We had a nice sunny day relaxing walk through the park. There are many paths and lots to see. A little quieter than on the streets on the outer rim, and the air is fresher.

The Tianhe Park was such a pleasant experience. The location is quite central and on a good day its a great place to be outdoor. The lake is nice and you can do a bit of boating or simply walk around the beautiful lake and admire the topiary.

It was after one o’clock when SWMBO suggested we visit this park. I thought is was rather late in the day to venture out but she assured me that it was a one bus journey. So, half-an-hour later we were strolling, in the stifling heat, to the bus stop while yours truly hummed the refrain from ‘Only Mad Dogs and Englishmen Go Out in the Mid-day Sun.’

We boarded the #284 bus and settled down for what SWMBO assured me was a longish journey, in fact, it was over 20 stops. We skirted to the south of TianHe and kept heading south-east. The bus driver advised SWMBO to get off at the YuanCun ShanDing stop and cross the six-lane road using the pedestrian bridge and walk to the park. The bus was actually going past the park but you can’t cross the road (HuangPu Middle Avenue) as there’s a barrier in the middle of the road. We took his advice.

The pedestrian bridge is only a few metres from the bus stop and we walked past a parade of shops selling mainly very smart bathroom fittings, and expensive wooden furniture. Then past a large government building of unknown purpose where the guard assured SWMBO the park was only another couple of hundred metres, just past the excavations for the new TianHe Park metro station. He was right and were soon at the South Gate of the park.

Note – there are also North and West gates. There are plenty of buses going past each gate. The park’s metro station is scheduled to open at the end of 2018 as a stop on the new line 21.

We walked into Loving Care Square and then up and down the steps towards the lake. Amazingly there were a few hire boats on the lake, from 70 Yuan per half-hour for an electric boat but only 50 Yuan if you’re energetic enough to pedal your way around the lake. There are actually two boat hire places.

We stopped to admire the statue of Beethoven (I think its him) conducting but the orchestra has gone AWOL, probably popped off to TianHe for retail therapy. I couldn’t resist a selfie with him which seems a popular activity.

We walked clockwise around the lake and headed for the memorial to Deng ShiChang which gave some purpose to our meanderings. We passed a small children’s fun-fair which was doing good business with doting grandparents keeping their charges amused. Opposite the fun-fair is a small café offering Chinese snacks and cold drinks. There was a guy singing Chinese karaoke to a couple of admirers.

There’s a small bust of a chap just before the ‘bridge’ across the lake. From the very faded plaque I gathered he was a leading light in introducing Chinese Brail, something I never knew existed and SWMBO had never heard of! Pity that only the Brail was ‘readable’ and I couldn’t make out his name.

Of course, we stopped at the Koi Carp Lake and I threw in some fish food balls I now carry in my man-bag. There are always fish to feed, no matter where you go.
We eventually climbed the steps to Deng’s memorial. Visit Deng ShiCheng Museum to find out more about the man, but be aware it’s closed until 5th September (see my TA review). SWMBO didn’t venture too near as there are some family graves and she’s a little bit superstitious about graves. Deng, by the way, went down with his ship. There’s a lovely statue of the man himself.

After my pilgrimage we carried on walking around the lake and eventually found ourselves back at Loving Care Square and the South Gate.

The park is mostly wheel-chair friendly. There are clean toilets. The park is in a busy city, it’s popular with locals, and there’s a metro station being built in one corner so it isn’t exactly an oasis of calm and tranquility but you can get a breath of fresh-air.

We turned left out of the gate as there’s three bus stops. At the furthest one we boarded a #547 bus which wended its way through GuangZhou’s rush hour and back streets before dumping us a couple of hundred metres from our apartment.
