The Museum of the Moving Image has an excellent overview of movie & television history and technology, with several interesting exhibitions currently ongoing. Adults will like the current exhibition of "deepfakes" and how these can be constructed. Kids will love the detailed retrospective on the life and art of Jim Henson and his Muppets, going back before they were famous. As befits a movie museum, there are also lots of short and feature length films to take in.

This museum in Astoria is easy to get to by subway, and there are plenty of places to eat in this arts-focused neighborhood. One of NYC's unexpected finds.

Very interesting day out. The Jim Henson exhibition was excellent. Tells his full story and you can see his wonderful creations up close. There are some cool interactive things such as making your own stop motion picture and adding in sound tracks and sound effects to movie clips which was fun. There was also some great movie memorabilia from movies such as The Mask and Mrs Doubtfire. Definitely worth going and a good price. I’m definitely going again.

Small museum (three floors) but quite awesome. I can't believe I have never been here before. It's clean and the displays are great if you are a TV/Movie fan (and who isn't?). The Linda Blair dummy prop is my favorite. Really cool and interesting place. Go when it's not crowded so you can really take your time and see everything!

We really enjoyed this museum for the thorough history of the film industry, instructive information, and the interest I’ve exhibits. That in itself would take a couple of hours and with the addition of the Jim Henson exhibits made for a 4+ hour visit. The Henson exhibit was very impressive with many characters (muppets) and would provide new information for all but the most devoted muppet fan. There are also quite a few film-related artifacts and collectibles which round out the museum. All most of a day but given the subject matter, nearly all of it is interesting to most people.

Amazing place to learn about the history and development of the movie industry. Lots of great vintage machinery here.

This is a big, colorful place focused on what seems to be mainly classic cinema and animation. There is a HUGE permanent Jim Henson exhibit (I saw something similar in Atlanta at their puppetry arts center—wonder is this is the same collection). They had David Bowie’s suit from Labyrinth, which was neat!

There is a lot on Star Trek, Star Wars. Several artifacts from older movies, the Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor era. Several displays on makeup and facial prosthetics. A Space Odyssey exhibit and Simpsons exhibit. Several other random bits and pieces of memorabilia.

Interesting and mostly old school. Exhibits rotate. There are also movie theaters and screenings! You also learn about the start of big movies in Astoria (the original home of Paramount). Don’t expect Harry Potter or super new stuff, but I think that’s the charm of this place.

Three floors of material, something for everyone, clean, open, and very reasonably priced. I recommend doing this along with the Sculpture Center (also reviewed) and grabbing some fantastic Queens cuisine.

I am a HUGE movie fan, always have been, always will be. In this museum, which is dedicated to the craft of them, there is so, so much to be offered. Coming from the middle of Manhattan from a trip, me and my father decided to stop by the Museum of the Moving Image, after watching a video by Adam Savage.

Boy, was this museum everything, and more, the permanent Muppets display was incredible, especially as I have grown up with Sesame Street and The Muppets. The touring exhibit, at the time of us going was for Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Which was pretty cool as well, it included many props from the film, as well as a genuine Oscar. Even as a guy who had never watched the movie, it was spectacular.

I'm a little bit all over the place with this review, but I cannot recommend this gem of a museum any more, it was truly amazing!

This museum is my spirit animal. I absolutely loved the Stanley Kubrick 2001 exhibit. It went into details that I was unaware of, even as a fan who has attended other Kubrick shows. Then there was the Jim Henson exhibit - a perfect monument to some amazing work. The permanent exhibits were just as good, seeing models from some of my favourite films, old posters and some great fun practical things for kids including animating, recording their own dialogue for movies, doing special fx etc - it may have been for kids but it was a quiet day so I did it all! I wish I had more time to catch a film there, they have a 70mm projector and a fab film line-up.

This is a gem of a museum! It opened in 1988 in one of the buildings that was part of the Astoria Studio complex and this complex has its own history as the 1920 beginnings of what became Paramount. The museum is now a very modern, engaging place where you'll find artifacts, screenings, public discussions, interactive experiences, and permanent and temporary exhibits all relating to film, TV, and digital media.

This visit we came specifically for a temporary exhibit on the making of the film "2001: A Space Odyssey" (hubby loves this film). There were lots of reproductions (I wondered why so many reproductions?) of props, handwritten and typewriter letters and notes to and from Stanley Kubrick and others, models of large set pieces, clips from the film, and even the actual Academy Award statue Stanley Kubrick won in 1969 for Best Visual Effects.

If you are a Muppets fan (who isn't?), there is an ongoing exhibition all about Jim Henson's work. There are historic puppets, cool old TV footage, drawings, and even some interactive projects where you can try your hand (literally) at being a puppeteer. It's really a fun exhibit and a unique opportunity to get to know some of these iconic characters in a different way and learn about the process that brought/brings them to life.

There are other things to explore here as well, but it's not a huge museum so you don't feel overwhelmed. Plus, there is a light and airy modern cafe where you can take a little break, too. The small gift shop has some neat things to buy and worth a little walk-through before you exit the front door.

While you will find a huge array of museums in NYC, know that this is the only museum in the U.S. of its kind. While it's not in Manhattan, it's not that far away, and very much worth a couple of hours to experience.

Spent most of a day here on a weekend otherwise filled with Broadway shows, fancy dinners and jazz clubs. This was a nice switch. We love movies and this delivered on showing a lot about how movies delivered. But the coolest display was one that showed how the production team for a baseball team deftly moves between 14 different cameras to seemlessly show the game to viewers who hardly notice the amazing amount of work that goes into deciding which shot to show when and moving between them smoothly and almost imperceptibly. It's like a ballet that you don't even realize you're watching. Stunning!

Thanks for your comment. It's terrific that you mention the live sports editing exhibit. We agree, the work a live TV editor does—in this case the legendary Mets TV director Bill Webb—is truly astonishing, the way he "builds" the story of a game in real time.
