon juice and it was really refreshing especially in the hot weather. Great place to stroll would definitely recommend to others.

Nothing out of the ordinary, but a nice Sunday market to visit nevertheless, with locals selling their goods.
Keychains, batik prints, fruits, rattan bags were among the things sold.
It does get very hot.
Nice shop selling a variety of buns along the street(non halal) but the name escapes me.

A typical type of sunday markets with a range of foods, clothes and knick knacks. A good atmosphere with the street being blocked off

Likes the place, selling food, cloth, fruit, accessories even a pet. The road is closed for this Sunday market. Visit early to avoid a lot of people.

The stalls should be gradually closed and removed for the tent after 1:00 pm.
If you want to look for some handcraft products, you can still find in Filipino handcraft market. It is just next to the Central Market. By using the footbridge behind Horizon Hotel, you can walk through from Gaya Street to Central Market. Or, it is also a good choice for taking a relax walk from Marlin Statue to Filipino Handcraft Market. Just a reminder that the passage between the stalls in Filipino handcraft market is bit narrow, but with the cover. So, no worry for the rainy day.
I am a 59 year old woman would it be safe for me to go to the Sunday Market on my own as well as the Filipino market during the day as well as night.

The Gaya Street Market is only open in the mornings...as early at 6 am and wrap up is usually around noon or just past about 12:30 pm (as it gets too hot). It is totally safe to walk on your own.
The Handicraft Market (aka Philipino Market) - totally safe to walk around on your own during the day. During dinnertime, there are lots of people around and it's very busy - but do be more alert. I wouldn't recommend going on your own at night.
Just like home, take the usual precautions - avoid dark areas during the day or night, don't flash your bag/cash unnecessarily...same rules apply when you are on holiday or at home.

Hi junepopplewell,
If you are generally healthy and have no problem walking, you are good to go. I saw some older people walking in this area and they were fine. You can actually get yourself out of this place anytime and anypoint you want. It is a straight long market with plenty of rest area/cafe as well as exits leading to all direction in kk. People wouldnt mind you taking time to walk. I suggest you go a bit early, say 8am..so it wont be too hot for you. If u feel tired, stop and rest, sit in a cafe or somewhere, and continue. If u think you ve seen enough, go back to your hotel. It will be best if you stay in a nearby hotel. Cheers.

It is safe. it's on a Sunday morning, many people are around. Do not show that you have too much money when you need to purchase anything. Keep large cash at hotel safe and bring around rm300.00 ( US$100.00) would be sufficient. Most of the wares displayed are local items and not that really expensive
