Good to visit in day time. The village has a canal inside and some small shops. Coffee and tea shops are also available.

Where do the years go? I was sure we’d been to this village late last year, but it turned out it was in February 2018. TA is my travel diary! Anyway, the rainy season has all but departed and we’re now into summer but SWMBO packed a couple of umbrellas just in case into her rucksack along with biscuits, grapes and tea, and a spare t-shirt for me. There are other things in it, but to me it’s the Forbidden City, so I don’t ask.

We strolled up the road and got the No. 841 bus to GuangZhou East Bus Station and then it was the No. 45 bus to its terminus in XiaoZhou Village. Get a seat on this bus as the journey is about an hour. It meanders southwards through the city past the Tianhe Sports Centre (TA Reviewed) and over LieDe bridge (TA reviewed) and then bears right and then a u-turn and heads generally east past HaiZhu Wetlands Park (TA reviewed as Haizu), then after a couple of hundred metres turns right.

Note: buy a travel card and top it up. Bus fares are generally 2 Yuan, and no change is given on the bus. There’s a phone app but I’ve no idea about it and even the locals occasionally have trouble with it, not great when everybody is pushing and shoving to get on to the bus.

The city suddenly stops and you’re into ‘old’ China. There are hundreds of small businesses opening out on the bus route, most are making clothes or are associated with clothes making. On and on the bus trundled, with plenty of horn honking. I’ve no idea how the bus driver manged to stay sane with bicycles wobbling all around and old men slowly pushing barrows in the middle of the road. This is a time to glimpse the China that tourists rarely see, this is the real working China. SWMBO was busy comparing the prices of fruit and vegetables to what she pays only a few kilometres away in the city.

After an hour we arrived at the XiaoZhou Bus terminal, well it’s where the bus turns around, so off we got. There’s a nice new sign pointing to the Tourist Area.
Under the large arch and facing us was the familiar pale-yellow Li Tang (meeting hall) with doors firmly shut. In fact, most of temple doors during out visit were firmly shut. Covid-19 hasn’t done the businesses in the village any favours, and many places are closed but don’t let that dissuade you from visiting as there’s still lots to see and I’m sure businesses will reopen as tourists reappear. There are still a few ‘twee’ cafes for coffee and a snack.

One temple was open and that was the Jian YueMei Ancestral Temple. Not much to see then again there’s no charge to enter but there are toilets. SWMBO impressed the young man on the door by reading the old Chinese characters on the memorial plaques and then translating them for this old English character.

Note: outside each temple there are information boards in English, in fact there are English signs all over the village.

Basically, we just strolled around the village. There are numerous narrow alleys to stroll along. Follow the streams that flow through the village and cross the bridges. SWMBO didn’t fancy the houses that fronted onto the slow-moving streams. To me, it reminded me of a miniature Venice.

SWMBO was disappointed that so many of the little ‘tourist tat’ shops had pulled down the shutters. At least I was spared the moan of ‘Why did I buy that!’ when we got home.

Be aware, that cash is no longer king, and most places only accept payment via a mobile phone app, Alipay or WeiXing (WeChat) are the most popular. If you pay by cash, don’t expect change or expect it given via your phone app.

We found the famous Oyster Shell house but I’m sure they’ve been removed from the wall in the alley, but they’re still on the side wall. Probably far to difficult to remove in such a confined space.

By the river at Jian’s Clan Hall we sat and rested our weary selves and partook of crackers, grapes and tea. Suitably refreshed we wandered back to the bus station. Amazing how afternoon three hours has just drifted by. SWMBO bought local bananas from an old dear in the market.

The journey back to GuangZhou East Bus Station on the No. 45 bus was a ninety-minute nightmare because the next day was Dragon Boat Festival and everybody who had a car was driving back home for the three-day festival.

I reckon a guided tour of the village would be beneficial as there’s masses to see and I’m sure there lots of history and tales to tell.

Even though I expected more from this ancient village it is always nice to see a different side of bustling and glowing city center. Small houses set on the “river” with its people enjoying the peaceful way of life can be very good for you blood pressure if you know what I mean. I loved oyster shell house and also little shops. There is one bar where some girls had their karaoke moment at 11am and having all that in mind it was very interesting to experience something like that.

I have seen over 25 ancient villages in China. From a sightseers perspective, I rank this in the bottom 50%. Thus, the highest rating I could give is "Average." The most significant things to see in the village are the two oyster shell houses (which are said to be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer), the narrow streets and waterway (looks very polluted). some of the buildings, works of some village artists, and some sculptures.

this is not a replica, but an actual ancient village, not overly comercialized. There is an oyster shell house here. Nice ancient bridges, narrow walkways, statues, an much more.

We had some friends in town and decided to go around the city. We ended up going to the Xiaozhou Village as it was quite ancient.
