A very pretty mosque but quite a walk from KK. We enjoyed the seaside stroll, saw the sun setting and then enjoyed a nice dinner at one of the food stalls behind the mosque.

Beautiful mosque seemingly floating in a lagoon but in fact sitting on a series of piled foundations. Construction began in 1992 and the mosque opened for worship on February 2nd, 2000, following the proclamation of Kota Kinabalu city status. The architectural design is based on the Nabawi Mosque in Medina, external walls and minarets are white, contrasted by the blue and gold coloured dome. Unfortunately, our tour did not include provision for visiting, viewing external only from the boundary fence.

Never come here. They charge entrance fee for religious places. Even though it's only 5mabi, it's very annoying. When seeing Chinese people, they treat them badly. They drive people away without explanation and swear. Faith is just an excuse. They know but do not practice what they preach. No wonder the country is like this... It's strange that it can develop. Never come again. Must pay 5rm and there s not welcome and nice to our Chinese. Not doubt for the poverty! A beautiful appearance but rotten inside. It's hard to achieve success even if you can see the big picture from the small details.

Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is the second major mosque in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, after the Sembulan State Mosque.

The mosque is located outside the city center.

You need to book to visit it. Unfortunately, we admired it briefly from the outside.

Beautiful mosque and very scenic.
You have the option of not entering and taking picture from outside or enter and pay for traditional dress covering yourself from top to bottom and enter mosque.
They also made a nice wooden platform at lake for you to take superb pictures.
Staff there is lovely and so are volunteers there.
Make sure to cross the road and walk at seaside while you are there.

We were there during Friday dzuma prayer, which gave us opportunity to enter the mosque as we are muslims. They have a seperate room for tourists shoes which is great as its not as easy to find them among thousands of others. most of the tourist places the upkeep of them is not Borneans priority. What a beautiful building but not looked after. Broken footpaths peeling paint and window coverings, Unvaccumed rugs. Please take care of that holy structure so it is there for generations to come.

Next on our agenda was the City Mosque. We could see it from afar & I was shocked that it looked like the Nabawi Mosque in the city of Medina in Saudi Arabia from the design of its arches & domes. Nabawi Mosque is the 2nd holiest site in the Muslim world. It is also the final resting place of Prophet Muhammad pbuh.

The City Mosque is probably the biggest & the 2nd most important mosque in Kota Kinabalu. It is known as “Likas Floating Mosque” because it is surrounded by a man-made lagoon & from a distance, the mosque appeared to be floating. Somehow, the picturesque image reminded me of King Arthur’s time, with castles & surrounding moats. It was said that the mosque was built by the order of the then Sabah’s Chief Minister in 1983.

We could see many tourists & photographers inside & outside the City Mosque. Some had even used the mosque as a prop for their wedding photo. We joined the bandwagon & stopped before entering the mosque’s compound only to be told by the security guards that it was dangerous to park our car at the roadside. We were directed to drive in & park inside.

As some of us were in t-shirts & did not cover our heads with scarves, the security guards told us to change our attire by renting some coveralls before entering the mosque. We were also told not to make too much of noise since it was near prayer time. Since it was drizzling, we parked nearest to the mosque’s entrance. We spent a good 20 minutes, taking photos which gave an illusion that the mosque was indeed floating before leaving the place of worship. We did not go inside as we were tired & wanted to return to our hotel.

The site was originally a beach & seawater shoreline of Kampung Likas. In 1989, the area was covered & embankment works were completed in August. Piling works started in 1992 but financial issues had put a damper on its construction til 1994. Finally, the mosque was officially opened by the 8th Chief Minister of Sabah after 17 years following the declaration of Kota Kinabalu as a city in 2000.

The City Mosque can accommodate between 9,000 to 12,000 worshippers at any 1 time. The huge blue & gold dome with a geometrical pattern depicts the location of its main prayer hall. There is also a covered inner courtyard which is used as an overspill prayer area. Interestingly enough, the mosque is home to 3 madrasahs or Islamic schools. One school has 700 students. Another is a school for the blind & the last is for special learning needs students. There is also a library, palliative care clinic, staff quarters, amenity rooms & ATM machines. A fish farm was introduced as a result of a joint initiative between the mosque & University Malaysia Sabah. Paddle boat rides were also featured in to draw local & international tourists to the site.

I would probably come back just to have a look inside the beautiful mosque. This tourist destination should not be missed. However, please remember to dress modestly with long sleeves & pants. Ladies should also cover their heads before entering the mosque.

Austalian married to Pakistani born Muslim.
I have been to Mosques in UAE, Oman, Turkey, Pakistan and several Asian countries and have never felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome as I have at this mosque. So much that I felt the need to leave this review.
Dressed respectfully in head cap with Hijab and still everyone who works there asks if you are Muslim?. The man working inside mosque was respectful but as we made our way back to the main road we wanted to use the photo platform and another man who worked there approached and said that he could see the top of my neck (above the collar of my shirt and scarf, basically my chin) and I'd have to use one of their hire robes to use the platform. We were disgusted by this behaviour and went outside the wall. This photo platform is just on the inside of the outer wall of the mosque where not even 50m there is a photo spot outside the wall where people not dressed appropriately are free to take photos. I believe they charge non Muslims to enter the grounds and then charge again for robe hire. Other mosques I have been do not charge and will loan gown/hijab to those who are not dressed appropriately as Islam is based on being a welcoming religion.
